Opinionated Voyager Episode Guide follows three con artists who are ruining the reputation of Voyager. The science fiction part is that they still have a reputation that can be ruined.
It's so common for Starfleet to face world-ending threats that seeing a crew deal with conmen is refreshing. Small threats make the show feel grounded.
That's a huge problem with the entire entertainment industry now. It always needs to be the end of the world. There's seemingly no room for small scale stories anymore.
Weapons fire! All right, remember your training: step out from behind any cover while still drawing your own weapon, then present yourself as the most predictable and largest target possible. Go!
It really is a pity that early Voyager didn't lean into the idea mentioned here of Neelix initially conning the crew and gradually being convinced of their way of doing things. It wouldn't have completely saved him from his obnoxious characterization (and the jealousy with Kes was always going to be an albatross with how he was presented) but it would have at least been an element that made his presence slightly more interesting.
The jealousy angle _might_ have worked if they had shown Neelix more internally hurt and insecure (maybe we learn it's actually _his_ first relationship too, another sign of him conning), but instead every time it came up he flew into an angry vengeful rampage.
The fact that Kes was a literal 2 year old didn’t help matters at all. Yes yes Ocampa are sexually mature after a few months. The point is still she still has vastly, VASTLY.less experience than him and him being so jealous and possessive comes across as creepy and taking advantage of her naivete. The fact that she immediately dumps him after experiencing events that emotionally mature her pretty much lines up with that too.
_Voyager_ is basically the USS _William D. Porter,_ a destroyer that served in the US Navy during WW2. Here's a quick run-down of the _Porter's_ chequered service record: 1) - Sheared off part of her sister destroyer while leaving the dock 2) - Had a depth charge roll off the deck into the sea and blow up, making all the other ships in her group think they were under attack 3) - Fired a live torpedo at President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard USS _Iowa_ 4) - Sent the wrong signal instead of a warning signal to the _Iowa_ during said torpedo attack
-We are expected to be used to the ship's security being that lax? That's scary! And it works? That is unbelievable! Actually, that reminds me of when Worf joined DS9 and then complained that the station had awful security. Which caused Odo to recite many, various stardates and instances of when Enterprise's security was broken - and they were minor incidences that were mentioned. Odo earned the smug look on his face following that recitation. -Your description of Neelix's cooking reminds me of why I don't cook very often. I'm pretty sure that if I mixed sugar and tepid water together, my kitchen would explode, too. Also, I'm pretty sure I would burn water!
I guess we should be "glad" that when she stole the phaser from Nelix that she didn't push it to vaporize. Or just be like Jake Sisco and just wave the phaser around maximizing the chances of hitting something.
I don't remember an episode where Jake had a phaser but it's not surprising if a teenager panics while being stuck in a situation where he has to use a weapon.
@@noblehelium3794 It was the episode which he Jake was on a planet during the Klingon War, with Dr. Bashire. Near the end when Klingons were attacking him, he grabbed a phaser and blindly started shooting it wildly. Causing a cave in, saving everyone's lives.
The only ST show where this kind of identity theft works since they don't have a real Federation to compare to. So Dala and friends aren't just destroying Voyager's rep, but the Federation's too. Could have gone a bit further with Neelix here, maybe making his prior skills at conning the key to outsmarting Dala, but as you said it's hard to attribute any kind of wit to the character by now. Maybe earlier in the show.
But don´t you see...all these years of incompetence to the 'wear your underpants on your head' level was just a cunning plan. The conmen had easy access to all of Voyagers files, including all the 100% real reports about bad security. That made the escape look real in universe...the writers are true masters of their kind to torture us like this to give us one good scene in years...I marvel in their...thing...you know the thing...I´m off for bed.
The comments about the speed of downloading the database reminds me of what always bugged be about the Doctor's mobile emitter. If it were just that I'd be fine. It's an emitter connected to the ship's computer and databases. Think of it as long distance bluetooth device. However, it's portrayed as downloading all the software and data and somehow erasing the originals from the ship. I've always wondered if they were unable to access medical data when the mobile emitter was off ship because the Doctor seemed to have it all.
@@trazyntheinfinite9895 Well that backup only appeared in that episode and never before. Would have come in handy multiple times, like when they sent his program to the Prometheus - because data cannot be copied, at least not in the 24th century. So sad we only have primitive computers and can actually copy things. Or run multiple instances of one program ... But my in-universe explanation about the backup is that the crew just never knew there was one - this is the VOY-crew we are speaking about, so this kind of incompetence isn't too hard to believe.
Do we really know Tuvok is lying with the whole prison story? I mean this is Crazy Jane after all - impersonating her sounds like something that deserves life sentence in the worst prison of the Delta Quadrant from her perspective ... The imposters can be thankful Janeway didn't fly all the way back to the prison from The Chute.
These were the original production numbers for the show. When they started TNG it was 101, 102..., when they started DS9 is was 401, 402... because it was TNG's fourth season, when they started Voyager it was 801, 802... for the eighth season after the start of TNG.
Too easy to get the database, what about password and biometric check? and all devices in the universe are compatible. another reason to implement proprietary security programs.... 🤔 I guess their WiFi hasn't a password either. They can detect neutrinos at thousands of km tho.. 🤔 Whatever. But they can't do the "unauthorized access attempt" stuff
I love that STD had a breath scanner-check in one episode ... Starfleet security is run by idiots. Or Earth just lost any information about decent security during WW3 ...
VOY was so by-design derivative and mediocre, it's not surprising that in the rare cases where they were acknowledging their shortcomings, they tended to do well. By their standards.

Really love how Fake Tuvok is that
committed to his role. That is truly
method acting in action .
I especially like that his behaviour starts to annoy his comrades. They also think he goes way too far with his acting.
Faux Janeway can be identified by her severe lack of Malice and Coffee

0:41 - Love the Spaceballs reference.
I never realized how the combadges were bigger
It seems to me that the newer com badges in Picard are bigger, too.
Id like to think some of the writers were trolling in the latter Voyager years in poking fun at the show, between this, Muse and Shattered.

Alas, this is Voyager, where good ideas and potential go to die.

But did they also have a Neelix on board? I don't think so - so Voyagers stupidity wins!
One of my favorite episodes of Voyager.

Maybe they were smart enough to disable lethal settings.
😆Nah, this is Voyager. They didn't!

@@toddfraser3353: "The Siege of AR-558"?
Most humorous laugh line: Voyager security.
The inside joke about Mulgrew's hair is pretty hilarious.
The prop at 2:58? It was also used in an episode of DS9. I forget which.
Wickedly Awesome Commentary 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Speaking of self parody: Neelix gets shot by a phaser at point blank range, about one foot from his heart, but is perfectly fine.
Voyager teached us that phasers are pretty weak anyway ... and then came ENT and showed us how weak machine pistols are (Terra Nova).

Yes but the defiant bridge as daalas ship was funnny too.

Too bad we didn't get a knock-off con artist take on Seven of Nine.
A good episode. :)
Just look at fake Tuvok, LARPing his little heart out.

There was ine episode that revealed the doctor hadxa complete backup too.... living witness

I assume that Janeway boiled one of them to their bones and turned in 1.5 of the others to the local authorities.
what do these episode codes mean? it makes no sense for either position in season or amount of trek episodes
The episode reviewed?
I have difficulty fathoming the production code numbers as well. It's all so very weirdly done.
