- 朝の通勤時間に東京メトロ東西線の葛西駅で撮影した毎日満員電車です。日本に新しく来た留学生として、それが普通だと、僕らの毎日経験になると驚きました。
Video footage of our daily commute to university (on Tōzai Line leaving from Kasai station) during a typical weekday morning rush-hour in 2001/2002. As newly arrived exchange students we didn't know yet that this would become our regular routine for one year.
Trains and platforms are longer than in other countries and another train will arrive within the next one or two minutes. There is station staff with white gloves that will politely stuff you onto the train if you are in a hurry and can't wait for the next train. It wouldn't be so much of an issue, if there weren't just too many people wanting to take a train all at the same time. And the situation is similar at the next stations where more people are boarding to go to central Tokyo.
Kasai station actually does not belong to the most crowded stations (when I uploaded this video, it ranked as 35th most used station operated by the "Tokyo Metro" Corporation with an avg. of 96,000 customers per day). But (according to 2009 figures), Tōzai Line is the most crowded subway line in Tokyo (sometimes running at 199% of its capacity). [Source: tinyurl.com/6d8... and tinyurl.com/699...]

What's their to laugh? It's something that visitors wouldn't understand. You gotta live in Tokyo to understand the value of one minute. One minute may sometime cost one's life.

They seem accustom to this situation, no one upset from being pushed or packed in the train. They are polite and wait until all passenger in the train get off first, even in the rush hour. Search "Beijing subway line" you will see horrible thing.

日比谷線03系にも営団車外ブザー搭載されてました、東武線内はメロディ導入する前、始発駅以外は笛オンリーだったので営団車外ブザーを東武線内で当たり前の様に聞いてました
この頃行徳に住んでて毎日朝これでうんざりしてました。これが嫌で船橋に引越ししました。

混雑格率が日本一の
客が集まってるそうです

10年前の映像でも画質のせいでだいぶ古く見えちゃうな

Dear uploader of this footage, do not try to make a "something bizarre world museum" out of Japanese people's unavoidable agony. They have to commute at around the same timing in the morning. more than 10 million people have to do so in the Greater Tokyo area, the number of commuting people in Japan is much larger than your country's population, I guess. Is it so much of a fun to film and upload this?

I think that is the some culture in japan. in most other country we can afford to wait few minutes for next train that will come every 2-3 minutes anyway in tokyo but working in japan you cant afford to be late even 1 minute.

葛西に住んでた頃、自分は秋葉行きのバスに乗り、遠回りして出社してました。

+Majtzy The trains come by every 1-2 minutes in Tokyo, especially during rush hour. I don't know how you could possibly add any more trains without creating a collision.
well... but why don't they then try to be earlier at the station... if I have to be there at 9 AM and it's 9 AM, not 9:01 AM, I would try to plan my way to be there at 8:45 AM already to have 15 minutes space
