    The MRCS exam is a pre-requisite to enter surgical training in the UK. In this video, I share my study strategy and resources I used personally to pass the MRCS Part A in my F1 year on my first attempt. Disclaimer as always: everyone studies differently and this is what has worked for me personally. I'm only sharing what I have experienced in hopes that it is also useful for others!

    2 questions:
    1) Did you make notes on the emrcs questions/teach me anatomy or just read the explanations and learn through repetition?
    2) Was emrcs sufficient for paper 2 or did you use additional resources?

      Hi, thanks for watching!
      1. Initially I started to do this but it became an inefficient use of my time as there was a lot of information and you could read on infinitely… so no, I ended up only making some notes / cards on stuff that I failed to remember after a couple tries, but I did not have a comprehensive notes bank.
      2. Yes I found emrcs to be enough. As I said the pastest mocks were useful just to get used to 3 hours of focused exam questions.

    Hi
    I have designed my whole preparation course after watching your video and thanks for everything, they are great.
    I just have one question, I heard that sept22 attempt was pretty difficult with more histopath and new topics. Were people going through emrcs able to pass it? And the failure rate were of more people who didn't follow the right pattern
    Kindly guide regarding this.

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před rokem

      The September 2022 attempts had a high number of new questions due to a leak of the RCS question bank. However the syllabus has remained the same so I would argue that the topics are still the same content you need to know. There is anecdotal evidence of some people finding these new questions harder but I think no obvious concrete proof; the pass rates will always fluctuate based on difficulty of questions so it's not a great indicator.
      I would still stick with eMRCS. You can consider supplementing with Pastest questionbank also, but eMRCS remains the main resource.

    Hi !
    I have one question. After passing MRCS both parts will you be going straight to ST3 training or you will be continuing the same pathway as other surgical trainees who take MRCS after CT 2 level ?
    And also does MRCS exam score expires after a certain period of time ? Or if you pass MRCS once it is valid for lifetime ?

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před 2 lety +3

      The MRCS is required in order for you to progress to ST3, i.e. you must complete it anytime before you start an ST3 training post. Passing the MRCS exam early does not mean you can skip the surgical training years, so you still have to do F1/2, CT1/2 etc.
      Once you obtain the full MRCS membership (part A and B) you can keep it for life as long as you continue to pay annual fees to the royal college.

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před 10 měsíci +1

      No they’re different banks so unfortunately you’ll need to get both if you want access to that. If you wait til closer to the exam pastest’s price goes down based on time to the exam (eg 1 month rather than 4 months); whereas emrcs is a fixed price any time of the year

      @@KittyWongHF What I meant was how different are the questions on eMRCS vs the Pastest past papers

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před 10 měsíci

      @@ramirami7840 I think generally eMRCS questions are more similar to the exam questions. The pastest questions aren’t as good but the past papers are okay for getting the different prose you might have in the exam.

      @@KittyWongHF Ah I got it
      Thanks sooo much for taking the time out to reply to me! Honestly it means a lot!
      So what I basically meant to ask was, eMRCS is a compilation of previous exam questions taken by students as well as surgeons setting the exam questions, right? So eMRCS in itself should have the questions covered in the PastTest Past papers, won't it?

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před 10 měsíci

      @@ramirami7840 No problem. eMRCS is made by surgical consultants and trainees and yes, is ‘based on’ previous exam questions and very representative (sometimes almost identical) to questions I encountered in the actual exam. I would not say however that it covers ‘all’ past exam questions as they do not have access to that and definitely there were questions in the exam that I have not seen before on eMRCS. I haven’t checked question-by-question but my impression of the pastest ‘past papers’ questions were a bit different to eMRCS, generally a bit more detailed and a bit more prose, I have not encountered many questions that strikes me as being ‘the same’ as the eMRCS ones. TBH at this point it is more about just getting volume in your questions and exposure to different Q&As which will all help.

    Does MRCS student get stipend? Or Do we have to pay training fee?

    • @KittyWongHF
      @KittyWongHF  Před rokem

      I’n not sure what you mean. The MRCS is an exam taken when you’re ready at any point along the UK postgraduate training pathway. You’re not a “student” enrolled onto it; it’s just an exam that needs to be passed at some point in order for you to qualify to continue your higher surgical training.
      Generally from core training onwards there will be financial support from the deanery or hospital to sit the exam once. Prior to this in F1/F2 it is unlikely to be funded; similarly if you’re not in training (e.g. F3/4/5) then it needs to be self funded.

    • @KittyWongHF

      It is an intercollegiate exam so the content is the same and the qualification is the same. The only difference is that you will become a member of that particular surgical college (Edinburgh / England / Ireland etc.) so usually people pick the one representing the area they work in.
