UK Level Crossings Channel I don’t mean to ask such a grim question...but has anyone ever gotten hurt or even killed on this bridge? If so, then it’s obvious as to why...people have no regard for safety...I understand waiting for a bridge to open and close is annoying, especially if people are in a hurry, but that doesn’t give people the right to flat out ignore safety lights, sirens, etc...that’s how deaths and serious injuries occur 💀 I saw a car get t-boned one time because the driver thought he could drive through a red light...I Hope never to see an accident like that again >.
I don't actually know you'll have to look that up. Plenty of cyclists jump the lights here as they don't want to wait. I would wait anyday for this bridge though lol ☺️
How high do you think it raised......this bridge usually does either a 40 degree lift for small boats, or 75 degree lift for large boats. The maximum the bridge can lift to is 87 degrees, which is only ever done if the Queen is passing under the bridge.
Tower Bridge is a double bascule bridge - the northern and southern halves of the central span swing up and away from each other to allow passage of tall vessels. Kingsferry bridge on the A249 south of Sheerness, Kent is a lift bridge - the entire section of roadway over The Swale is hoisted vertically on 4 very large towers to allow passage of tall vessels!
Thanks Modster. I first wasn't expecting the motorbike to weave around the shut gate but then I wasn't expecting the two cyclists to almost hit the closing gate too. The motorcyclist just broke the law and the cyclists could have been hit by a big blue gate.
Sharon Hubbard Sadly, it’s not much better on this side of the Atlantic either! Accidental ignorance I can forgive, but willful ignorance should be considered something that must be cured forthwith at best and borderline criminal at worst!
This is less cool if it's your commute to work and you get caught out on the way home during summer four out of five times in a week. There's a small ship with a single tall mast on hand that they keep going back and forth in tourist season to keep the visitors happy.
Thanks Sam. I thought I might as well film it after a year since I last went. Its really cool to watch but also really packed full of tourists too. Great place to visit though C:
Funny how they're using normal traffic lights here instead of Wig-Wags used at other swing bridges..... But it's obvious that those cyclists have gone behind the stop line; they're past the traffic light.
Just because its a massive tourist attraction and many foreign drivers cross here, it would be more suitable for red/amber/green traffic signals instead of wigwags. The cyclists and traffic should know better.
+UK Railway Hub But I believe that it helps with the PA system used by the Bridge controller so (British) drivers don't get confused as to why there's traffic lights on the swing bridge instead of Wig-Wags; I often hear the announcement reminding them to wait for the green signal before moving off....
The Explorer Returns I’m assuming he meant the wigwags which have an amber light and two alternating flashing red lights. They’re commonly seen at level crossings but are also used at opening bridges (see Newhaven Swing Bridge for example), ambulance & fire stations.
Well, the alarms in this case are for the pedestrians to clear the bridge. I don't know why they stop mid closing as it might have avoided cyclists cutting round the closed gates.
If anything it’s a good thing. They reduce the congestion behind then they go infringe tif the lights. If they cut the lights and go round the gate is when it causes problems. I dint see why they can’t put a red light camera nearby.
we all thought London Bridge falls down like in the song says. London Bridge is falling down, London Bridge is falling, down falling down, falling down.
So4y, why when lifting the bridge wasn't videoed from distance so we could have seen buat passing. How many times the lifting done a day and How long does the lifting take place. When was the construction begin and when was it completed.? thanks

DJ_URBAN_BG: Depends on how many tall ships need to pass through but nowhere near as many these days as when the Pool of London was a part of the Port of London and ships needed to dock at the wharves so that cargo from all over the world could be unloaded and stored in the many warehouses which once lined both sides of the River Thames between London Bridge and Limehouse, and beyond. Building a fixed bridge at this point along the river would have prevented vessels from proceeding further upstream towards London Bridge and so that's why a bascule and suspension bridge was designed and built; and so named Tower Bridge not for the fact it has two towers but for the fact it is next to the Tower of London..
Not sure. It might be because many foreign drivers and pedestrians use this bridge so traffic lights are clear and more understandable than wigwags. This is just a guess.
Have a thick rope raise up at both sides of the gates of the bridge, but only a short distance. Exiting cars can just drive over it, but illegally-entering cyclists will be tripped up, or will have to get off the bike before lifting it over, by which time, the gates will probably be closed!
I really thought European's mindset for traffic was different than here in Latin America where they don't even care about traffic lights and people in motorcycles or bikes were the worst but I'm glad we're not the only ones
Nathan Rigby Well, I have never heard bells ring at this bridge. Only alarms which I presume replaced the bells around 1990s 2000s. There use to be bells on the back of the old GEC Traffic signals. There's some bells on the walls also. Two Klaxon alarms are in use currently I think.
The traffic light is basically just there for decoration...

It only works perfectly because the knackered Victorian engines and lifting gear were replaced in 1974.

Sam Weller this is tower bridge, not London Bridge. London Bridge is a rather disappointing 1960's reinforced concrete bridge.

Level Crossing wig-wag lights are also used at many fire stations.
Yes they are; and at airport runway crossings / low flying aircraft crossings, ambulance stations, lift / swing bridges and a few other places too ☺️
It would be awesome if we had a drone shot of it opening
Whatever we say about cyclists ignoring traffic lights action will result only if any untoward incident happens in the bridge.
I never knew they use traffic lights instead of the level crossing lights
darkblakmagic it would make more sense to have a level crossing
The Explorer Returns I’m assuming he meant the wigwags which have an amber light and two alternating flashing red lights. They’re commonly seen at level crossings but are also used at opening bridges (see Newhaven Swing Bridge for example), ambulance & fire stations.
the alarms went out early usually the alarms go out when the gates are closed
Well, the alarms in this case are for the pedestrians to clear the bridge. I don't know why they stop mid closing as it might have avoided cyclists cutting round the closed gates.
I suspect that the alarms are controlled manually, thus the operator probabaly switched it off.
