I've long been a fan of everything that Christos at Crazy Tube Circuits cooks up - especially his knack of taking classic boost and amp-style OD circuits, and pairing classic combinations together in a single enclosure. The Crossfire summoned some SRV with an 808 & Blackface-style OD; and the Unobtanium brought the big bucks by combining Klon & Dumble-style tones.
The Hi Power is a distinctly British take on this concept - and one that a certain D. Gilmour would approve of, as this pedal marries a Colorsound Power Boost/Overdriver into a Hiwatt-voiced clipping circuit. Both can be used independently, or stacked into each other for some raunchy, middley mayhem.
The Power Boost has a voltage switch, so can operate internally at either 18v or 9v, and has a Master (unlike the earliest originals) so you can control the level hitting the front end of your amp. The Hiwatt OD has 103 and 504 modes - simulating the differing voicing, headroom & compression characteristics of those 100W and 50W amplifiers. There's also the N/B/L switch - giving you Bright and Normal modes, plus the option to jumper the channels for extra gain & a more full frequency response.
Add the internal FX loop into the mix, and the fact that all this is achieved from a single 9V input, and this pedal packs a huge amount of functionality for the price point.
What do you think? Epic British tones? Or not for you? Comment below!
Amp is a Vajra JTM45 clone running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion AlNiCo Gold & G12M Heritage Greenback speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. Spring reverb is a Dr Z Z-Verb unit.

Whoa Joe!!! Damn good demo. There are a dozen other videos out there today but you're the one to nail it. You captured the late 60's/70's vibe so we can really tell the pedal catches the times. THANX
killer , if I were ctc i would bring out the overdriver as a standalone pedal such an underrated circuit killer tones , better than moder overdrives imo
This is a COOL peal. Great demo!
Sounds great.
Sounds pretty sweet 🎸
Sounds good. But I already have enough overdrives for myself and the rest of the county 😊
I think I preferred the sound of the JTM by itself, then you could wind that up for more crunch and/or add a simpler overdrive of choice to send it over the top, so to speak.
10:28 before we heard the Hiwatt side... Maybe start with the amp side, then the boost? Hiwatt pedals typically don't capture the tonality and texture of the amp. This one is OK. The drive side sounds pretty good.
Did you just wink at me..? (at 5.13)... yeah, won't be back...
Ok, seya 👋
whats your thoughts about pedal companies dropping a new pedal on every influencer at once, in a big marketing campaign? Does anyone else feel CZcams guitar videos are becoming like one big add? no reflection on Joe's channel, I like it a lot. I ask this question with respect? Is it just me?
Yes. Most reviews are "ads". However, the reality us that the gear coming today is bloody great. You can get a Squire Tele quite cheap that is really a great guitar. You can get a Tone City pedal for $40 that compares well to most costly pedals. Point us that a reviewer is hard pressed to be negative.enjoy the videos and be thankful that Joe puts I. The effort to educate and entertain us gear heads.
You are not on your own. It's like an avalanche
That'll flap yer trousers.
It has that hiwatt vox high sound but also sounds wicked thin or something ..does not remind me of David Gilmour
They say it sounds like DG’s live sound. 🤷🏻♂️
What kind of strat is that
