Choosing petrol or diesel power is one of the first decisions you’ll have to make before buying a new car. What’s going to be best for your type of motoring, for the environment and your wallet?
To simply put it we can settle the petrol vs diesel debate by breaking down the factors affecting your decision while choosing a car.
1. Price Difference - A diesel variant tends to be significantly more (varies with each car manufacturer) expensive than its corresponding petrol avatar. This higher initial cost has a major significance in the overall economics of choosing a model, as illustrated later in the article.
2. Cost of Maintenance - The relatively higher maintenance cost of diesel models of yesteryear is no longer true now. This was primarily because of the lower quality of the diesel available in India, which used to clog the diesel filters and cause harm to the engine in the long run. The maintenance cost of diesel, when compared to petrol, is still on the higher side but is quite comparable nowadays.
3. Fuel-Efficient Diesel Motors- Owing to diesel engine technology, they tend to return more kilometres per litre than a similarly sized petrol motor. This factor tends to be the sole reason majority of us tend to go for a diesel variant. But, we urge everyone to consider all the mentioned factors before making a decision.
4. The Difference in Fuel Prices- The lower diesel price is a reality, with the price difference between a litre of petrol and diesel generally hovering 10 rupees.
Diesel engines are generally heavier than their petrol counterparts making them slower. The compression ratio of diesel engines is much higher than petrol engines since the flash point (temperature at which it catches fire) of diesel is higher than petrol. The compression ratio, the ratio between the largest and smallest capacity of the combustion chamber, required for diesel engines is about 22:1 whereas 8:1-9:1 for petrol engines. Thus a heavier/denser metal is required for the engine assembly.
This has two very noticeable consequences on the performance of the car, specifically on the torque and the brake horsepower (BHP). As a consequence of a higher compression ratio (longer stroke), diesel engines produce more torque which means you get more acceleration off the line. This is also the main reason for diesel cars having a much smaller power band, so you generally get more torque but spread over a smaller area. This problem is amplified by turbocharging, which is employed on all diesel engines these days to improve efficiency. The upshot of this is that you often have to wait for the turbocharger to ‘wake up’ before the car’s performance is unleashed for a short time. After the surge, it’s time to change gear again as the torque tapers off.
In petrol engines, on the other hand, the power builds in relation to the revs. Therefore more usable power is available for a longer amount of time. It’s extremely satisfying chasing the needle to the red line on a petrol car, but even if you’re not going for it, it’s impossible to ignore the surplus usable power you have over a similar diesel. So if you do say words like “POWER” every time you put your foot down on the throttle, you’d find it more gratifying driving a petrol car.

Planning for a new car
Am much confused to which vehicle has to be purchased diesel or petrol. Usage is low for time being. No daily use. Is it advisable to purchase a diesel car if usage is less. Am concerned of mileage. I will be using the car for more than 10 years.
If I buy diesel car and use less will there be any issues in future. Please advise.

Even if the price of petrol and diesel becomes equal, the average of a diesel car is at least 50% higher than petrol car. This is even more if the car is an SUV. Diesel is more thick, it produces more power compared to the same amount of petrol.
I have used a diesel car for 10 years and even though I have to sell it earlier, I'll buy a diesel car only.
I have driven it for 1.2 lakh kilometres and saved 3.5 lakh in fuel cost. Plus while selling my old car will sell at a higher price than petrol car, the maintenance cost is same or even lower in a diesel car because diesel doesn't corrode the engine and parts like E10 petrol. It will corrode even more with the upcoming E20 petrol.
Only downside is that because of this recent 10 years rule, I'll have to sell it earlier but after saving 3.5 lakh i can afford a new car.
