    What about the "pabitin"? There's prizes that are hanged and they get the prizes but someone tugs it up and down. But, about the blood on the forehead thing, only some provinces do at, but I have remembered a birthday in Bohol where they put blood on the forehead of the birthday boy.

    happy birthday!
    I remember before, I've celebrated my birthday with my colleagues and usually in filipino culture like you said you have to give a "birthday blowout" / "birthday treat". I thought it was also applicable here in the western culture. Long story short, I was about to pay the bill then my colleagues stopped me and told me that they were going to pay for it. I didn't know that when you have a birthday here, they're going to treat you instead of otherwise.

    • @racheyspace
      @racheyspace  Před 7 lety +10

      Thanks Ray! Hope you're doing well :)
      And yes, I've had the same experience where colleagues would pay because it was my birthday. I guess it's different depending on family/person rather than culture?

      It depends..friends usually make money cotribution for the celebration if a friend has no budget ,we would make a suprise party or get together..drink n food and singin(videoke)..the key is if you are a friend you have to be sensitive as to whats the financial status of your friend weeks b4 the date..he or she is a bit broke..time to call evrybody for a planning.

    I experienced that blood-on-the-forehead thing when I was younger. My father would just mark a cross on the forehead using the chicken blood. But that should be a freshly slaughtered chicken. You can't do it yourself if you're the birthday celebrant.

    • @racheyspace
      @racheyspace  Před 7 lety

      Interesting! I'm curious to know if your father would buy the freshly slaughtered chicken from someone, or have to raise the chicken. Are there specifics to that too? I'm just wondering 😊

      @junieabe3583 Před 7 lety +5

    OMG!!! Super Belated Happy Birthday. I literally saw this video super duper late. But I guess better late than never. So about the blood of the chicken that suppose to put on your forehead and you have to cook and eat it the chicken it symbolize for like guidance or more on for you not be close to the like ghost or like not like human like us or in danger and it is not only for us but usually it is use to bless a new place, new house, car or something that you bought or like you have to take care of or use it daily especially when it's not brand new. It's like prayer to drive the souls away especially the bad ones, and if it's like business for it to be successful and to grow bigger. And yeah I'm a Filipina that's why I know about this things literally I'd already experienced it many times. So hey Happy birthday!! :)

    Filipinos are so big on birthdays that for the females, their 18th, which symbolizes them being officially adults, is such a big deal. Traditionally, there is something called a debut which is a huge fancy party for the celebrant/debutante. They have traditions like the Cotillion de Honor, 18 Roses (you pretty much dance with the 18 most important men in your life), 18 Candles (18 people who are the closest to you [usually all female] who will give you their birthday wishes) and the 18 Treasures (these are 18 people [usually include godmothers and aunts] who will be giving you gifts and they have to explain said gifts). There are also others that have been added like the 18 Shots (chosen people who have to answer questions about the debutante, if they get it wrong they have to take a shot, if they got it right the debutante drinks) and 18 Blue Bills (bruh these are just 18 people who will each give you a thousand pesos like what). Although these days, a lot of girls forgo the tradition and instead celebrate their 18th differently - a lot prefer to use the money to travel. But when they do decide to have the debut, it is almost always a grand celebration.

    I love this, that birthdays are special. I'm a United Statesian and I want to make this tradition for my children so they know how special they are! I don't like the mindset here that children will be spoiled if you show them they are special and important. I'm going to be me! And I think I have learned something from the Filipinas today. Thank you!

    • @racheyspace
      @racheyspace  Před 7 lety

      haha "United Statesian" 😂
      I've come across people who judged my parents for "spoiling" me when I was younger just because they gave me a sweet 16, or just because my mom celebrated and made a birthday party EVERY YEAR. It wasn't overkill because ever year that my mom did it for me, I understood how precious life is. I'm glad you'll be doing the same for your children!

      "Harana" or "Serenade" (in English)
      -Harana is usually done when a guy is courting a girl, old school style! He can sing himself or can bring other people along to play a song for the lady :)
      I guess today, it might still be done in rural areas of Philippines but not so much in urban areas.. :)

    Based on experience in Zamboanga City, even I don't have a lot of birthday parties in my life, but my family makes sure to have a simple meal of chicken, soup, saucy food, estofado, kari-kari (for us it's chicken curry and is spicy and not the peanut butter one), endulceao (sugar glazed pork ham or meat with pineapples, mixed in soda, peppers, and sometimes with star anise, and is like a sweetened version of adobo but for large chunks of meat like ham), and we still do sometimes the tradition of putting chicken's blood on the forehead. That tradition is still being done also in urban areas like independent cities, urbanized cities, municipalities, and provincial cities like Zamboanga City (highly urbanized independent city) which were I live.
    According to my parents, an alive chicken is needed to be caught or bought, then killed by slicing a knife on its neck, then get the blood and put some on the celebrant's forehead (the birthday celebrant) in a cross sign (due to Christianity) and this tradition is a mixture of folk and Christian tradition. It is like the anointing with oil or holy water done by most Christians but uses chicken's blood which is from folk and indigenous tradition of offering an animal sacrifice for thanksgiving for a completion of another stage of life or a completion of another Earth's revolution around the sun. It also means that the blood and the offered or sacrificed chicken will be like a protection for the celebrant throughout the day of his/her birthday, because another tradition says that if it is your birthday, then you are open for accidents or for jinxes and curses of elemental beings, that's why blood symbolizes and acts as spiritual protection and the chicken acts as a sacrifice to the spirits around to not hurt or disturb the celebrant, and that no accident would happen to the celebrant especially on his/her birthday. The chicken is then cooked as you wish but most of the time as "pesang manok" or soup with ginger and lemongrass leaves, with malunggay or horseradish leaves, and with sayote or unriped papaya.
    Aside from the sacrificed chicken and the blood for thanksgiving and protection, another birthday tradition (more like superstition in this case) is that the celebrant shouldn't play with knives or bladed objects, stay at home or never go out anywhere dangerous like to have a trip to far places, never climb a tree especially at 12 noon which is believed to be a time when elemental spirits come out, never get wounded, be careful of illnesses and sickness, be careful of accidents and harmful people, be careful of dangerous and unknown or unexplored places, and avoid getting any bleeding or fracture. It is believed that if one of this happened especially on your birthday may lead to misfortune, great accidents and danger, the wound or bleed would not be easily get healed, the fracture will led to even more serious infection, and the blood of the wound may attract more danger, jinxes, and curses around. On the other hand, it just means rest, don't do anything heavy, don't help cooking especially in using knives, and stay at home safe or just go the familiar places and always go to pray in church or at home with a lighted white candle.It also means you need to be protected for you just completed another life stage and entered a new age, and you must be safe and happy that you just completed or almost completed another revolution around the sun.

  • @christianreyllemit7161

    I'm just seeing this now, and yes it is OR was a tradition where my parents would put chicken blood (form a cross symbol + ) in our fore head, but not all of it is done in provinces. Some people living in the cities or urban places practice it as well, but this tradition is slowly fading. I'm a 90's kid and my parents used to put chicken blood on our fore head but as time passes by they seem to not do it anymore.. so yeah.
    ........ and oh!,
    for the games we tend to play these games : Stop dance, paper dance (a lot of dance games),trip to Jerusalem, the boat is sinking (in this game you'll find out who is your real friend like literally!.
