My dad worked for British rail in the 70's on the sleeper train when i was a kid, he used to take me and my brother and sister and mum with him on the odd occasion and we'd get the sleeping cabins. I loved it on a train at night time. It was Glasgow to London and back again. I'd come back home with a big cardboard box full of little packs of biscuits with 3 biscuits in each pack and swapped them all with my mates for sweets n stuff....happy days.

How did I find myself here? Bedtime in North Carolina, watching a Steve Marsh video most evenings before turning the lights out, and relaxing with Steve’s video journeys and commentaries, before listening to the terrific music he picks at the end. Heck, I even find myself a bit anxious every video wondering if Steve will find something to eat, then enjoying his “food finds” for the trip. This train gets mixed reviews, but it's something that should be experienced if you can afford it. And yes, the price considers its value as a hotel room, but a hotel would allow you to get a full night's sleep! The Caledonian Sleeper occasionally suffers from maintenance issues, notably showers that are cold or inoperative as well as the temperature of the cabin, but the staff does what they can to keep you comfortable. And some people really appreciate having their own toilet!
There are two sleepers. The Highland Sleeper that comes from Fort William, Aberdeen and Inverness. That joins up at Edinburgh Waverley at about 1am The lowland sleeper goes from Edinburgh and Glasgow and joins at Carstairs...unless covid had changed this?🤔 The seated compartment is not good for an overnight journey and my biggest gripe is that it's very much sold as a luxury product which doesn't really provide an alternative to flying. What a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing. Your trans look so much nicer than ours. My wife and I are planning a train trip across Canada this year for our 32 wedding anniversary. Their trains are even older than ours - I think they date back to the 50's - but the rooms have been remodeled and they are very well maintained. I love long train trips!
So much fun watching you travel.... though I would've stayed in London a tiny bit longer... taken in a museum maybe... but great to see a video that has such a truthful ring to it, thanks!
Hi Steve, another great video full of information and great shots of your arrival into Edinburgh, you have a very rare knack of drawing you in as if you are just talking to the individual, great thing to do, as always video was great.
Wonderful video, again bringing back memories of taking the Sleeper from Inverness down to Euston, which was a long trip for me after taking the regular train down from Thurso first. I rode of the older sleepers back then when they were pulled by those maroon colored EWS engines. The compartments only had one plug in those days and only for electrical shavers and not for charging phones. Thanks for the memories!!!!
Scotland's Ambassador has done it again. Great travel idea, for a casual traveler or tourist with amble time, the train is an option for sure. Sure the prices might be a little steep, but that's cool. The nacho's looked good (extra jalapeno's please). For myself and others who do not partake in rail travel, your sacrifice was appreciated, video'ing the room and other rail cars. Suppose there is a bit of excitement anyway and would be hard just to demand one's self to sleep. Closing with a pleasant audio selection. Thank you much!
Well another fantastic video and the train journey is something kean likes the look of unfortunately our trip to your fair land has been postponed due to my mum losing her battle with cancer on new years eve but we have rescheduled our trip so we will definitely look at the sleeper option instead of flying kean asks did you not fancy a go at driving the train 😀 anyway thank you again Steve for entertaining my boy and me in this difficult time for us and we look forward to coming to Edinburgh very soon stay safe out there from joff and kean 😍
I too enjoyed watching this Steve. So good to enjoy your friendly travelogue from the comfort of my desk (with a wee snifter). Many years ago I would begin my working day after exiting Tottenham Court Road Tube Station - before heading up to floor 29 at Centrepoint..for another day.. Keep up the good work.
I watched this for the Sleeper train content so it was a great unexpected bonus to see you at The Dublin Castle. I'm from Inverness but lived in London when I was in my late teens - early twenties, The Dublin Castle is a great music venue and I played there many times back then. At that point the music scene around Camden was just so much fun. Great video, thanks.
I just found your channel and subscribed! I will be visiting London in April, and then traveling to Edinburgh before returning to the U.S. I was searching for a review of the trains that travel between the two and found you. Great review! Love the humor 😊
Another great trip report Steve, And the bonus London feature was very interesting too, well done. I always like your choice of Music, some really nice songs i've not heard before..😊
When I was working in Edinburgh and couldn’t sleep I used to walk around around the city and on many occasions found myself in Waverley station watching the trains arrive and departing, the amount of times I was tempted to hop on the sleeper and see if that would help me sleep but my head always ruled my heart and I trudged back to the hotel to lie and stare at the ceiling, great post brought back memories of Edinburgh
Thanks so much Steve. Your vlogs are always so diverse and interesting. I can sense that you’d like to spend more time at some of your destinations but most CZcams watchers probably have a 20 - 30 minute window for any given vlog. I know you’re a working man so you can’t devote the time at some of your destinations that you would like. We are all grateful for what you can show us. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much Norman! Really appreciate your words - yeah it can be tricky fitting everything in and it's sometimes so tough to only have a couple of hours in these amazing places!
I agree the pricing structure varies enormously, my son paid £400 return for a club room around Christmas. I'm going in mid March with a railcard in a classic room, a return is only £132 (£66 each way)
The Highland sleeper arrives around 1am when the station is closed. You traveled on the Lowland Sleeper where it merges with the train from Glasgow Central at Carstairs.
Love that Canadian toque Steve! Bonus points! You would have needed more than that on Jan 15 here on the island. Wicked snow storm. Couldn't see the railings on my back deck for so much snow. Shut everything down. 50 cm approximately of snow with 90 km/hr winds, so lots of drifting. Would much rather be where you are! What a great trip you had! Love learning new things about different parts of London. "Posh pigeon"....too funny! I remember those murals in a Geoff Marshall video! Thoroughly enjoyed exploring with you Steve! Great video!
Enjoyable video, Steve. Thanks. Have always wanted to make the trip myself to find out what it’s like. I have now booked Euston to Edinburgh for November in a Club Room. Can’t wait. Thanks for the glimpse of what to expect 👍.
@@steve-marsh Thanks for your tip Steve. I was thinking the same myself. Don’t worry if you can’t reply again but was wondering if the club dining car is open for a drink and something to eat from boarding or only after the train departs? Quite fancy spending a bit of time in there before bed.
I love sleeper trains. Only issue in the UK is that the journeys are short. Maybe the Cal' Express could loop around Yorkshire a few times then arrive in Euston about 11AM.
We comment Steve, the whole of Ireland was British back then1837, freestate came into being about 1922 or there abouts. We love your videos. Jimmy and David.
Hi Steve another great video reminded me when I worked in London 7 years ago a couple of guys I worked with got the Caley Sleeper I was a Easyjet traveller via LGW....
Haggis, neeps and tatties, we have them every Burn's night. We also find a poem or song to quote to get our supper. Lovely journey, Steve, thank you. Merry Ann from Minnesota
Great video Steve, thank you. I've long had a fascination with sleeper trains, yet have only ever managed to catch one in China. Great to see what they're like at home these days, perhaps one day...
You were right the first time about them drawing labourers from all four corners of the United Kingdom to build London Euston Station, since the station was built in the 1830s, well before Irish independence and while it was still part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
I've often thought I'd like a night in a sleeper, now I know I will but I get what you say about it not being long 3nough from Edinburgh to London so I guess it'll have to be the Orient Express for me 😁. Another great vlog Steve, thank you.
@@steve-marsh BA have changed my flight time I was due to arrive in Inverness in the afternoon but now I will be there at 10 am so hopefully I can find interesting things to do before my trip back Steve
That was the perfect opportunity for your kilt video 😉 I will do the sleeper one day but it means quite a bit of travelling to get to Euston and get off at either corrour or fort william.
The cabin is quite comfortable, good enough for a trip. I've never been to anything like this. So it's nice for me to find out how it is.Thank you for sharing😊
Great video Steve. I would like to see more videos done by you fair lady. You both do amazing videos n its great to see the whole of Edinburgh not just the postcard highlights. Keep up the good work both of you.
Might just take the overnight train next time I head back to Edinburgh. Heard you can have a cabin with a double bed. And yes I can recommend the Camden pubs. Thanks for another great video.
You took your sleeper, the same night I took mine. I did Inverness to Euston as it was a 12 hour journey so plenty of sleep time. I too was disappointed the top bunk was down even though I was single occupancy. The biggest disappointment for me was the Coffee offered was nescafe classic. Yak! Great video xXx
Yet another great video Steve although you never did let us in on the supply , or not ,of hot water in shower. Certainly it was pretty dear but in more comfort than flying. Anyway I suppose Alicja would enjoy the duty free's I'm sure you got her.
I enjoyed that wee visit to London Steve, good to know the story re the pubs, you never said if the shower had warm water . Thanks again from me in Irvine .😁😁
I just discovered you today and am a new subscriber. I’ve watched about ten of your videos already….I think you’re the only CZcamsr that actually makes me laugh out loud at times 😆 Thanks for the great videos!!
Done this in August from Edinburgh to Euston and back to next night. The berth are impressively roomy for 2 people and really comfortable compared to the old stock. Another brilliant video, cheers Steve!
Yes, it looked really cramped with not a lot of space between the berths and def not allowing for too much noise. I appreciate though your positive experience Steve. I did travel overnight a few times to Euston a few years back and the journeys were ok. I go by plane now and although it is quicker I still arrive bleary eyed. I love London, but early morning, sitting hunched over a coffee, it seems to me like any other place regardless of how I got there.
So true Thomas! I think I enjoy the thought of overnight trains more than the feeling of actually doing it, but a fun memory (without the tired feeling)!
Really great video Steve, I loved the sleeper when I used it a few years back, could never sleep so spent the night tracking the journey on GPS lol 9/10 my friend, (you know what (who) you need for 10, stay safe stay well, HNY.
We took the sleeper to Glasgow from London in June. My husband and I and are three teen daughters. We had three club rooms. Since we were in the UK for three weeks some of us had big bags that barely fit down the hall and lucky we had the third room with only one person so we could stow the bags on the bed. It was awkward having to wait til so late at the station since we had our bags with us. It was a nice ride and comfortable bed. But yes falling asleep around 12 and getting up at 6:30 for breakfast and arrival made for a short night. We were supposed to return from Edinburgh a few weeks later but the rail strike happened so they cancelled our train, we had to book the daytime 4 hour train instead.
Cheers for this Becky - wow that would have been an expensive trip with three rooms! Hey, in the coming weeks look out for my review of the seated experience onboard - I'm just back from that trip yesterday and it was an experience for sure! :D
I think I would be claustrophobic in those corridors! Not been to London for years. Used to go there for work, but no more! 😐 Another good video Steve. have yet to do the Inverness to the north runs. I usually drive but father-in-law wants to do it by train, so maybe this year! 👍
Love a train journey fella and even the spare room in my house I done a wall like the inside of a carriage, shall send you a pic of it. I watched one of Michael Portillo's shows before Xmas and he was in Barrhead. Thanks again Steve
Great vid Steve, the pubs and mosaics were fantastic little historical nuggets, I'll give this trip the other way round a go, I can get train at Crewe.
Brilliant vlog Steve. The last time I saw Waverley that quiet was when I was stationed at H.Q. Scotland in Craigiehall in the early 80s. Serving in the Royal Corps of Signals, a big job for us was providing P. A. equipment for the Tattoo every year. That was before it was contacted out to civilian companies. The last show finished just before midnight and I'd rush to Waverley to catch the last train to North Yorkshire. Every weekend I'd fail to make it and had to spend the night in the station. Not a nice experience in those days.
@@mynameisGail we've got some stories to tell. I wouldn't like to experience my stay in Waverley again, now that I'm older. In your case, it goes to prove that not all squaddies are trouble.
@@mynameisGail Would love to here them Gail. Funny enough, two and a half years stationed in Edinburgh and I never once had a night out in Edinburgh. Went to the Cramond Brigg Hotel a few times but that was it. We did have a few wild nights in the Squadron bar tho, but you don't want to hear about that, trust me. 🤣
I have used this sleeper quite a few times. But I used to travel from Thurso down to Inverness and catch the sleeper to London there. When I travelled the trains used to sound like this: diddlidee-diddlida-diddlidee-diddlida-diddlidum-diddlidoodle-diddlidee etc. etc. anyone remember that?
Great video Steve 👍 Although ive never done it, Ive always felt that an overnight trip on a train has a bit of mystique about it 😀 BTW I am partial to a bit of Brutalist architecture myself 😉
"I've got a wine in me"
"Then for some reason I decided to measure the room" lol that makes sense 🤣

Loved that Steve, hope your good for the year ahead, you're now a regular for my wife and I on a Sunday night 😎😁
Thanks so much Douglas and good lady! Aw the best to you both too :)
An interesting bonus video... lovely as usual.👍🙂
All I will say is "Scotsman rocks up early morning and heads straight for the pub!" 🤔😉😅
...and like I said, had it been open, you know where I would have been ;)
Another great vid, Steve! I appreciate your choice of music and your song lists. I’ve been able to find them all on Apple Music. Cheers!
That was the perfect opportunity for your kilt video 😉
I will do the sleeper one day but it means quite a bit of travelling to get to Euston and get off at either corrour or fort william.
Haha yes! I really need to buy that kilt soon :)
The cabin is quite comfortable, good enough for a trip. I've never been to anything like this. So it's nice for me to find out how it is.Thank you for sharing😊
Thanks Xana! It's fun but just not long enough in that comfy bed!
Great video Steve. I would like to see more videos done by you fair lady. You both do amazing videos n its great to see the whole of Edinburgh not just the postcard highlights. Keep up the good work both of you.
Thanks so much John, can't wait to have Alicja back sharing the screen as well :)
Might just take the overnight train next time I head back to Edinburgh. Heard you can have a cabin with a double bed. And yes I can recommend the Camden pubs.
Thanks for another great video.
Ahhh I wish I'd had time to sample them :) Yeah the double bed cabin - £345 ONE WAY!!! :O
@@steve-marsh D'oh! Did not look at the price.
Really enjoyed my first video of your journey on the sleeper.
Very good vid, Steve, from a train-loving Canuck. PS- great toque you were wearing!
Haha cheers!
No way!!! Cool :) (but not cool is the Nescafe!)
Dont see you without a hat often, wondered who you were! Great video as always, thanks Steve
Haha cheers David :)
Yet another great video Steve although you never did let us in on the supply , or not ,of hot water in shower.
Certainly it was pretty dear but in more comfort than flying.
Anyway I suppose Alicja would enjoy the duty free's I'm sure you got her.
Shhhhhhh! :) Oh, and let's just say the shower was 'refreshing'
I enjoyed that wee visit to London Steve, good to know the story re the pubs, you never said if the shower had warm water .
Thanks again from me in Irvine .😁😁
Good point Grace! Let's just say 'refreshing' :)
Thanks again Steve really enjoy all ure videos keep up the good work cheers.🍺🍺
Thanks to you Derek! :)
Took the Sleeper from Arbroath down to KingsX. Loved waking up and feeling refreshed
Glad you enjoyed it Chris - you must've had a better sleep than me :)
I just discovered you today and am a new subscriber. I’ve watched about ten of your videos already….I think you’re the only CZcamsr that actually makes me laugh out loud at times 😆 Thanks for the great videos!!
Glad to hear it Beth and welcome aboard! 🙃 thanks so much for watching and for your comment, aw the best!
super vlog, im using the sleeper in a week or so from edinburgh, going to see the titanic exhibition in London, thanks for posting mate.
Hope it's useful! Cheers :)
Done this in August from Edinburgh to Euston and back to next night. The berth are impressively roomy for 2 people and really comfortable compared to the old stock. Another brilliant video, cheers Steve!
Nice! Glad you got the return, I'd have loved that :)
I have lived I both London and Edinburgh and have Scottish heritage; I had no idea about those sights in London. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Simon!
I think I enjoy the thought of overnight trains more than the feeling of actually doing it, but a fun memory (without the tired feeling)!
this video is amazing i remember saying ages ago you should go on this train its amazing keep up the good work 😁
Cheers Ethan! A fun wee adventure :)
Really great video Steve, I loved the sleeper when I used it a few years back, could never sleep so spent the night tracking the journey on GPS lol 9/10 my friend, (you know what (who) you need for 10, stay safe stay well, HNY.
Haha cheers John - imagine trying to film it with 2 of us in that cabin! :D
Another great journey and so enjoyable as usual, thank you so much and stay safe and well.
And you Simon! Cheers!
Thanks. Keen to do that journey.
Well worthwhile Andrew, sometimes it's nice to take the slow route :)
Nice one Steve, always interesting, keep em coming, all the best
"Welcome to Edinburgh". Such inviting words.
Thank you so much for sharing.I like hanging around.😀
Great to have your company :)
Glad to hear you are also a fan of Brutalist architecture! Video idea, get a map of London brutalist buildings and do a wee concrete tour.
Would be a great idea, I'd be well up for that!
as a Canadian, and a hockey fan, gotta love the toque!
Love the Hockey Touque..Canadian Fan...Steve luv your holiday getaways...with love from Toronto
I think I would be claustrophobic in those corridors! Not been to London for years. Used to go there for work, but no more! 😐
Another good video Steve. have yet to do the Inverness to the north runs. I usually drive but father-in-law wants to do it by train, so maybe this year! 👍
Cheers Bob! Enjoy the train if you get the chance :)
Love a train journey fella and even the spare room in my house I done a wall like the inside of a carriage, shall send you a pic of it.
I watched one of Michael Portillo's shows before Xmas and he was in Barrhead.
Thanks again Steve
Loved the pics! Great work!
As a Canadian, I love seeing you in your Canada hat, well done.
I'm addicted to your travels Steve. I don't get out much! 😂 👍
Great vid Steve, the pubs and mosaics were fantastic little historical nuggets, I'll give this trip the other way round a go, I can get train at Crewe.
Cheers Michael! Wish I could've done the return, and the other way you get an extra hour onboard as well!
Wow David can't believe that experience every weekend :D
@@mynameisGail we've got some stories to tell. I wouldn't like to experience my stay in Waverley again, now that I'm older. In your case, it goes to prove that not all squaddies are trouble.
@@mynameisGail Would love to here them Gail. Funny enough, two and a half years stationed in Edinburgh and I never once had a night out in Edinburgh. Went to the Cramond Brigg Hotel a few times but that was it. We did have a few wild nights in the Squadron bar tho, but you don't want to hear about that, trust me. 🤣
Love the toque (hat). I would love to go on this train. I liked the murals.
Cheers Cheryl :)
Cheers David! And those flats at Barbican - wow what I'd do for one of those!
