  • DR650 modifications: Which mods should be done to this Dual sport motorcycle?
    The first models introduced were the Djebel/Dakar and the RS that were both kick start. In 1991, the first electric start model was introduced, namely the DR650RSE. In 1992 the Djebel/Dakar model was replaced with the DR650R. This model also saw improvements in the exhaust system and a smaller fuel tank.
    In 1996 the DR650SE was introduced, replacing the previous models. The engine was radically redesigned, reducing its power but allowing for more smooth delivery. The 2010+ SE model has the factory option of lowering the seat height by 40 mm for shorter riders. This involves lowering the front and rear suspension. A shorter side stand is also needed. The SE seat is narrow and firm. The SE has no tachometer but with standard gearing will cruise comfortably at 110-115 km/h. It has digital electronic CDI ignition and a coated cylinder bore to reduce weight. The exhaust pipe is made of stainless steel painted black to stop rusting. For a single cylinder bike, it is quite smooth due to the effective balancer shaft. The 40 mm Mikuni BST40 carburetor gives smooth power flow. It has electric-start only. The 21-inch front tire gives good directional control on gravel roads but is still fine for fast riding on sealed roads with the standard tires. The front fork is non-adjustable while the rear mono shock is adjustable for preload (through a tricky-to-access threaded collar) and for compression damping.
    A 2000s model DR650SE with aftermarket tank bag
    As of 2023, after 27 years, the model is still in production and was the best selling over-500cc bike in New Zealand. The bike is often in the top five sellers of any capacity bikes in New Zealand. The DR650 is also a big seller in Canada and previously in Australia. The DR650 is no longer available in Australia due to the new safety regulations which came into effect on 1 November 2021.
    The DR650 has been unavailable in Europe since 2001 due to stringent emission regulations which make it virtually impossible for a non-fuel-injected machine to pass.

      Haha yeah it really is crazy. Mine has a lot done to it already but I still managed to spend all day modding it today lol.

    Your carb issue could come from the petcock being on the "pri" (prime) setting that i noticed yours is on. Its a vacuum fed fuel system, and there is no off position. "On" means that when the bike isnt running, no fuel comes out. Prime will gravity feed you carb . When u remove the tank, youll find out real quick the with the lever pointed to the pri setting fuel just dumps out

    Like your videos. Always direct and essential info. I have a heavily modified 2017 DR 650. Cogent Dynamics front and rear sprung for my weight 210 lbs. seat concepts seat with the medium grip cover. Should have gotten the grippier one. Airbox mod, carbuerator jet kit, T-Rex crash bars and skid plate, engine case covers, pannier racks with Giant Loop bags and tank bag. Acerbis large fuel tank, Leo Vince exhaust, big off road foot pegs, wrap around handguards, short windshield, braided brake lines, upper chain bumper removal. Probably more stuff but these mods make the most difference. Handles great and is a smooth, old school operator. Easily obtain OEM and aftermarket parts to fix anything. Built to outlive me.

  • @memorris2
    @memorris2 Před 7 měsíci +2

    If u open up the airbox, dont just cut the top off. Use a hole cutting drill bit and make holes that you can plug up with rubber plugs if needed.

  • @davida1679
    @davida1679 Před 8 měsíci +2

    Definitely completely remove that upper chain roller and install a flush head bolt seal up the empty hole. Also a DRZ 400 front fender is a great looking replacement for the DR

    Sweet DR bro... Sounds awesome 💪! I Can't stand fairy lights, That's how you know it was never off-road 😆. My best mod so far...D606 Tires. Then Renthal bars with Rox risers. The stock bars will bend first time you lay it down plus I'm 6' tall.🤘

    @nseric1233 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Be careful with your low air pressures.
    I got a pinch flat at 20psi when I hit a small rock with my mt21 front tire. It's a really good tire but soft, I run 25psi in it all the time now.
    Upgrading the suspension is the best thing to do to a dr650 if you use it off road.
    I did mine 5ish years ago with a ricor shock and fork inserts. I dont think it's available anymore but the cogent stuff from procycle is just as good or better.

    I have a TM40 carb and FMF pipe and it pops on deceleration. Completely normal on a DR650 like that.

  • @bbevis2357
    @bbevis2357 Před rokem +5

    Nice DR! I bought my DR650 for $400 as a project and have slowly built it up to be a great bike. Some notes about your bike - You actually have an aftermarket Mikuni TM40 carb. A very nice upgrade over stock! The popping on decel is 100% normal with an aftermarket exhaust for this particular bike, but you should adjust the fuel mixture screw correctly. Also, the valve adjustment does not require removing the cam chain tensioner or piece on the cylinder head you showed. Instead, it has 2 inspection covers and screw type valve adjusters. Very easy. More likely it has had some other top-end work done.

    • @MotorcyclesOffroad
      @MotorcyclesOffroad  Před rokem +2

      All this is good news to hear. But there must be some misunderstanding about what I said about valves. I was simply suggesting since the engine has been open things may have been done to it. I am familiar with valve adjustments and getting top dead center. I actually like to take the plug out and turn the engine manual with my thumb over the hole to ensure I am on the compression stroke as I line up the hash make through the sight port. I didn't know it was a TM40 carb, so that is very useful to know. I also found out I have one of the better exhaust pipes, a "40" written on the side.

    Congratulations on your acquisition. I have a 2017 that’s heavily modified. Cogent Mojave suspension, projet carb kit, Seat Concepts low seat for aggressive Offroad and a taller Sargeant “All Day” seat for heavy loads and longer trips. Also large Acerbis tank, and assorted miscellaneous farkles. It’s been fun to mod and ride. Will outlive me. Next mod will be lower front sprocket to 13 tooth for slower Offroad terrain.

    I've been riding since I was 8. Started working in my own bikes when I was 16. I'm 45, now. I've literally never dropped air in my tires. Just adjust your riding style. We aren't 4x4s. you don't need to air down. And you'll avoid pinch-flats.

    I'm excited to see your new bike as it's also on my shortlist along with the 300 Rally. How is the DR's first gear ratio compare to the Rally's for slow technical single tracks, and also on the highway? How do the 2 bikes compare on the highway at 65 mph - stability, vibration, etc. How do the 2 bikes feel for weight differences? I'd love to see you do a comparison video on these 2 bikes?

    I was gonna suggest something like Barkbusters but sounds like you’re gonna do that soon anyway. Have you ever tried a tubeless conversion for the tires? That may be good if your in the sand and rocks a lot. Otherwise I’d leave it and ride it and get a good feel for the bike.
