There's definitely a problem with the amount of shellac or whatever binding they've used to make the gouache shiny! It's really not supposed to be. The arteza looks better there definitely - but I do know a downside to them as I've bought them in the past. Putting them in a palette for easier use caused them to MOLD - they don't put anti-molding agent in their mixture and my palette turned out rather disgusting.
Anyway great piece! And tips regarding brushes, a soft roundbrush should be fine in most cases as it has a lower chance of disturbing the paint underneath compared to a harder brush - so go for watercolor brushes!

  • @esilabet
    @esilabet Před rokem +10

hahah, the ones you chose for your test are the same price and quality... The artwork is awesome!
About gouache: Pro quality gouache is about 15-20$ per 15ml and they are available as individual tube. The price depends a lot of the pigments, lightfast or not.. etc. All colors are not the same price and there's a logic to that... pigments can come from brunt crap or from precious stones, so it shows in the price of a tube.
The thing with gouache is : it's watercolor+chalk. You truly only need 2 gouache colors, the whites : Titanium white for opaque or pastels and Zinc white to mix with watercolors of your choice.
You can buy some M graham white zinc and white titanium, then some watercolor with the colors of your choice individually, quality of your choice. I usually use M graham for the whites and holbein for the black, watercolors for the rest of the palette. A warm and cold version of each primary (lemon yellow, quin gold, aliz crimson, vermillion, F. Ultramarine, cerulian blue) and some earth tones (burnt siena, y. ocre, sepia) in watercolor + 3 tubes of gouache (titanium and zinc white + some black), and you got the whole color circle available with 12 tubes. With this material you have full control over hue, value AND transparency.
For the brushes.. again, it's watercolor, it depend on the techniques you do most... depends on your use of water actually. The more watery you make your paints, the better the brush needs to be at retaining and releasing evenly. A good mop for washes, some nice round brushes with a pointy tip. A rigger brush for lines and a couple flats and daggers for thicker application and dry brushing. You want soft brushes with some bounce. Watercolor brushes are insanly expensive if you get the good stuff. If you don't do large washes, then you don't really those natural hair super expensive 150$++ brushes. The mid-level watercolor brushes do just fine for gouache.
I hope that helps... have fun!

For your style, Arteza is definitely the winner. I'm not a fan of shiny areas in my paintings either.
I recommend synthetic brushes. Golden taklon brushes work really well with gouache because their bristles can handle the thicker medium without breaking or losing shape over time. Golden taklon also tolerates "rougher" cleaning that's sometimes needed to remove gouache, but they do stain a bit. It's good to have a few different shapes like round, flat, filbert, liner/rigger and each of those in a couple different sizes. But hey, from what I've watched, you can make any shape or size brush rock! 😉

Never watched Star Wars but the painting is great

  • @silvernevermoregaming6474

Using brushes, all depends on what you're painting, and how big, medium, or small the details are for the painting. If you're trying to cover the bigger parts, you'll want to use a flat head brush, or maybe even a flat head diagonal brush, that way you can not only paint the bigger parts but also have some minor control on making sure that the paint doesn't overlap the smaller area. But when you used the tube-like brush head for the shoulders and such, was actually a safer mover. As, I've said before, you'll want to use a flat head or something similar for big areas, but using a thin tube-like brush or something similar, to go around the edges of those smaller details will build a kind of border, and in turn, shows you how much of that big space you have.
(I tried to explain it as best as possible, but if this just confuses you, even more, I heavily apologize)

I'm not an expert, but gouache should be mat. That's the whole point for me. Even more than the reactivation. Loved your piece. It's such a joy to hear you have fun with your painting. It feels as if using gouache is the first time you've really felt free in your art. Like a huge sigh of relief that you can just art and not think about it too much. My favourite part of using gouache is running my hand over the dried painting. It has such a lovely rough yet smooth feel. I'd love to see more comparisons with higher end brands. I personally like the finish (on camera at least) of the more expensive side (non Arteza). I do think this might have a lot to do with your choice of Darth Vader for the subject however. In the finished view the cape looks softer and the metal actually does look like metal. The Arteza side is nice too, but the over all effects on the other looks better in my opinion (including the lightsaber).

Hullo Anthony, I believe Arteza is a bargain brand. I have enjoyed using Turner’s Design Gouache as my premium paints! NOT Acryla gouache, but that is another kind of paint! BRUSHES: soft but firm is key to most gum arabic Paints. I have recommended golden taklon synthetic brushes for painting with gouache and watercolors! You can use faux squirrel hair or real squirrel brushes if you are a fan of the real hair brushes. Synthetic brushes are just so good today. Multiple diameter hairs is key in holding fluid, paint! I believe Chloe Rose’s brushes are taklon. Princeton, Mimik, from Jerry’s Artarama are also brands to consider. I enjoy watching your videos and I would recommend DaVinci of California for ANY PAINT PRODUCTS! They sell it all! I use their white gouache paint with every other gouache paint I have purchased! You always need more white and I know you living in Germany shipping may make them to expensive, but if you are looking for a “Best” paint you might give it a try. You can always look them up here on CZcams! You take care and have a lovely day!

For brushes, since gouache is so similar to watercolor you'd be best off with watercolor brushes. Sable (kolinsky is usually regarded as the gold standard but red sable can also work well) is great for detail work with plenty of spring in the bristles while also holding a lot of water and paint. They're not as "firm" as synthetic nylon brushes (which, considering nylon points can be hard and sharp enough to damage some paper, that's not exactly a bad thing) while still being plenty firm and springy to hold their point. For large washes and other large areas you can get some squirrel brushes that are quite soft and hold a lot of water for a clean, even layer.

Have you ever tried using Gouache on wood panel? If you wish to hang the art pieces up then a glass frame causes that reflection so panel would be better though it leaves the paintings vulnerable. After all just a drop of water could activate the paint again. I haven't tried it yet but apparently (Dorland's) Wax medium can protect the gouache painting as a varnish. (Any water based varnish would risk activating the paint again after all.) Maybe worth looking into? Or an idea for a video on how to best protect your gouache artpieces.
As for brushes, there are a lot of different ones that can cause different effects but there are a few easy ones to use. An old brush with the hairs standing up in all directions is great to use for tree leaves, fireflies, sparks, distant grasses and textures. Just put a little paint on the end of the hairs and dep them on the painting, do so in varying colours to show depth and shading. The fan brush is great for cross-hatching, grasses, hair and long strands when dragged over the surface.
I think the Arteza looked more opague than the other one. Looking forward to the next Gouache painting! These always inspire me to continue painting even on the sluggish days. Who needs GFuel, just watch ADCArtAttack.😸

My favourite is the expensive side. It feels more, real? And the blends seem smoother.

Do you have older paintings that you have used gouache on? I think it will be an interesting idea to take an old painting and trying to add on or make a whole different painting just by reactivating the original colors

The Vader costume is PVC plastic and patient leather, so he would be refective.

Reflective gauche is a bit of a problem. Gauche is absolutely meant to be matte. Have you tried Windsor and Newton designers gauche? I believe that’s meant to be the best.
