- In this episode of "Open Door", "Ray Donovan" actor Liev Schreiber gives a tour of his renovated NYC apartment. The interior design firm Ashe + Leandro turned Schreiber's old bachelor pad into a home for him and his two sons.

"Client-designer communication can be a delicate thing. It doesn’t typically involve quoting “Sprockets.” But in 2016, when Liev Schreiber decided to retool his triplex apartment in Manhattan’s NoHo district, the Saturday Night Live reference just seemed right. The initial brainstorms yielded proposals that struck the actor as “uncomfortably Teutonic,” he says, recounting his lively give-and-take with Ariel Ashe and Reinaldo Leandro, the 30-something principals who head up the AD100 New York design firm Ashe + Leandro. “Like, ‘I know you want to touch my monkey.’
Schreiber, of course, nails this line-the accent, the inflection-with diamond-laser accuracy. He couldn’t have found a better audience for it. Ashe’s first design job was on set at SNL, and her brother-in-law is Seth Meyers. Suffice it to say, she has a sense of humor. More to the point, Ashe and Leandro’s work has an easygoing cool to it; it’s rigorous, but it’s also relaxed, not unlike the duo themselves. So, you don’t want “Sprockets”? OK, no “Sprockets.” Put into practice at Schreiber’s apartment, the Ashe + Leandro approach-modernist yet utterly livable-has yielded something that all three agree is rare in the age of too-tall, too-skinny condo towers and Edison-bulbed brownstone renos.
The space itself has some backstory: Starting in the late ’90s, Schreiber cobbled together the three-level, three-bedroom apartment from a couple of units in this circa-1880, redbrick, Neo-Grec industrial building. The Yale Drama grad’s career had taken off following a breakthrough role in Nora Ephron’s Mixed Nuts. Soon enough came Scream (and Scream 2), and an eye-opening turn as Hamlet in 1999 at the Public Theater, just a few blocks away. The bachelor pad, tricked out with help from his older brother, a stonemason, served Schreiber well.
After he partnered up with Naomi Watts, in 2005, the place became the stage for a whole new production: family life. (Their sons, Sasha and Kai, are now ten and nine.) Still, the couple got the itch for a new home. And in 2012, they found digs farther downtown, hiring Ashe and Leandro to do the job (AD, March 2016). When Schreiber and Watts separated, in late 2016, he was determined to create something new from his beloved old NoHo apartment. He felt a real rapport with the designers, so he enlisted them to update the space for his life now.
The actor may play tough on TV, but we’re talking about a fellow who’s been known to dip into Seneca and Montaigne, who spends quality time with the novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, whose IMDb listing oozes quality, and who is a familiar presence around the neighborhood, walking Woody, his very cute Hurricane Harvey rescue dog, or cycling with his boys. With his mix of well-honed urbanity and street savvy, Schreiber is every bit a New Yorker’s New Yorker.
So is the apartment, with its distressed-oak floors, steel staircases, wide-open flow, and old-school galley kitchen with new-school black stone counters and sleek Miele appliances, where Schreiber might offer a visiting friend fresh-baked banana bread and a cup of PG Tips tea. It’s also where he gathers his sons for meals, for their presence is unmistakable here, from the bedrooms outfitted with Prouvé and Eames chairs and Harry Potter wands to the board games and the student nylon-string guitar propped up in the living room.
Schreiber’s own quarters are a low-key affair, with one indulgence: a walk-in closet, which prompts him to exclaim, “This I thought I would never have!” Up on the top floor, there’s a glassed-in mini gym flooded with light. “This is the room Ray Donovan built,” he jokes. It doubles as a meditation room. (Schreiber spent part of his childhood at an ashram school.)
For an apartment overrun by two growing boys, there’s a lot of calm and order. Schreiber likes it that way."

It doesn’t seem like it staged and designed by someone else. Although he worked with an architect and probably a designer to help with finding pieces and arranging them within the apartment, it doesn’t feel like he ever lost control over their work and was intimately involved. That’s why the space and choices are compliment each other, are seamless, and radiate warmth. It’s very cool that he retained this apartment in NYC and didn’t decamp entirely to LA, and I think he stayed active in theater. As the OP said, he seems to realize how fortunate he is, and that’s really nice to see. How much does this guy love his kids...A LOT.

Whether they're insecure or genuinely confident in themselves; whether they have a strong (healthy) sense of themselves or not; etc. So, your observations are spot on. His choices, about his home and in the nature of his relationship to it, reflect a person of depth, intelligence, sophistication, authenticity, character, culture, conviction, sentiment, and genuine self-assuredness. He has a solid sense of who he is. His children are fortunate to have such a father -- regardless of material wealth or poverty.
I really respect his choices. I like that some pieces were so personal. His style is fantastic. 20 years of evolution looks special.

Genuine intelligence, literature, the arts, artistry, creativity, civility, depth and breadth of reading, self-respect, respect for others, independent spirit, natural wit, a sense of play, sans pretentiousness... the formations of authentic sophistication, elegance and class -- none of which can be bought. This man exudes all of these in spades.
No surprise, then, that there isn't one gaudy sliver in the home's decor. In this, the man is solid. (Relatively rare, one would think, for a Hollywood actor.)
Just one thing, though: no plants? No accents of color (apart from the pilfered Tabac sign and the blush of flowers on the lazy susan, to give a bit of pop to the elegant black, understated ebony browns, whites, beige tones, and chrome silver? Even in a man-pad as genuinely lived-in and cool as this one, the eye seeks out color, and the spirit something alive (apart from the residents, of course). The children's bedrooms fare slightly better in their accents of color, while still being aesthetically consistent with the rest of the home. But, then, maybe the man leaves it to the ladies, who pass through it, and their own sartorial flair to splash on the color? ;)

AAAAAAAH, so refreshing to see a house where you can see objects actually owned and loved by the people in it and in which you can actually imagine someone living, instead of those super modern, cold and impersonal "houses"!!! LOVE IT and love the touch of black everywhere!

I love that it’s not a huge mansion or something, but something he bought 20 years ago and lives in. Sometimes you can tell there’s stuff in the houses that aren’t used but are just for show. I love how functional and personal it is.

Gosh! How can someone not respect and admire this guy! He bought the 1-bedroom apartment 20 years ago, and has just added to it and renovated it throughout his career. It's so refreshing to see an actual family man who lives in a HOME that is meant for living in. I will be surprised if I see an episode that is warmer than this one.

This is one of the best houses they've shown, it's interesting and welll done without being overly staged. I really like the graphic artwork and use of black and white.

I love the fact that the apartment has functionality, personality, practicality, style and actually felt like a real home where rooms have a purpose. Not like most mediocre Hollywood actors who buy multimillion-dollar houses on the hills, x amounts of rooms which are not in use (just to say I have additional rooms) and pay for an interior decorator stylist for a soulless living environment.

This might be my favourite AD visit for the genuine, down to earth devotion a celeb has to their place. He’s so naturally charming and unassuming too. Loved the space and loved the video!
'you're the best dad.' That is such a cliche. I wouldn't like my kids to be like that. He isn't the best dad, he just the only dad they will ever have. No comparison possible. He has all these bookshelves. Just store the books in the basement, no reason to waste space for printed paper. It's the content of books that matter, not how they look on a bookshelf. I like him as an actor but as a person he seems to be a walking cliche. You somehow managed to ignore all the negative qualities that he has.

That is a beautiful and serene, perfectly done home. Its classy, comfortable, subdued, expansive and looks like an intellectual lives there. Ray Donovan was one of my favorite series of all time. Liev seems like a very genuine, warm guy. He deserves the best for him and his boys.

Liev Schreiber is such an amazing actor. He is just so amazing, and a wonderful father.
I watch a lot of real estate videos. There is a big difference between showcase homes created by interior designers and lived in homes. Lived in homes have personal touches and include items that interior designers would toss in the bin. I can't help but fall back on watching showcase homes away from other people's personal clutter. Liev's home is both, showcase with personal touches. Nuff respect :)
He will always come by my job religiously. Never bothered to ask for a picture or anything. He always came with his dog, got a coffee and some granola. Always looked serious, but he was always kind to our staff.
