2001 C5 CORVETTE Z06 goes under the knife! New crank seal, ARP pulley bolt and Pinning the Crank!!

  • The first time I did this job , I most likely didn’t tighten the crank bolt to spec… so we’re here again!
In this one I'm pulling apart my 2001 C5 Z06 for the second time to replace the crank seal. This time I'm filming it so other weekend warriors can get a sense of the process. there is also 2 "while we in there" items. first is replacing some old tensioners. Also were gonna mess with pinning the crank pulley.

what I got out of this video is a tremendous gratitude that I am retired and can afford to hire this job out. It was also greatly appreciated to share a bit in the wonderment and joy of youth, then I got back to the sincere gratitude that I won't have to deal with this undercarriage stuff when my time comes, because I am too old for such a struggle to gain much satisfaction from a job well done. I would probably just have memories of a contest that must be seen to the end, no matter how I really felt about it , and body pain the next day.
Until I started getting exposed to modern american cars, I had never seen an automobile belt pulley that wasn't pinned, and I was impressed at the demonstration of ability from a non professional to do the work in a home garage. I also gained the knowledge about also doing the while I am in there stuff, some service managers aren't real forthcoming with that kind of information, preferring that you find out later when you need another repair, what a knowledgeable person would have done.

Excellent vid. I genuinely appreciate it when the really hard parts are not left out. Plus I struggle doing any work on my C5Z so it makes me happy when other people do as well. Bc it’s total BS when you watch videos and nothing goes wrong. Torn knuckle, stripped bolt, next to impossible to get to bolt, etc is real life!

Fun fact for anyone looking to do this. You don't have to lower the subframe at all to get the power steering rack out like most people think. Just pull the rack about half to 3/4 the way to the passenger side. Then lift the driver side of the rack. You can pull it out the top of the car significantly easier. No moving of anything besides the rack.

Just torqued down the ARP bolt today and it wasn't too bad. Granted I did take out the radiator and fans because I installed a upgraded cam, but you can stand up just barely if you aren't too big and pull sideways with the torque wrench and it wasn't bad. Pulling it from below I could understand the jack coming into play lol. Thanks again for the laughs.

Love your video, especially comments from junior !
Watched about 20 or so clips on this issue before tackling my own (C6 )
Not one person, including you , ever mentioned a thin shim/ seal type gismo I found at the back of the stock balancer . ( It actually sits further in on the crank than the crank main seal.
It does show in the parts dept. schematic .
My question being , do I need this part on an aftermarket balancer ?
    Anybody ?

      @@mediocrecarguy4979 Thanx 4 the reply.
It is not a sensor , just a thin shim with a circumference rubber seal .
I found a very interesting use for this shim when using a keyed balancer.
This shim seems to eliminate putting ATV in the slot for the key , because that shim covers the Keyway perfectly and certainly avoids messing around with ATV sealer..
      Have a good one .

      @mediocrecarguy4979  Před 2 lety +2

I’m about the farthest thing from an expert, but I’d guess the bolt came loose, allowing the pulley to walk forward a small bit, misaligning the belt and chucking it. Oil seal could be a victim of all this shit. Mine was.
If you caught it quick I’d imagine the engine would be fine. Seems like heavy damage to the crank snout is most common injury. Hope this helps.

@@mediocrecarguy4979 I think that the dependable service record of this part in so many applications proves the worth, with some corvettes never needing a replacement for the life of the engine , has the stock balancer severely under rated by gossip on the internet, where the OEM part is considered hopeless junk and everyone needs a five hundred dollar pulley. Obviously if you continuously use the car outside of the anticipated design window, the stock part will throw objections, but on the internet it is easier to blame the part than think it out why the old part failed.
Of course, If you are spending for the big labor to remove and install this part, a better than stock part starts to make more sense.
