  • The Soon to Close London Alleyway Which Crosses the Angerstein Wharf Branch!
I'm pleased to say that since this video was made the crossing has been saved!
A little walk in London on a hot Summer's day to see this urban curiosity which will soon be lost. We start in a residential area before walking through the tunnel between town houses, to find the crossing itself. We then walk up to Westcombe Park Railway Station.

My middle name is Charlton cos my father was a Charlton fan but also worked at Charlton signal box and Charlton Lane signal box where apparently my late father foisted me upon my late mother back in 67 (most imaginable eeeeeeew moment in my life being told that), got a lot of family history round there as descended from the famous Cecil Watson of Greenwich and my great grandfather another Cecil spent his entire police career pounding the beat between Greenwich, Woolwich and Blackheath without arresting anyone in 20 plus years. He used to warm up in Greenwich's Prince of Orange, then boldly stride across Blackheath to the pubs in the village and on the heath, less boldy walk to the Royal Standard for another aperitif or three, then working his way down to Shooters Hill, more pubs, into Woolwich and a few hoisted with the folk from my old regiment, checking all of Woolwich's pubs hadn't been stolen he merrily wandered back through Charlton to Greenwich West nick to sign off and go home to a scolding by me great gran.

My youngest was the last female to be born in Greenwich hospital before its closure, one of my favourite pubs in whole of London was the Pilot over near the Blackwall portal, used to be a little freight railway there too for the long gone gasworks and no doubt long gone Tunnel Refineries which made the whole of south London stink of rendered horses on summer days, if the wind was in the right direction you could be in Mitcham and smell Tunnel Refineries.

At the end of the video, just behind you is near to Jules Holland's south-east London recording studio, Helicon Mountain. Before I retired I commuted up and down this line for about 40 years. Always looked out at the studio as the train passed out of the station. Interesting tour. Thanks.

So at the end Henry when you say 'I'm going to walk up the hill' you would have walked past St Cecelia place at the end of the parade of shops. This is the entrance to Jools Holland's recording studios. It cuts back down to the railway line and part of the studio is a railway building. Many Rock n rollers have worked there Bono and Robert Plant to name a few. Not particularly train stuff H but its an interesting place. Great Vid again.

Though Jools himself is a keen railway enthusiast.

All SE division measurements are from the buffers at Charing X, usually the measurement starts from the ultimate terminus that line is part of. The bridge signs on Cannon St point to Charing X because there is the logical triangle at Borough Market Junction. Such a shame as I remember the signal box at Westbourne Pk, they all disappeared in the earlier part of the seventies as London Bridge Power Box was brought in, I remember the little box at St Johns, the fancier one at Lewisham, Norwood Jnc, Forest Hills adorable Odeon, even Gloucester Rd Jnc with its massive Odeon looking over the 4 way mainline junction, all gone although Forest Hill lingered as a relay room for many years then NR demolished it.
