"So this is the basic setup we have" while filming an SD8. Oh, the irony :)
Hahaha yes, I can see what you mean by this 😅
loved this! joining the Brilliance as a sound tech in a couple of months, I hope you guys left all the cables wrapped nice and tidy
Great to see behind the scenes of a cruise ship performance and all the different departments!
Thanks Matt, glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Dream Job! Thanks for sharing!
When I saw you with that headset on I was so relieved to see they let you take it off for the show. So many times I have heard bad mixes in theatre then looked back to see the engineer with one ear covered, and thought, that explains that! Anyway thanks for sharing!
Well maybe the setup is not calibrated and that causes problems. Many times the sound engineer can't change important configurations, they just try to mix the best they can. But if the hall has acoustic issues... few people know how to actually solve them
@@casiopea1107 Nah, I'm gonna go ahead and say it's because they have a headset on. It's akin to driving with one eye covered.
My first ship ❤ So awesome to see the upgrades in the theatre.
Hi Christine. I'm applying for Lighting Technician and this kind of daily life video is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much
welcome! if you have any questions shoot them over, im currently on explorer of the seas!
Hi Dean, I'm one of the candidates of the Lounge technician post for royal carribean.
What kind consoles do they use and what are some of the daily tasks
@@geealarab day to day running of venues depending on the ship is how many you have, consoles vary between ships, but don’t expect high end big consoles, one of the things you will do is the pool deck with a band. It’s fairly simple!
@@deanwarham6641 Deano Bambino, much appreciated man!!! One last question for the day. Is vaccination COMPULSORY?????
two years looking for this kind of information thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great video very informative I'm a self taught sound technician but find I never stop learning. Should do a video of the sound setup
Really interesting.
As a musician, I admire the way sound people are invariably the most calm, collected, and Zen people on the planet, while musicians are the most neurotic, grating, and annoying.
Was looking at musician videos to see whether I’d be able to do the job and yours came up in the feed. It gave me some extra insights from a different angle. Thanks.
Love this! Thanks for sharing!
Informative and worth the watch...so, thank you for that! I am interviewing for an Audio Technician spot on NCL (which would be my first contract, in fact, the only other ship I have been on was a large gambling cruise ;-) ). Regardless for my lack of "sea legs", my resume got me noticed. I do have some concerns which, before I agree to terms, would likely address, however for now, I will continue with my "shipboard research". TY again, Christine! Enjoy your day!
This is awesome! My school only has a Yamaha CL5 and only a 4 speaker line array. But our sound engineer/designer wants to get a new setup. Everything we use is so old and outdated. (Except for the light board...)
All your videos were super super interesting mam...you bring a chill and positive vibe..keep doing what you do and thanks for sharing your life with us..
I drummed on the brilliance for a few years. Fun to see it's still looking great. Hated the set up for centre stage though lol
Thank you for this Christine! I always wondered about applying for jobs like these because I'd never gotten a chance to observe the position, or understand it from a first person POV. All the best to you and your team!
Also do you have an A2, or is it just you?
Cool Thanks for the Vid Audio Fella
This is super amaizing ❤ I am on a process of applying such jobs this is so so interesting....
really interesting video. I run sound for a local theatre, but it's nice to do something different :)
Omg finally i need this before getting onboard
Thanks for the video, very interesting. A quick question. Did you learn your craft on this particular hardware/software? or is one digital desk pretty much the same as another?
Considering applying for this job. How much free time do you have, and how often are you able to disembark and see the sights when at port?
thanks!
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful! Im in the middle of the hiring process with Royal Caribbean! I've applied for a lounge technician role, but I'm sure that i will be able to become a sound tech during the first contract! fingers crossed, hopefully i will get on ship by the end of summer :)
Good luck! Your welcome to give me a shout if you need any help!
I hope this video helped in some way. I’ve got some more videos about the entertainment side of things on the way 😊
I received my offer letter last night! Super excited now and can't wait to get on board!
@@Mapukoc where you heading?
@@deanwarham6641 Navigator of the Seas, but i will have to wait till february 2024. tbh I thought it will happen a bit faster...anyway im quite happy with this offer )
Hi! I was wondering what’s the minimum age you can be to get hired as a sound technician?
Can you advice on how to get such jobs...i am based in South Africa
I’ve been a sound tech for a couple years but haven’t used that deck before is that the only brand Royal uses in the theatres?
Hey Michael, any big venues will mainly use DigiCo’s. That was the SD8 but there are newer ones on newer ships. Some of the older ships and smaller venues have Yamaha’s (LS9) or Mackies. But I think fleet wide you’re mainly going to be working with DigiCo.
How much we can expect on a entry level
Great video. May I ask what position is below sound technician and above it? (I guess there's a head sound technician or chief engineer). Thanks!!
Yes. There is a Head Sound and Light Technician. A step below this is a lounge technician. After that it depends on what venue you are in.
@@christinecaldbeck thanks !!!
Do you work alongside a lighting designer? I’m thinking about that career someday
Yes I do. The theatre has a sound and light tech assigned to it. The lounge tech covers sound and light in the smaller venues and we help out where we can
How do you even get a job as an audio engineer on a cruise ship? Ive been doing live sound for 30 years, and I never thought of looking into an option like this.
as someone who also has 30 years experience... I wonder the same thing, I've applied at multiple places online without any reply, which is foolish.... cause like wtf wouldn't they want someone with 30 years experience !?
It was by pure chance being honest. I went to a school of music and I knew a lot of musicians going away working on cruises. I started sending my CV out to loads of company’s (allcruisejobs.com) and a recruitment company found me. It was pure luck. I didn’t even know I was interviewing for Royal Caribbean. I interviewed for stage staff and lunge tech and got sound tech cause they were desperately looking for people.
I had experience working with radio mics and this was a big factor in getting the sound tech gig
@@christinecaldbeck Thank you for your response :)
did you have experience?
Wonder if they’re still using my show files for centre stage 😄
Oh I’d say there are probably some aspects of the show files still in place.
Im hoping to be a cruise ship musician but i was wondering if you know what the downtime is like if youre a singer and what the schedule is? Also, is it possible to get hired if you have mild disabilities?
I’m unsure about the hiring process for musicians/singers as they normally have a recruiter. As a person employed directly by the company you have to pass a medical.
On our ship the lounge singers/musicians had one day with no performances a week. Then six days with 3, 45 minute sets. But this all changed week by week
Causally had a lexicon 480l j chillin 😂 that’s wayyyy more than a basic setup
What was the gym like on the boat?
We have a crew gym as well as a guest gym. I’m making a video about the ship and I’m going to include both gyms in the tour
did you guys get training before doing the job?
I got a two week handover. That’s all the training I did in regards to sound.
I'm curious to know about pay. Cruise ship sound tech jobs postings don't include the pay scale. My boyfriend is a theater sound tech and we are curious to know if it makes financial sense to apply for a cruise ship job. Thanks!
It all depends on a lot of factors. A big one would be which country you are from. Since this is an American company, the american crew members have to pay tax. However most other countries do not require you to pay tax on your pay while at sea
Thanks! We are from the US. I’ve done some more reading and it looks like take-home pay may be $30k or so.
😎😎✨✨🎶🎶
That was 14/15 work day?
From start to finish yes, However, there are plenty of down time in between. I probably worked about 9 hours that day
@christinecaldbeck 9 hours it's a lot or few ? Compare with other days?
God I couldn’t imagine if I hadn’t found a good paying house gig in my hometown and I had to stick myself on a boat to work. 😂
Hello christine my name Yonatan i'm from Ethiopia i want to know and work on cruise ship sound technicians
Can you help me ?
You just apply thorough the official site of ROYAL caribbean career or other cruise line
