  • It's well known that Brady Miller is a bit of an ounce counter and does some pretty interesting things to get the lightest backcountry food for hunt. In this video, Brady goes over what he brings for a days worth of food on a backcountry hunt.

    This sounds weird but is surprisingly good, I put peanut butter on a tortilla (or bagel) plus sliced salami, used to use mayo or cream cheese with salami but turns out I like peanut butter better.

    17oz of olive oil is 4,250 calories fits and in normal water bottle (1 oz). Add some in your coffee, mtn house, other meals or just take a swig. You can also substitute other oils like coconut.

    @brady_j_miller Funny, I'm definitely not too serious about weight and this actually sounds tasty and similar to what I already do. But definitely going to copy to step up my weight savings. Two questions though:
    1. Are you just drinking the broth before bed or adding it to something?
    2. Do you have any problems with the freeze dried meals not having the mylar bag or an insulated pouch?
    Thanks for the great tips.

    Even though I try really hard, I can't usually force myself through my entire day's worth of food. I do the gallon zip lock per day and shoot for 2200 calories in my "day food" zip lock and a freeze dried at night. What are you doing with your leftovers if you have any? Seems like vacuum sealing is a great idea but I'd still be bringing two empty gallon zip locks, one for trash and one for leftovers...?

    • @brady_j_miller
      @brady_j_miller Před rokem +1

      Yeah... choking down food is hard on a hunt. I'll fully agree with that statement. What has helped me is telling myself that I need to eat everything for that day and stay on top of it as I'll never know what that next day will bring, and I don't want to chance not having enough calories in my body for recovery and maintaining an active hunt.

    • @brady_j_miller
      @brady_j_miller Před rokem +2

      Hey Blake and CJ. No issues at all. I've done this same setup in the summer and warm temps in September. It's not like the cheese is sitting on hot dash of a truck. Each night your food is cooled down, and food for the most part is hung in a tree, or in my backpack during the day before I consume it. So it's not as bad as one might think.

      Most cheese is shelf stable, and if it’s vacuum sealed, it isn’t getting contaminated.

    @NigelNaughton Před rokem

    Curious why you go that light?

    • @D_Boone
      @D_Boone Před rokem +1

      Because on an 8 day backcountry hunt, every pound counts. Every pound of wrappers you take is a pound of other gear you have to leave behind.

    • @twinengineer
      @twinengineer Před 2 měsíci

      10 days times 2lbs (most individuals average food weight) is 20lbs of food. If you knock that down by 1/2lb per day, you are now at 15lbs. It adds up quick. If you've carried 7-10 days of food, you know that dropping 1/2 a lb per day allows you to add weight else where while still keeping your overall weight relatively low. You could bring a colder rated sleeping bag, or a larger spotter and still meet your goal of X lbs of total starting weight.

  • @mxracer317
    @mxracer317 Před rokem +2

    Im all about not carrying more than you need, but this is going too far by removing wrappers. If you want to bring less weight in the backcountry, work your ass off before the season and drop 10-15lbs. Much less weight being carried around than wrappers. Part of the "win" on long hunts is enjoying life. Eating food that looks like it came out of a smashed garbage can doesn't float my boat or give me a mental boost. To each their own.

    • @blakeknobbe8690
      @blakeknobbe8690 Před rokem +4

      The bigger benefit of removing wrappers is saving space. Its all the empty air in the packaging that takes up space. Its also just easier to deal with less trash you'll have to pack out in the backcountry and less chance of accidentally littering. Man, this dude in the video trains super hard all year round. Does it even look like he has 10-15 lbs to lose?

    • @mxracer317

    • @D_Boone
      @D_Boone Před rokem

      Does he look like he has 10-15 pounds to lose? Get real. Most hardcore hunters can’t drop weight, and you want to be at max load anyway, meaning every extra pound of trash means extra gear you can’t take or less mobility on the mountain.
