Greece train crash protests turn violent as victims identified

  • Tuesday's head-on collision between a passenger train and a freight train in Greece was so catastrophic that many of the 57 people killed have had to be identified using their DNA.
    In the days since the accident, Greek train services have been at a standstill with rail workers in protest at what they say is the failure of successive governments to improve rail safety.
    And across the country thousands of people have joined angry demonstrations demanding accountability.

    A really important fact here is, the Greek government passed a union busting law where union strikes can be made illegal. Rail unions tried multiple times (in the past) to strike over safety, yet their strikes were "illegal" and were forced to work! Working conditions where 24hours are covered by two people on temporary (6month) contracts.
    My fellow Brits, support your unions! I am sure no rail worker can bear in their consciousness, loss of human life under their watch. Either because they were tired or made a mistake.

      Greece communist dominated unions and endless leftist riots carry a great deal of the responsibility for Greece's massive debt. Rather than focus on the private sector they turned Greece into a quasi-communist state . it took us getting broke to go back to focusing on the private sector.

      You are totally right I work for the ERU, for the railways and have seen a considerable decline in maintenance where train drivers are complaining about the condition of the track, our government want to put legislation to stop us striking, will the blood be on their hands when people die due to similar incident. Lack of funding and the lying media stating that we are striking because of pay and condition is a blatant lie. The axe will fall on the individual that didn’t do the maintenance and they will receive corporate manslaughter charges. We live in worrying times as neglect is causing these types of disasters. Transport minister Grant Shappes is an incompetent fool, worrying times for our railways in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

      Union strikes can and should in many case be made illegal. This is not right and sad, but many unions abuse their right to hold a strike. Working conditions were 3 people for 24h and 1 of them was on leave the other one just left earlier. The crime is no government actually cared for the rail network for over 20 years.

    As an ex-railwayman I do not understand how this accident happened. The usual systems in place on the railways in general should have made this crash impossible. I can only conclude those systems were not in place.

    • @eljeffe3120
      @eljeffe3120 Před rokem +72

      You would be correct. These systems were bought in as far back as 2000 but were never installed, and there were no automatic ones in place; everything was done manually, and even the stationmaster had no clue what was going on.

      @miburosaito Před rokem +39

      Thats exactly what happened
      A system was bought back in 2000s and has yet to be installed....
      Railway was depending on people making decisions based on old system, a situation that has led to numerous accidents so far - but not as deadly as this one...
      But most of all, i would say the 2 main reasons that system is not working are the 2010s debt crisis and certainly corruption in railways and in politics as well

    Get this: as mentioned in this video, the Greek government stated that they would form a committee to investigate the causes of the accident. And one of the three people they announced as a member used to be the head of OSE, the state-owned organization that used to run the trains and owned the network, the company that he himself led to ruin in order to justify its privatization, the man under whose watch most security systems that were previously operational just seized and remained that way up to this accident. They wanted to appoint him to investigate himself. That's how cynical, blatantly corrupt and completely oblivious towards our lives the Greek government is and that is why so many people end up protesting about a train accident. Plus, the newly appointed minister of transport is the guy who told us during the pandemic that it's no big deal that we do not have enough ICUs because that's where you go when you're dying.

      I'm still wondering where the 70 million euros the EU gave Greece to update their rail safety went.

    • @immatureradical
      @immatureradical Před rokem +4

      @@Buttercup697 This must be the total cost of the investment, but I guess it would take a full judicial inquiry to find out. I can tell you though that during this time of just wasting 70 millions, the whole organization running the trains was privatized for just 45 million - having separated the trains from the network, so the trains became a private company making profits and the network remained public, being run at a loss, understaffed and underfunded. And while everybody knew they were no safeguards, transportation by train was allowed to go on. In Greece there are less than a handful of construction companies that undertake almost all works under terms that always seem scandalous. Τheir most common pattern is that due to government corruption and creative incompetence, the agreements they sign are intentionally vague, allowing them to fail to keep their promises and still require more money. In this particular case, an agreement between Ellaktor and Alstom was signed in 2014 to get the European Train Control System working and this was supposed to be fulfilled in 2016. Then the companies were in conflict regarding their requirements and the terms of European funding, leading work to a halt. In 2018 this led to a supplementary agreement, increasing costs by 13 million, but the companies still didn't fulfill the terms of the agreement, so a new agreement led to work restarting in 2021, which failed to deliver the system in time to prevent the accident. Needless to say that during this time, work has been done only to be dismantled and changed. I can only imagine how many instances of incompatibilities and outdated solutions have come up. The government claim that around 70% of work is complete, but whatever that is supposed to mean, the practical result is that in a country where train transportation is effectively reduced to 500 km between the two largest cities, most of this route is being run without signaling, let alone collision warnings and breaking.

      It would be nice if we had better everything. Unfortunately, we are largely broke because large numbers of leftwing extremists in our country think they are entitled to the government perks of Swedes... but without producing like Swedes in the private sector. They constantly exploit tragedies and inefficiencies to justify more government spending... when we don't actually have the money to spend (thus our massive debt).
      Our left isn't like the moderate left in most western countries which embraces aspects of both capitalism and socialism The left in Greece is unfortunately closer to the ranting anti-capitalists of Cuba. Our main left party Syriza is run by a Marxist that praised 50-year communist dictator Castro and even shamelessly named his poor kid "Che" after communist terrorist Che Guevara.
      They act like wealth grows on government money trees rather than extracted from taxes from the private sector. If the private sector is not strong, there is no money to give money to services... thus you end up with situations like this..
      And our private sector can't get strong to gain the productivity advantages of economies of scale because every time there is little money our far left treat Greek company's income as their personal piggy banks.
      This video... showing violent Anarchists and Marxists that exploit these sorts of tragedies for political ends is a prime example of this extreme behaviour.

      It pains me to say this as a Greek, around half the Greek population are far-left extremists. Thus the first step to improving Greece is to change the mentality that the government is responsible for all of Greece's ills. Unless this parasitic mentality changes we will just repeat the same mistakes of spending government money. What we should be doing is using regulation in smart ways (i.e. that doesn't harm the private sector) to help the private sector fix things instead.

    You do realise the UK train system is dated as well. The trains we use now were originally developed in the 50s and people wonder what the point is in updating the system to HS2. What we really need is an entirely automated driverless system. Properly designed machines work every time.

    • @debbiehenri345
      @debbiehenri345 Před rokem

      A bit like the way we can rely on self-drive cars and lorries to not run into other vehicles on the road?
      Automation is still far from perfect, unfortunately. Glitches happen. Power goes down. I don't think I'd be too happy to be a passenger in a driverless vehicle.
      Besides, what do you do with all the train drivers and train managers you suddenly make unemployed?
      The official answer, of course, is to 'let' them retrain for something else, like it was some sort of 'gift.' Only it isn't.
      Those drivers often don't have any other skills than train driving. They may well include a lot of people who are middle aged or a few years from retirement.
      Who employs people of that age?
      I know the answer, since I am 'that' age, and no one wants to employ me because I no longer have the stamina for my old career as a gardener.
      Retraining isn't easy for someone my age. (Tried it). It's not like a gardener can be trained to be a doctor or a teacher. The alternative is to be counted among the millions who daily apply to work behind a till or in other dull, unskilled jobs. And the same will be true for a train driver. What possible job will train driving skills be good for - if not for driving a train?
      Presently, this world is obsessing with replacing humans with automation - and not providing a sensible alternative for the jobs that are gone forever.
      More and more people are finding that unless they have the faculties (or even the interest) to retrain during their middle age into a highly responsible job such as a haematologist, nurse, teacher, lawyer, bank manager - they are constantly at risk of being passed over for a kid who can run around filling supermarket shelves at twice the speed and understand brand new technology within seconds of being shown.
