Today, we sit down with Matt Workman of Cinematography Database to play Cine Tracer, a revolutionary pre-visualization and virtual set tool, and discuss the future of filmmaking.
Is it possible to visualize your live action film inside of a video game? Using the Unreal Engine 4, Cine Tracer is a visualization tool for filmmakers, that can help them storyboard a film, design sets, and create lighting diagrams all inside a cinematic and realistic video game engine.
In this demo we learn the basics of Cine Tracer, from building sets, to creating cinematic lighting setups using real world lighting tools in Unreal Engine 4. Check out the video for our full impressions!

#Cinegame #CineTracer #Previz
Thanks for watching us stumble through our let's play, I'm sure you guys will pick it up much faster! What would you design or previz in Cine Tracer?
I'd take shots of every location I was thinking about shooting in. Then I'd recreate the sets in Cine Tracer, complete with the lighting coming in windows and from practicals. Then I'd place the talent in their locations and start adding lights until I got the framing and look I wanted. Dump it to storyboards and lighting diagrams, and then walk into the location ready to go. Absolutely mind-blowing previz tool!
Too bad I only have an i5 CPU and an GTX 1060. Gotta save up pretty much for a whole new system. It'll hurt to trash the 32GB of DDR3 memory I have. But I think it will be worth it.
Thanks Ted and team Indy Mogul for coming to Boston!
Thanks for having us Matt! And thanks for putting up with my truck centipede film :D
So this is what you've been doing!
I hadn't seen your videos in my feed for a while.
Will you be adding the feature of having a car on its sides? Right now i can just rotate it around
Pre-viz is literally my job! Glad to see people out there appreciating the time and effort we put in to scenes for the sake of our directors, especially considering very little of what we produce is seen by the larger audience...
Man this video is missing potato jet so we can finally get the asian filmmaker twist of the avengers
And the other asian sony guy jason
@@YoungBlaze we release our K-Pop debut next month. stay tuned
Not only is it great to see stuff from Indy Mogul, but Ted is just amazing, these episodes are just amazing. All around good stuff!!!!
I agree. This helps wean off the other sites that use $10,000 cameras and software that you need a year to practice to seem passable. While I think it will never (hopefully) return to $25 prop builds, it's nice to see the channel educate (without "educating") and get people to think out of the box. You CAN make a movie and you CAN make it look good and you CAN make it cheap... but it requires hard work and creativity. It's nice to see that Ted is that kind of person. Kind of like a Mister Rogers for no-budget movie making.
@@JRHermle No-Budget Mr. Rogers may just be the best nickname I've ever heard
So it's Gmod for camera people?
I'm terrible at drawing and don't really have the patience for it, so drawing panel storyboards for what I want to film has always been a frustrating process. I'm awful at lining up the dimensions with a horizon and all that with a pencil, yet I want to shoot from any and all angles. I always wished there was a way to plan out exact panning and dolly shots (as still images don't really do it) as well as just keep objects consistently realistic in shape. This seems to be that! I'm very interested.
^ this. This is EXACTLY how I am too.
Impressed. The community. The Quality. And ultimately the visualisation of planning ahead and exploring with minimal cost.
What Matt is producing is absolutely amazing and it's so cool to see you all collab! :D Keep it up Ted and everyone else on Indy Mogul!
thanks for tuning in man!
I really like this "Filmmaker's GMod", especially with how the lighting is properly shown.
Out of all the film related CZcams channels out there, by far Indy Mogul has influenced me the most. Indy Mogul is the channel that inspired me to creat my own. My first video will be coming out some time this week. I would appreciate it if you’d take a look. Peace.
It's neat. If you want a cheaper way to play around with a similar process, play around with the "Camera Mode" in your favorite video games. A lot of games have them these days. If you have Grand Theft Auto 5 you have access to some half decent filmmaking tools when you incorporate basic mods like an ingame trainer. I personally used Assetto Corsa, a sim-racing game on PC to recreate McLaren's "Under 7 Minutes" video, promoting the McLaren P1 hypercar, by modifying some in-game camera files and using a screen cap program.
A director and DP’s dream tool. What a great time to be a filmmaker.
I've always said pre-production is where MOST of the work should go. This will make production easier, and post-production (theoretically) even easier.
Yay! Mac versions finally out! Thanks Matt! You sir, are a legend!!!
Thanks Ted. I'm an old fossil making How to videos on CZcams, and this incredible Cine Tracer software would probably be lost on me. My daughter is a Cinema Major at Dension University in Ohio though, and I think this might prove quite useful for her. I've just shared your video and link to Cine Tracer with her. Thanks again.
This is going to change the future of Films! Wow, takes so much of the guesswork out of the equation!! Not only will this save on big budgets but it could also be used to sell a film project by using the toll as a sales pitch to executives to show a scene almost exactly. Nice to see what Matt's been up too! Thx for sharing Ted
thanks for always tuning in Richard! Appreciate the support
Just bought cine tracer for Mac. I can’t wait to use it for my Cinematography work !!
Thanks for doing this live with Matt.
When are we gonna get some of that sweet Indy Mogul merch. I need that sweatshirt. Need.
YEAH!,
btw yeah that was LOUD.
I want my Indy Moguloody.
Onegaishimasu.
I know dat guy. Been watch you two awhile.
Need to get back to CineTracer.
Will starting working on it now! I just printed a couple of these with my merch buddy.
INDY MOGULOODY! Daisuke.
Very cool, ive been watchin Matt's work, and it's really impressive. This will make the process of learning, much easier and faster.
You hear music from Artlist everywhere. Artlist and Epidemic Sound are killing it!
I guess this will be very useful if one has a virtual tour of a location ahead of filming
Cine Tracer reminds me of Source Film Maker from Valve from several years ago.
Matt's a cool dude..glad to see his creation has morphed into a user-friendly pre-vis tool!
I'm already using this and I love it! It's been very instrumental in working out the shot of my next film. I highly recommend it!
Awesome Matt and thank you Ted !
This is the future of cinematography. Great work!
i love this child like fascination of people using a 3d programm the first time
Matt Workman is the bomb.
boom
This is amazing! Getting this software as we speak!
The initial plan might have been to simulate scenes, but it could evolve to be a full-stack animator. Replacing maya etc...
Loved this one. It's actually pretty interesting watching Matt build CineTracer on twitch.
Matt is the kind of guy that is just a lot of fun to hang out with
Very educational video! You have my like
Dude that’s dope, could be a really useful tool to understand lighting.
that was incredible
Very interesting video! I'm a film student at the moment and have some previous Cinema4D knowledge but this looks like a very intuitive UI. I think you definitely sold me on Cine Tracer
I love Matt workman's channel
It's good to see Mike Seymour on your channel. :D
Super dope video! Keep up the great work Indy Mogul! You guys rock!
Woah this is amazing. It would've saved me so much time and logistics on my last project if I had this
As someone who is beginning to train to be a storyboard artist this has me both wowed and nervous.
Totally cool!
Love this one. I'll be picking up my copy of CT ;)
OMG... This is amazing! I need this game. Thank you for sharing.
This would greatly help filmmaking using film
I'm gonna buy it, thx for the video and for the program !
This is exciting. Is there a demo version of Cine Tracer to play with?
not that I know of! maybe we can release our full playthrough later on though
$90 seems like a lot for an early access, if it ever goes half off ill think about it, but it does seem like a very helpful tool.
Director here, I need this in our workflow ASAP.
Yeeeeeahhhh, Cinematography Database!!!
First!
Edit: Ok, that was pretty damn cool. Solid!
These are legit soooo good. Thanks so much Ted for refreshing indymogul
de nada, thanks for tuning in!
I enjoyed watching your video! Thanks for sharing!
Omg this is so crazy! lol I was going to say it would be really cool if they had premade locations of popular places and then they mentioned it :o can't get much better than that
And it's only 90 dollars!
Was skeptical, but dang, that looks neat. 👍
This came out so great!!
This program is great for storyboarding your film without drawing!
Omg I need this! Thank you
I love it! Its Gmod for film making
Ted = swag!
What about FrameForge 3D? That has been around longer and has many plug ins and seems easier.
This was wonderful!
this is freaking awesome!
FYI, the man who has been modelled (head and shoulders) is Mike Seymour.
but is he available this Friday night?
I’m intrigued
You guys are really on top of your shit. I was going to download this simulator today haha
it's totally worth it. I was skeptical at first, but it's legitimately amazing
Buying this
There should be a version where your inventory starts empty and you buid it up with every gig you get. Like an actual game u know? just for fun
Take my money!
Getting the graphics in the game.
Sony has the 3d scanning functionality which is quite a gimmick on the phone but for applications like this, getting textures, faces etc in... Cheap as F and even easier to create.
Thx! Cool stuff.
must buy
On the next cheap vs expensive can you try LED light bulbs (Amazon/home improvement/ harbor freight/etc) vs LED video lights
Is there any way to overlay this program over photos or video that the gamer creates, his or her selves?
Freaking awesome!
pretty dope
I want to see more of Thin Air, the girl superhero 🦸♀️ that you made years ago. Please give us more thin air.
that model is mike seymour from fxguide!
Glad someone else noticed this.
@@mrmattwilson90 but do either of you know if he wants to get dinner sometime?
Indie Mogul made their first let's play gaming video lol
I wish I could do blocking in there!
intresting
Can you print out a schematic or a floor plan of your design in CT?
how can i subscribe for the c4d plugin? website gives me a 404 error :/
I recommend COOPER FILMS
MATT IS AN EVIL GENIUS
finally.
yo, I just got done with a live stream with the FXHOME team ( the creators of the free video editing software "Hitfilm" and they'd love to collab with y'all.
3:30 chose color?
I wouldn't get to comfortable with the idea that AI/"Robots" wont be taking anyone's job in the film industry. There will be MANY jobs an AI will be able to do MUCH cheaper and with the same level of expertise as a skilled veteran. The ones that wont have to worry will be the ones who are truly innovative and creative. Anything that is taught in schools can be taught to an AI. Just saying.
Everyone has no idea how completely AI will replace us in the near future. Capitalism is just straight up not gonna work in 15-20 years at this rate. Gonna be hardly any jobs not automated.
While that may be tru to some eXtent. Do get to comfy with that idea i think. Just saying. Witj innovations that keep popping like this. Ai (when they become standard) will still be relegated to probably standard gruntwork like any newbie would im guessing. they can do but not guess. its an artistic intuit not, this is common or popular so make it a weighted template idea.
Nyazilla Gojira you are mistaking AI with machine learning. Both are very different. Machine learning simply repeats a process. AI CAN predict possible outcomes and “think” (AlphaZero is a perfect example) of better ways to do things. So the idea that AI will just be a mindless robot slave is a bit naïve to say the least.
DysnomiaFilms saying everyone will be out of a job would be stretching it, think back during the last tech revolutions, many jobs will be lost but many new ones will come from all of this.
@@dizzyaaron The last machine revolution overcame the need for everyone to be farming and allowed us to reach untapped markets that were previously impractical due to how many people were required for agriculture and basic industries. There is not an endless flow of these jobs. What happens when AI replaces engineers, what more human necessary field can they move into? First we will go into an economy where people are only corporate bosses, servicepeople and artists, and all the money will go to an extreme few unless our entire living structure is changed. And then what when machines can make more profitable movies than people, or more successfully negotiate a hostage situation? What place does humanity have in it's own world then? Very deeply concerning questions.
This needs to be a UE4 plugin.
9:03 ...that sound WTF??
Gmod 2 confirmed
I'm gonna be that guy but can you imagine if this was on the Nintendo Switch?
im lost for words right now.
I don't think this is scary. I think it's revolutionary and I think it can get your film funded depending on (?)
Who's is to say Adobe, Apple, Sony, Microsoft wont make their own version of this?
I wish I could have god-like powers and do this in real life!
It means permanently changing calling digitally video recording a thing to film making thus no longer using or educating humans with beautiful film.
future of digital nobody uses film
