    My 2 cents about why engine busted, with the little info given here, it doesn't look like a lube problem or lack thereof. Older fuel without preservative loose their octane rating quite quickly, What the new owner should've done is over-mix octane booster in the fuel and fill the tank up with max octane rating gasoline + preservative. And of course pre-mix good quality 2stroke oil . If one runs low octane fuel, you get a high risk of power-robbing pre-ignition and worst, damaging detonation which cause massive spikes in pressure tin the combustion chamber hat no engine can endure for long. The results are generally burnt through pistons and broken connecting rods and sometimes crankshaft. No amount of extra 2 stroke oil would compensate for this. Ladies, gents, if your run your boats only on weekends, do yourself a favor, regularly add preservative to your fuel, you may very well save your engine by helping your fuel retain its octane rating. FYI octane rating on its own has nothing to do with more or less horsepower, It is a measure of the relative speed of the flame front in the combustion chamber after ignition. You do not want that flame front speed to go supersonic because this is called detonation not combustion and is extremely destructive. a higher octane rated fuel has a relative lower flame front speed than a lower octane rated fuel. hope this helps someone, Cheers!

    • @bimmerwman
      @bimmerwman Před 5 lety +2

      Thank you for that detailed explanation. Not many people realize that the higher the octane, the slower the burn. This allows the mixture to enter the cylinder completely and burn at the most efficient and safe rate. This is even more important for a 2 stroke.

      Good thought, sounds like voice of experience. Degraded old gas, pre-ignition, piston wrecks.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch Před 3 lety +2

    A hole in the piston is sign of detonation,specially at the spark plug tip.
    Low octane fuel,or a too lean mixture do that ,and hot cylinder temperatures.
    Maybe the old gas wich lost its octane rating,coupled with the fact that cylinders do not run at the same temperature depending on their position relative to each other and coolant circulation.

      Darren N on some of them you don’t. My 92 Mercury takes straight pump gas in the tank. On the side of the block there is an oil tank with lines going to the carburetors. Now the problem with that design that I never thought of is the mixer can fail. In fact that’s what happened to mine. I now have a ticking sound even with the premix fuel so I don’t use it

    • @AnthraxBird
      @AnthraxBird Před 5 lety +5

      @@redneckwithajeep5001 Yup, the oiler system can fail especially if its old. On some 2 strokes you cant bypass it either and run straight premix. When it does fail, goodbye engine!

    • @theown32
      @theown32 Před 5 lety +10

      most of the time that will not cause a broken rod. That normally causes scored piston walls and loss of compression because the piston is not lubricated. Broken rod sounds like an over revving issue while running out of water. but anything is possible.

    The boat looks good on the water. If you are getting to the red line for revs @ 40Mph you have lost top end speed but you will have more pull and get up and go low down. No worries unless speed is an issue for you. The 4 blade could still live on board it would be a great spare. If you raise the nose with the trim tabs and reduce your wet area your speed will increase. High speed plane on or about the last third of the hull or if all else fails a new prop.

    Your trim tabs are plowing through the water. A hydraulic jackplate may help with top end also.

    I know this is older but it is easy to get rid of old gas pump it into a open top 55 gal drum a light it it will burn off.

    Ive seen this before, usually happens if:
    1. tank oil lines become loose / crack apart or become disconnected
    2. oil tank sensor fails
    3. they put the wrong oil (motor/gear oil)
    4. total idiots run without any 2 stroke oil in the oil tank

    • @travisbarr5367
      @travisbarr5367 Před 2 lety

      A fix for the oil tank sensor failing is to delete it and mix the oil and gas at a 50 to 1 ratio. I have done that to all my 2 stroke boat engines and have had no problems. My favorite 2 stroke is the 90s plain Johnson motors

    Get rid of that trim fin bolted to the lower unit gain 4-5 mph, don't need it now that you have trim tabs.

    Let me see if I got this, you sold it, they blew it up and you took it back and put another engine on it for them or what's the deal. I'm just curious. You answered my question at the end of the video, thanks. Personally that's something I wouldn't have done, especially after a month had passed. Hope to didn't pay full selling price....
    Thanks for the video.

    I've learned that once you get up on plain if you raise the motor just a little bit you can gain another 4-5 mph or maybe more with that big motor. Try it out. Not much just a couple quick thumb bumps on the trim. You will here the engine room raise and you will go faster

    • @MysticWhitetailBuckHunters
      @MysticWhitetailBuckHunters Před 4 lety

      That’s a pretty common thing to do. When you do that your taking more of the boat out of the water causing less drag allowing the boat to work easier but if you take the prop to far out of the water the boat will start to porpoise and then you know you’ve gone to far. But I’m sure you know all of this I’m just saying for other people

    • @aaronwood3540
      @aaronwood3540 Před 4 lety +1

      Right that's why I mentioned just a couple thumb bumps on the trim. I noticed in the video the motor appeared to be all the way down and he was running 40. So I thought I'd throw a tip that maybe he wasn't aware of. You are correct if you raise it to far you will lose power. But just a little bit you'll gain a few mph

    Nice results with the boat. 4 blade prop is like multiple engines, it doesn't make you faster it just gets you out of the hole a bit faster. Not you fault its a common misconception

    Get a 55 gallon drum and remove it with a long fuel line attached to a 12v external fuel pump and another long length of fuel line. Have clean harbors or whoever deals with that around you remove it. Be careful doing it of course because the pump needs power.

    can you tell me some thing more about this boat. for instance the length, the make... company that made it, year of the boat .. the reason for asking i really like this small compact boat and wondering how well it would do out at sea ..

  • @aaronwood3540

    40 is nothing to be ashamed of, however once you get going, raise the trim just a little and the ROMs will come up and the boat will go faster. I'll bet you can get 45+.
