That song was a huge favorite of mine, as was the show. I thought it was a guitar until a guy played it for me in 1979 on the bass in a music store and said no it's a bass, dude😂
That's Joe Osborne on an 8-string Hofner with a pick. Joe played most of the early Partridge Family albums. And I literally grew up hearing Carol Kaye through cheap 5" speakers. That's what playing with a pick does.

That's one of the things that made me like the bass too. it was one of the first things I learned. People ask me ifvi can play it more times than you would think. Of course, Cliff was a big influence on me as well.
Arranging that theme music to feature the bass so strongly, was genuinely clever. Also, it's absolutely ideal for the dual purposes of being _distinctive_ and _inviting._ 🎶😌
Holy flippin hell! That was one of my favorite TV show theme songs. To this day, it'll randomly pop into my head and I'm feeling good. That's an earworm I welcome.
That Barney Miller bass line is killer, always thought I was the only one who dug it. That and The Streetbeater (Sanford and Son theme) are the coolest tv show tunes ever. I saw Cliff on the Master of Puppets tour about 2 months before he was taken from the world. Unforgettable, and he moved around a lot while playing which is hard to do for me. One of my favorite concert experiences. Hetfields arm was in a cast and his tech played his guitar part.
The Barney Miller theme is so great! Used to watch that show every week. That bass line is amazing, but when the electric piano comes in, that seals the deal.
That riff from Barney Miller and the one from Sanford and Son are absolutely killer in their soulfulness, economy and articulation. Rather like I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. Can’t remember the player. Any track by James Jamerson or Carole Kaye too are lessons in how to lay it down.
For me, it was "Starless" by King Crimson. That distorted build up after the first part of the song was mesmerising and thunderous jam at the end was pure magic.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂YEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!! I've ALWAYS LOVED, remembered, and thought that was an outstanding bass line and bit of music!! It makes me smile every time, even now!! One of THEE grooviest EVER! RIP in (musical) heaven, and bless your soul, Cliff!
When I was starting out, if you could play the Barney Miller theme and Mystery Achievement by the Pretenders, you were the sh*t. Cliff's dad does a great William S Burroughs impersonation.
Great bass line! Jaco Pastourius, if I’m not mistaken! Barney Miller was a classic show. When I was younger, back in the ‘80’s, I used to go round my guitarist mate’s place on my days off and watch it. We’d get stoned and get into the cool theme at the beginning and have a great laugh! I’m a bass player and figured that line out. I used to use it as a warm up before gigs, thinking I was pretty smart. What a tosser! 😂
An INTRO to a TV show being cliffs reason to play bass is such a kid thing that I can imagine for him perfectly I love that
“Dudes check out what I learnt”
Remember "Seinfeld"?
I learned how to play bass from that show too
That song was a huge favorite of mine, as was the show.

I know alot of people started playing bass because of Cliff Burton but I got into bass because of Jason Newsted then stuck around for Cliff
Who can blame you, Jason is an amazing bass player in his own right
Cliff and Jason inspired me to play... Yet Jason is my favorite!
First song I ever tried to learn! Not to mention a great show. Mooshie, mooshie.
Jason Newstead prob my favourite. His backing vocals are super solid
Two totally different players that are both terrific 🙏
That is a particularly funky groove for a TV intro.
It’s imbedded in my head indefinitely because Barney Miller coming on my parent’s TV signaled my bed time. I, too, am a bass player.
The Barney Miller theme has one of the best bass lines ever. It always blows me away no matter how many times I hear it. It's mad fun to play too!
Thanks, i wasn't familiar with that theme
that is #1 for bass in a tv show as number #2 for bass in a tv show is in Hawi 5-0 1960's version.
It had some tasty guitar work as well, one in particular as it had variations on the theme.
A lot of us were enthralled with that particular riff.
Knew I wasn't the only one 😂
I still hum that shit. It comes on one of the retro channels too. I always stop to listen to the theme
That is a killer bass line.Always loved it
Night Court is another one with a badass bassline
That's the first thing I thought of when the Barney Miller song came on. I thought the Night Court one was better, but the other one came out first.
Top Comment. You win.
Bingo
The guy who wrote the Barney Miller theme song also wrote the Night Court theme song.
@@TheDinosaur82 Interesting. Guess that's why they're both so good.
I was inspired by that same line. Still think it’s on the short list of coolest bass lines ever.
It was a pretty funny show too. I heard that opening theme a LOT.

I loved that theme when i was a kid, and the bass intro got me instantly.
Inspired by one of the greatest instrumental themes in TV history. I never get tired of listening to it.
Its boomer shit tbh..
Always loved that intro, along with the Mission Impossible tv theme (thank you Carol Kaye!), and of course the Batman tv show (1966) riff!
Check out Mannix. But listen to ultra lounge TV town for a killer version! In fact listen to that whole album.

Wait- D'y'mean the Batman theme..?
Cliff was into sooo much cool music that it rubbed off on Hetfield.
I love the barney Miller theme
That is crazy. That song was the first song I learned to play on the Bass way back in 1984.
It was Danny Partridge for me! Especially when Jodie Foster became his groupie💖
That Barney Miller theme song is up there with Taxi theme song from Bob James.
WKRP closing credit song is also great. Has that late 70s early 80s rock sound. Even they lyrics are great eventhough its absolutely garbage.
The name of the song is Angela

Wow!! Love that groovy Barney Miller intro also!!!! Cool sounds, reason enough.
Barney Miller theme also inspired our bass player even though he started playing bass because of Jean Jacques Burnel...
He also liked acts such as ZZ Top, Sabbath, and Iron Maiden.
also Rush! that's why his early bands were all prog -sounding... that's also why he had a Rickenbacker
When he first met up with Metallica, he was listening to R.E.M.’s “Murmur” on his Walkman.. Which surprised Lars..

Lol. That's the theme that got my chilli's pumping to play bass as well.
70s had some awesome theme songs. Good Times, One Day at a Time , Sandford and Son etc ☘️
It blew my mind when I figured this out because I was inspired by that riff also
In other words. It always comes back to jazz. The true father of metal music.
Makes sense. That's a super iconic bass line, and really no other bass line has had the pop culture impact until Seinfeld
