Gibson and Marshall were forged together in the heavens. what an amazing sound. it just doesn't get any better
Well put!
You mean gibson marshall and GREENBACKS
EVH is like an improved Marshall.
I can't argue with that. My username would give me away
And Fender. A Les Paul or SG with a good Hot Rod or Deluxe Reverb sounds celestial. 👌🏼✌🏼🎸☮️
They both sound amazing, but I prefer the SG. Since the marshall has already such so much low-end and that the les paul provides a lot of low end too, the Sg balances really well. Nice playing!
the les paul has that unmistakable velvet cream tone and the sg got that snarl and bite
the les paul cant bite as hard as an sg, and an sg cant hit some of the tonal ranges of a les paul
there really is no way for me to prefer one over the other. they are both perfect guitars on their own
+KyLesCaster Indeed, well put! Cheers Johan
I hate how people think you have to pick one. I used to be strictly an LP guy...but now I've played Teles and I just bought an SG....broaden your horizons
So, Buy both!
Ok this is easily the best guitar comparison video I’ve ever seen, great job and killer playing. Also I think this has helped me decide on the SG so thank you!
Impossible to dislike any of them. I've always been an SG man but the LP sounds great too. Thank you for another good video!
Thanks glad to hear that!
Been playin LP for decades, just bought my first SG.... WOW! Great bite and my shoulder is lovin it! Chambered LP is great as well... Thanks Johan!
Hi Johan, Guess what i was searching for a comparison video between the two and you have done the hard yards for me superb Job mate!! I reckon no one can do better than you!!! Thanks Man 🙌✌️👍
Your videos make me happy. Thanks for another one!
Thanks, really good to hear :-)
The Les Paul hits hard like a freight train, the SG snarls and bites...both rock n’ roll essentials.
So Killer!! SG, LP, your chops..! All killing it!🤘
Another awesome video! I love the sounds you're getting here! Thank you for all these awesome, informative videos. They are so helpful. Have a great day!
Thanks Richard, have a great day you too man! Cheers
Awesome sound! Awesome gear! ( my two favorite. guitars)
the first video I played today; it's all "downhill from here!"
You rock it, Yohann!
I can't decide so I bought both.. Great tone and licks as usual! ❤
Personnally I couldn’t really tell when he changed guitar. Same pickups, similar construction, similar neck and wood (except for the maple cap) probably same scale lenght... on that video I closed my eyes and my ears couldn’t tell when he switch. Great demo😀👍
Johan, I wouldn't mind living next door to you man! Great stuff! 👍🏻
Thanks, if you're ever in Sweden just drop by
Love seeing a demo with the player standing... in front of a FULL stack. Great comparison. Have an R9. Need an SG now.
+Jeff Thanks man! :-)
Both sound great, but for me SG wins - sounds much tighter! Been playing SGs for my entire gigging life and never found a better guitar personally
I love the cords progression at 1,37 to 1,50 💪🏻
Dig em' both being a Gibby fan, and my Mom growing up in Kalamazoo Michigan, but this has me wanting to get an SG. Can't go wrong either way!
Yeah indeed
Great playing my friend Well done!
i love them both, so i had to get em both lol.......awesome videos man!
sounds great...The sg has a more mid focused tight tone. The LP is a little looser all over. The amp sounds like it should...awesome!!
Johan, they named an amp after you. It's called the Tone King 👑
Great sounds!
Love that first riff. Both sound great! :)
Thanks, glad to hear it!
It's like choosing between chocolate and peanut butter. Can't I have both?
:-) yeah it's cruel
Ben Randolph Yep Its called Reese's
what i do is get them both, morph them into the same guitar, and boom. there you go.
Johan Segeborn Right when you play the Sg I was thinking (ACDC) Because My favorite Guitarist is Angus young
SG all the way...
The SG coming out of that Marshall stack…..that’s the sound right there.
its a tie, they both sound AMAZING!!!! I'd be honored to play either one but I have a soft spot for SG's considering it's the only electric I have or will ever need =)
Very difficult to pick a favorite out of the pair ! Most would choose LP because of appearance. I find the SG more comfortable to play. Thanks Johan !:)
Thanks, yeah the SG is the most comfortable guitar of em all :-)
At the end of the day a great guitarist like this guy could make a squier sound like a PRS. In reference to the vid, I prefer the crisp sound of the SG better but both are guitars I wish I owned together. Great setup BTW bro 👍
+Legolas Greenleaf Thanks my friend!
Johan Segeborn You are most welcome bud.
you have a good sound man,,,, congratulation... you rock!!!
Jose Domingo Gonzalez Vasquez Thanks Jose, makes me glad! Cheers Johan
Is it me, or did it look like you had the most fun with the Les Paul ;) both sounded awesome. Great vid!
AscarinVin I played it last so I was warmed up :-)
SGs are so badass
Great video!
What a coincidence! I compared my R7 LP and '71 SG Standard this past week. In my results, the LP was more mellow and the pickups were hotter (vol 3 on LP was = to vol 7 on SG) The SG was more aggressive sounding. Both sounded fantastic but quite different. THANKS!!
Thanks, yeah the T-tops are great mics. Did you record the comparison? Cheers Johan
All I have at the moment is a Zoom Q3 stereo mic. I didn't feel it would be sufficient for an online comparison.
Great sound n style
+Heavy Psych Thanks! :-)
The Les Paul is a slight bit fuller, but I dig the AC/DC snarl out of the SG. Both sound fantastic through that amp. Helps having a great player doing the video as well.
+Lee Syrjanen Thanks Lee :-)
SG for sure but it’s hard for me to differentiate between which one is better. They both sound really good and have their differences. I love les Paul’s sound wise and look wise but I definitely prefer the SG. They’re just so biting and they make so many different tones
Best deco ever (Marshall's rules) !! :p
And great demo I'd love to play in front of a full stack like that, even if it's only a bedroom level !
Thanks man yeah the design is timeless
It's a devil screaming!
It's an angel singing!
It is the pounding of creation's hammer upon the anvil of time.
It's fucking awesome!
+SevenRiderAirForce Brutal! :-) Cheers!
1:55 I hear Rage Against the Machine. Great video. Hard to decide. Both sound great. I would pick SG for a long gig than Les Paul.
Thanks, Yeah Rage is a favourite of mine :-)
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thanks Gabriel!
It's becoming screamingly clear that I, a LP lover through and through, have been in need of an SG for quite a while.
SG has such a beautiful sound! :)
+AaNu Arif thanks it has indeed
:)
Now there's a living room! 2 full stacks , we all want to live there ,,
The SG has more attack. The LP is a bit warmer. Both sound amazing.
+Spencer Pie Thanks Spencer! The SG is indeed punchier! Cheers Johan
Hello johan! Always enjoy your videos! Wondering did you use attenuator for this video, and how do you set up your attenuator for full stack . Cheers!
This is why i like SGs.
I own both. Both great!
Nice guitars, I dig the SG more... also, I dig your taste in painting (seems like you're really into Edward Munch)
Subtle... The R9
I bet that 1959HW could make a broomstick sound good.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks, yeah it's a great amp
The tone you get in your videos is always perfect, its always clear and cutting yet super fat! Will you do a vid on the bassbreaker 007? And how well does the tone in your videos represent the sound in the room, i'm guessing you're pretty good at miking ;)
+That smelly guy on the train Thanks, I try to get it to sound like it does in the room, that usually gives the biggest tone. And I will definetly do the Bassbreaker 007 which I get the chance :-) Cheers Johan
SG !!
SG - Best !!!
excellent
I've always, and always will, love the sg way more, not because of the tone but because how it feels in my hands. It's so perfect. the body is is skinnier and lighter and the neck feels amazing.
It’s been 8 years. I no longer have an SG because I’ve converted to the Les Paul team lol
God Bless You
Les Paul gets my vote. More complex sound. I think that maple top brings a lot to the party.
I love both guitars, but there has always been something about the SG that felt more lively to me.
+safnhuo Thanks!
Best room ever
Yeah this is bedroom volume level so the room certainly doesn’t hurt. Cheers
I have an RO Les Paul and a vintage SG and love both. In this video the LP sounded better.
Hi Johan, sweet video! What reverb do you put on the recording please? I love the super open sound. Thanks!
The difference is so subtle. I think both guitars can do the same thing.
and that sg kicks ass
+runingblackbear Thanks :-)
can you do a short video on how to fix neck dive???? theres got to be more than a few ways to DIY, thanx
I suck at telling the diffrence in tone, but here they both sound similar, however, the SG sounds a bit more snappy, whereas the Les Paul has a bit more bottom to it. But otherwise very close
SG just sounds so much better.. usually does
I love both guitars but I do prefer the Les Paul for the way it hangs on my body when standing up and playing.
With that setup there would be no complaining from me either way! 😂 But I do prefer the SG. I own both and grew up with the LP but once I got an SG I fell in love and rarely pick anything else up these days
gibson sg❤❤❤❤
Thanks Marcello
Fantastic tone...I like the les paul more:)
Another great vid, the SG sounded nice!!! Hey you're standing!!! Did you have a hot plate on this vid?
Thanks Charles, yeah the hotplate is set at -16dB and nine o clock on the continous dial. And yeah it's a strange experience to stand and play I never do that! :-)
Come to Nashville man!
That would be my pleasure! :-)
It's obvious he enjoyed the Les Paul more. More Paul for him!
Les Paul for me, in spite of being a huge Black Sabbath fan, I recently got a LP Standard, I find it fuller in tone
+tizio caio thanks, I'm a huge sabbath fan too :-)
where the pickups on both neck and bridge at the same height? in this comparison the les paul seemed to have more distortion i assume it is because of the pickup height
I wonder if there's a big difference between an amp against the wall vs further away vs in the middle of the room...
Yeah, the SG.
+Tom Grubbe Thanks Tom
I love the feel and sound and weight of an SG, but don't like how flimsy the neck feels. Les Paul sounds just as good, plays just as nice, while feeling like a solid chunk of wood.
+Gary Dotson yeah, it requires a lighter touch/grip on the neck for correct tuning. I prefer LP for that reason too
Hi Johan, great sound - as usual. Here I think your SG sounds a little bit better.
Which pickups have you got in both guitars?
Gary Slash Thanks Gary, I've got Custombuckers in the SG and Burstbuckers II in the LP. Cheers
Both great! SG has more bite and LP is fatter. Great job Johan
+Tassos Vogiatzis Thanks Tassos, glad to hear that!
Hey Johann, noticed that you're playing with the strap very low on this older video. Changed the strap height?
SG !!! Poison !
Both are great. SG for me though.
***** Thanks :-)
love the video-sounds like the SG had a bit more bite-I have Burstbuckers in my Gary Moore model and I love them-must be nice to play thru a full stack(settings?) don't your neighbors complain? how loud is it in your place? keep rockin !!
Thanks! i used a hotplate -16dB and nine o clock on the continous dial. So it's relatively quiet. The settings are bass 0, mid 10 treble 7, prec 8, vol1 8 vol2 -10 but I used the two channels separately. Cheers
Great video!! Really awesome sounds youre getting. What strap were you using?
+grrojo Thanks! :-) that's the strap that came with the R9. Many are leaving it and the rest of the "case candy" in the case in an attempt to increase possible collector value, which is absurd considering the production volumes :-) Cheers
I like the sound of the SG but I like the look of the Les Paul.. A LP with CustomBuckers would be perfect ( 2013+ historics )
+Rofael Nano Thanks! Since this video I have actually put a Custombucker (Alinico III)in this LP! Works great :-) Cheers
Yes Sir..........⚡️🎸⚡️🎸
Noticed Some Know Your Enemy by RATM thrown in there ;)
+Chillo56 A favorite band of mine!
I love rage!
he SG sounded a little clearer to me and not as compressed, which makes sense given the differnce in body mass. You'd never tell the difference in a mix though, and i bet the SG is 30% lighter!
Yeah! 2.9 kg vs 4.0 kg
I have both, you can tell the difference. A les paul will push an amp harder even with the same pickups, because of the way its built... There's no better though. They're equal in my eyes. Very diverse guitars... I grew up a Fender man but I'm learning a lot about Gibson as I go too and I love having both in my arsenal now. Yin-yang if you know what I mean
Both sound great but that SG sounds like it could do some serious damage.
Nice vid, yeah les paul sounds fuller but they are so heavy... To me its more of a studio guitar.
Hi Johan, the R9 still has Burstbuckers inside right? Maybe the difference would be more obvious with better PAFstyle pickups in the Les Paul, because BBs always sound a bit more mid focused with less highs, and so they easily match to the sound of the SG. Greetz from Germany ;-)
Lukas K Thanks Lukas, yeah it still has the BBII pickup. I may be puttin my Screambucker in the R9. Cheers
I prefer the SG because you can roll off the tone a bit to get the same creaminess as the LP. However, you can't quite get the bite of an SG with a LP
Both are Les Pauls. The SG is the modern version. The SG is thinner and lighter and that makes the tone a little less fat. I like the SG more. I have a 1968 SG Junior and love it.
SG sounds so prickly and "sparkling" (or how do you describe it?). P.S. You may try Tele as well.
i need an SG in Cherry so beautiful and ive read that is has more high end then my LP, but i wondered what changes does it make if i play my Seymour Duncan SH-4 and SH-5 with and without pickups covers? :)
+Jonas Jørgensen depends what theyre amade out of, if the covers are brass then with the covers theres reduced hight end, if theyre nickel silver i think ? (cant remember) then there wont be a difference
then its the nickel ones i aim for
My dream is running my Gretsch Black Falcon through one of these. I wonder how that’d sound....
It would sound great, I have a Gretsch Duo Jet, and they sound great with a Marshall.
whats the neck profile like on that sg? my new 61ri has a baseball bat neck. not quite what I was expecting
+Christopher Alchin It's got a thin early 60s neck. Weird with a 61RI with a fat neck.. I do use fat necks on all my LPs though
Cheers Johan
My boyfriend has a les Paul guitar it's 20 years old and omg it sounds amazing thru his Marshall
