  • In this video we take a close look at KATO's N Scale MyTRAM RED (it's aslso available in blue); item number 14-805-2.
As well as a regular review of the model itself, we strip it down to look at the individual power bogies and see if they can be used to power OO9 scale models as many of us have been doing with the bogies from KATO's Portram/Centram models: Spoiler Alert, they can't.

Best video I have ever seen on the N gauge tram review! It’s a true review video. Awesome

Yes, it's a lovely runner. Just a shame the chassis isn't as useful for modelling as the Portram/Centram models.

I suspect the motor is at an angle by design, to suit the helix angle of the worm engaging with a "straight cut" worm wheel.

Thanks! My knowledge of gears is fairly limited (I usually just care about the distance for a correct mesh) but I can see how that makes sense. Certainly it looks deliberately angled rather than me having broken something, and it runs really nicely.

It’s a shame Kate just don’t sell the original Kato power chassis separately. Would make things so easy.

Yeah, it's really annoying that they don't sell the portram power chassis separately, especially as I believe that when they first went on sale they did sell spares. Even more frustratingly, the datasheet that comes with a portram even annoyingly lists the part number for the chassis (along with the part numbers for two sets of the detailing parts like the pantograph).
