Perfect casting for The Comedian.
I read this as the Canadian
🚫🧢
Gotta love Jeffrey Dean Morgan
I agree..... Thomas Wayne from Flashpoint is perfect.
Lies again? MUC MUD
An excellent opening. Here we witness a brutal beatdown of a retired hero. Makes it even more tragic when we learn later on that the killer is the supposed "idealistic visionary" and the victim is a psychopatic maniac.
Spoilers
The comedian isnt really a hero. Not like normal hero anyways.
@@MrMannyhw He's done some bad things. He did bad things to women. He shot kids.
@@Seven_Leaf that's why he is a hero for me
@THE RENAGADE I was talking about the pre-established context. We would learn about Blake's true face later on.
In the comics, the reason Adrian beats the absolute shit out of the Comedian when he kills him is that when they were younger, the Comedian bested him in a straight fight, and Adrian was so drilled towards physical and mental perfection that getting his ass handed to him by a more experienced fighter always gnawed at his colossal ego.
That's interesting to know, thanks
That plus The Comedian being a contracted CIA agent for the government post-super hero out lawing. The comedian both in comic and movie are driving reasons for the exacerbation of the Cold War, thus Ozy feeling like he had to give humanity an enemy that wouldn't result in nuclear annihilation.
@@dethbot0 good point! The Comedian helped cover up Nixon's crimes, and without him in office the cold war wouldn't have got so head.
In the comics what really pissed off Adrian was not just that he lost, but that the Comedian fought dirty and he wasn’t expecting it.
To put up the fight he did against who he was fighting in the condition he was in, The Comedian must've been an absolute beast in his prime!
put up a fight? if absorbing blow after blow until your death is putting up a fight, then anyone can put up a fight. BOZO
@@samueld5418 Yeah that is putting up a fight, my guess you've never had a real one in your life so you've no idea what you're talking about. Taking the blows over and over again and still getting up and fighting back just to take more is what a warrior, a real warrior does. He put up a better fight against him than anyone else in this film.
@@billybatts8283 it wasn't a fight. It was a culling. Even in his prime comedian wouldn't be able to touch a hair of ozymandias
@@adarsh6857 not true
At begining they were on equal foot, manly because the comidian fights dirty
@@miyukidawn9803 ozymandias was trying his best to fight like a normal human by slowing himself. He wanted signs of struggle. Otherwise it's easier to pinpoint that ozymandias killed comedian. We are talking about a guy who can catch bullets easily. Do you think comedian could possibly put up a fight against ozymandias at his full speed??
The tragedy of this scene touches so many levels. I think what really gets me is that Adrian was an idealist believing he could save the world and everyone on it, but the comedian convinced him that there will always be someone who wants to destroy it. So Adrian adjusted his strategies to include collateral damage in all of those major cities where his devices were planted. Deaths to shock everyone out of apathy to make them thankful to be alive and peaceful. The comedian being one of those people who loved violence knew he'd be on the chopping block.
NO, Adrian try to create peace by making Dr. Manhattan as their common enemy so the countries will work together to solve this problem, while also at the same time being afraid as if Dr. M is watching them if they dare threatening the world peace again. Similar with how Light Yagami made the world peace using Death Note, a peace based on fear.
My thoughts exactly. It's actually everyone else besides Ozymandias accomplishing f$%k all honestly. Rorschach was a literal psychopath albeit very intelligent. Dan and Laurie were washed up, impulsive and naïve. The comedian was literally everything wrong with people in general. Dr. Manhattan was so powerful he literally couldn't care less half the time. Adrian is the only one left with actual goals of actually saving humanity from it self. Had he not bombed TF out of numerous cities nuclear war would've killed more than 1000x more. A dark and morally ambiguous hero, but I'm sure he felt no pleasure in his plan.
@@zaxbitterzen2178 Oz was certainly proud of his plans
@@wakwakwakc337 the final result being a success for sure. Oz proved just how predictable people are when faced with big decisions.
"Imagine the perfect fighting man, discovering a plot to end war."
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was absolutely perfect casting. In fact one of the things they got so right in this film was the casting. Ozymandius could have been older, but Goode got the air of effortless superiority down perfectly.
I think Goode did a fantastic job as Ozymandias, but I did have issue with Hollywood not wanting to keep him as a mid-40's aging costumed hero. Half the point of Ozymandias's amazing physical conditioning was that he was mid-40's with the ability of someone in their 20's.
Disagree, Goode was ok-ish, but Veidt deserved a far, FAR better casting than him. Goode didn't have a quarter of the gravitas needed for that character. Not really the actor's fault, as I see it, more whoever cast him, or as we know today, whoever extracted sexual favors from him to get that casting....probably. 100% the case for silk spectre. Don't even pretend otherwise
Wish the fight was longer
Which Silk Specter?@@crazypantz3492
i can’t be the only one obsessed with this quick little shot of them just throwing blows at 0:32 right?
One of Snyder's more underrated scenes, the music , the choreography, the action, the hint to 300, superb x
Unfortunately, it's the last good movie he ever did, and I really mean it. Snyder JL is better than Whedon(it's not a high bar to get over though) but it is not per se a good movie...
@@otakoobman of steel is great and bvs is good

No abuse of slowmos

The Comedian knew the entire plot of the movie before we even knew.
Also, Ozzy had the gun at some point amd could have just shot him but he wanted the beat down to have a personal feel to it
Because years before The Comedian beat his fucking ass in a fistfight, and Ozymandias was still bitter about it.
In the before watchmen comic, they fought before and was nearly equal in hand to hand combat but the comedian resorted to using a "dirty" tactic to surprise Ozymandias. It was technically a tie
@@hidan407 That's a retcon. the original comic made it clear comedian beat him easily and destroyed his idealism
@@stevem7192 Yes, exactly. Although he acts like an idealist, Ozymandias is incredibly proud and contemptuous of others, and his defeat at Comedian's hands shook him. This is a grudge match.
@@abbyappreciator2041 ohhhh ok. Im guessing after the movie came out, they saw how powerful ( rorshach even admitted that ozymandias was pretty much the 2nd most dangerous member after Dr manhattan) they made ozymandias and decided that they should change it so they was almost equals( graceful martial arts vs savage brutality)in hand to hand?
I will defend this movie to my dying day. As a huge fan of the novel, I know this adaptations has some problems, but my god is it visually stunning and captures the imagery of the books! This scene plus the opening credits are in my opinion one of the best openings of a movie ever!
It should have been made into a series
Same here. Loved the novel and felt that Snyder did an excellent job trying to respect the intended format of printed comic panels. Meanwhile, this horse shit fan fiction comes out from HBO that is clearly written by nitwits who don't understand the source material or the original characters.
Honestly, this, Logan, and the Dark Knight are my comic book movie trinity. This has more problems than the other two but as a whole was a beautiful adaptation of very difficult to adapt material
What a silly thing to say. 'Defend this movie 'to my dying day' what are you? Mental? It's a freaking movie. For the record the writer of Watchmen..the actual creator of the comics did not like the movie. We need to respect that. It's a good popcorn flick but it's not faithful to the original story. Period.
You don’t have to defend yourself cause it’s pure facts my dude and I totally agree it’s one of the best adaptations ever made
You can tell the assailant hates the comedian by how brutally he beats him. Then later when you discover it's Adrian and you learn of their history you're like, "Oh okay. That makes sense." 🤣
I thought ozymandias was grateful to comedian because he opened his eyes to saving the world from nuclear destruction and global conflict in general and this was another necessary evil for the "greater good"
no, completely wrong.
The comedian beat in a previous fight its redemption as well.
@@bdeamon1 Adrian called the Comedian "practically a Nazi".
I bet he was quite disgusted by him.
What's messed up is Adrian's face is NOT covered up, and you even see it a few times during the fight, but it's not until later that they connect the dots and you see this fight again and go, "Oh yeah!"
Well I hope this teaches everybody a valuable lesson: Don't move into any apartments on the highest floor.
Hell yeah ground level all the way.
Yeah so instead of throwing you out the window, they'll beat you to death 👍
bro ill take my chances with an amazing view, and less disturbances from the weirdo’s loitering in the first level.
Or you could have a steel bulletproof door
Nah man, if he was in another floor, he may have gotten a worse death than fall damage
I hate that his movie never got the credit it deserves. The best superhero movie and before superhero movies were even a big deal.
X-Men, Iron Man, Hell Boy, and Dark Knight came out before this I think. Also it was pretty slow and preachy in the middle, and I get the impression people who liked the comic were not necessarily also fans of the movie. I think a vocal, but still niche audience is about what it deserves
I still think the Dark Knight is the best Super Hero movie but this isn't far behind. It still has the strongest plot though. It was uneven in spots because for all his skill at making a movie visually appealing, Zach Snyder is no Christopher Nolan.
@@Elthenar Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder collab, anyone?
This film had some amazing moments in but overall I felt it was lacking
Dude. The dark knight AND iron ma came out th previous year. This was during the height of supers coming back into the light
At least the Comedian beat Ozy once when he was younger. He’ll always have that…
I like that this shows how methodical ozzy is. In the comics it showed he specifically prepped for this fight for YEARS, because hed gotten his ass kicked by comedian before. Kinda wish that had been acknowledged in some way in the movie. Beautiful scene
The scene also reinforces just how freak strong and lethal the assassin is (whose identity I won't spoil). I dont know how you chuck a 200lbs+ dude across a room like that and not be superhuman on some level.

Not everyone reacts to a snub with hatred you know...

It is personal when they were younger Comedian beat him in a fight and Adrian never got over that.
Possibly the greatest translation of a graphic comic book novel into film.
Jeffrey is a legend, he had the role of a comedian the role of Negan (and at the moment he is still playing it) the role of John Winchester now he will be in the boys

Knowing it was Adrian all along. It is so obvious now when you see the "assassin's" fighting moves.
I like how when we get a backstory of every hero in the watchmen, they are all flawed not perfect
Sounds like all humans
I felt like the Comedian had it coming for a long time. So how come I’m not enjoying it?
It’s always hard to watch the lonely, dying man struggle bravely before the end. He acquitted himself well. He’d have prevailed over a lesser attacker. Ultimately, he deserved this, and we know it. But it’s still hard to watch…
I feel you, buddy. You'd think a man who did so much wrong in his life would deserve death. But upon seeing it happen like this? It doesn't feel good since we know why he was killed specifically.
im enjoying it
I guess cause its revealed later on when the comedian learned about Ozymandias plan, he deeply regretted all his actions over the decades. If The comedian was still active and exactly the same, it would have been a different feeling
Because the Comedian was not *evil* , he was a cynic with a capital C, and saw the world and people for what it really was. And when faced with real evil, he broke down in tears to the point where he had to seek comfort with the only person he could turn to: one of his enemies.
What make the fight fantastic is that the Comedian show incredible strenght, speed and skill... yet his opponent easily beat him. This sell the mysterious killer way more than if he destroyed a helpless Comedian who couldn't do a thing. Here, it's obvious any normal man would have been absolutely slaughtered by the Comedian
What's funny is except for Dr. Manhattan, they are all technically normal people, who like Batman have trained to the peak of their human abilities
0:59 he’s like oh shit not the table
The fact that Veidt discarded every weapon he got his hands on speaks volumes
The song choice for this scene makes it literally unforgettable. So tragic and beautiful. Every time I think of this movie, This track plays in my mind. The talented Mr. Cole.

i dont see anybody else talking about the absolutely excellent music choice for this scene, for some reason it just fits so well and i genuinely dont know if i would like this scene as much as i do without it
It's like watching the trailer for Dead Island.

He must of regretted owning so many glass tables I know I would of
In Destiny there is a shotgun that references the comedian, I think it's a tribute due to him using a shotgun as well.

Some writer made an interesting point:
The Comedian is what you'd get if the Joker had been co-opted by the system: If he were given license for his murderous nihilism by some secret Black Ops agency. Although part of that nihilism comes from absolutely knowing how absolutely rotten that system is - and still being absolutely loyal to it unto death.
And Dr Manhattan is Superman elevated to the extreme in his powers, lonliness and alienation towards humanity(curious that Supes is a alien that thinks himself as human, and Dr M is a human that thinks himself as alien).
@@piratehunterz947 Note that Dr. Manhattan's Fortress of Solitude really IS a Fortress of Solitude - nobody else can get to it at all (or at least not at Earth's current tech level).
@piratehunterz947 the difference is that superman inherently believed in humanity, even if he couldn't really connect with it. Meeting the Comedian will do that to you I guess.
This was such a good movie when it came out.
It's such a good movie now!

The thing I only just realized about the smiley pin, is that it proves the Comedian was murdered, not suicide. The drip of blood rolling down the edge of the pin could only have formed that way while the Comedian was still standing, but already bleeding, no way it could have left that mark if he just decided to jump out a window on his own.

this movie deserved a sequel or origins prequel or something. with same cast and director. hope they dont ruin with remake though
Better: Remade into a miniseries on any streaming service. More time for character development
They did make a sequel. On HBO. A lot of people liked it at the time, but all it really did is trivialize some of the interesting things about the original.

For those wondering how the comedian was so easily beaten, you need to understand that Ozymandias is the smartest man alive in this story. He can predict and counter every single move that the comedian makes. Not to mention that his “super strength “ was more to do with his great understanding of physics and fighting tactics than anything else. This makes his character all the more fascinating in my opinion
In the novel it's stated that he actually sort of memorized Comedian's technique from their last brief encounter decades before

Afterward you can really recognize the style of combat. But what's strike me is the violence and the risk Ozy take here. Obviously he beat him up badly but he doesnt kill him with the gun then with the knife.. It's weird bc later on he said smth like "Do you think i'll let even the slightest detail if it affects the outcome ?"

The comedian couldn’t see the big picture . So it was imposed upon him. Changes aren’t permanent but change is . Neal Peart. And nobody , no one stands in the way of change .
What?
The whole movie was 10/10. Shame that the campaign was so bad, that it didn't earn for itself. They could advertise it as 80's superhero team, epic Justice League rip off, instead of some mystery sci-fi. WW84 was advertised as 80's superhero movie and it earned (wrongly) hundreds of millions. Yet Watchmen had 1 000 times more 80's in here than WW84.
Maybe Zack should start DCEU similarly instead of chronological order of every original, he should start with superheroes dead and defeated and go with retrospectives, and time travel.

You probably know the easter egg there. 3001 room number turns into 300. A movie by the same director.
My kind of end. If you go out, go out fighting.
Once many years ago Ozymandias actually lost a fight against the comedian. Then the comedian got washed-up and lazy so the comedian we see here is a shadow of a shadow of the unit he was.
In the graphic novel, the Comedian doesn't put up a fight at all. I think he's too drunk. In that story, Ozzie implies that he might have lost a fight with the Comedian 20 years earlier.
“I’ve finally bought what you’ve been selling.”
That is why you should not live on the 30th floor of any building.
Zack Snyder has many weaknesses as a director, but making action scenes is not one of them. On the contrary, he excels in making visceral combat scenes. The music, the effects of the Comedian busting through walls trying to hit his assassin, the knife catching, oh my god this scene is fucking great. Zack knows how to film good fighting and action. When he has a novel or comic to base his movie on, he does a really good job. The cinematography is also very well done in this movie. The costumes. Zack definitely goes the mile when it comes to aesthetics and Watchmen (2009) isn't the exception. He needs a good script writer at his side. And maybe a co director that is specifically hired to talk to actors and get the best performances out of them.
What makes Snyder's directing of action scenes so good is that all of the activity, all of the motions, are clearly visible. No jerky shaky-cam close-ups that obscure everything (a la the overrated Ridley Scott). No, it's mostly told in masters and framed in such a way that one sees every movement.
When he's at his best he makes amazing action scenes but the same techniques he helped revolutionize he also abuses in other movies and makes the action terrible.
This thankfully was not one of those instances. This scene was so well done.
0:49 if you pause the movie you can see Adrian face

why was this man being beaten like that seem personal
It was. Ozzy had a chip on his shoulder ever since a fight with Comedian many years ago that ended badly. The Comedian also had been the one to debunk Ozzy's plans, and in doing so, became the de facto leader.
The Comedian always had the last laugh, and it drove Ozzy furious - even long after his death Ozzy likely contemplated The Comedian's true meaning and significance, and found himself lacking against his infallible reliance on human nature - The Comedian represented everything Ozzy lacked, and so, when it came time to kill him Ozzy made it personal. This was a rare flourish but he needed to know he had defeated the Comedian utterly... because he couldn't defeat him existentially.
