I walked out of the theatre with my dad and the first thing I said was, this is how the star wars movies should've made us feel, just enough nostalgia and a good enough story to give us hope for the franchise

@@frozenpiper2 Part of it is the nostalgia...but a bigger part than that is simply the fact that you got to see a father and his daughter (and his grandkids) finally say their goodbyes, and come to an understanding they never got to share in life. She got to see just what a hero her dad really was, and that everything he did, was to protect the world from a horrible fate...for her. He gave up being her father, to make sure she got to grow up safe. And we got to watch her realize it.

    • @robexists
      @robexists Před 2 lety +3

Weirdly, that was the same line that convinced me I'd probably not like this new movie. I'm a 90's kid who didn't really grow up watching Star Wars or Ghostbusters more than a couple times. I don't have a huge attachment to those characters, but I know a lot of people do. And that's fine! But the Mando season 2 finale was pretty disappointing in that it took something fairly new within that universe and built it all up to a moment that didn't really have any emotional weight within that standalone story, but rather only resonated if you came in with years of love for that character. (Honestly, same with the Ahsoka and Boba Fett episodes.)
I'm not against reviving old franchises, but even for fans who were moved to tears by those kind of nostalgic, wonder-filled "the thing I love is back!" moments, I don't think it's a trick they can do twice. Are people gonna freak out just as much the next time that Mando finale character appears and effortlessly slices through a bunch of droids? Does a Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 still rely on "wow, a proton pack?!" type moments, or will the characters and audience have moved past being excited about those things, and will viewers still enjoy whatever new elements it tries to bring to the table? I know this channel reacted really well to the Book of Boba Fett trailer, but my impression is that elsewhere, it surprisingly fell a little flat for a lot of fans, and I think that's because it's presented as if people are still going to be freaked out that Boba Fett is back - when, yeah, they freaked out about it when that happened a year ago. By the end of 8 weekly episodes (or however many that season will have), is that enough to keep people excited, or is there another element to that series that'll keep Fett fans and new viewers alike engaged til the end of its standalone story?

The emotional unpinning within this story helped forgive the nostalgia dump that has sunk most of the other reboot/sequels of these beloved franchises. Also, I completely agree about McKenna Grace. She sold the film. When Phoebe is going to public school for the first time and says, in that completely Egon deadpan delivery, 'This is a state-sponsored work camp for degenerates.' Then I did not expect that they would actually show his face, but together with the ghost effects, all the bad sides of CGI were nicely covered.
Then I assumed that they would go all the way and let him make a small computer generated speech, which would have gone too far in my opinion, given that the actor is no longer alive. But they did not. They knew exactly how to handle this whole sensitive topic.
This whole movie was explicitly made for Harold Ramis as a tribute and it could not have been executed in a better way.

Complaining about fan service, saying the 2016 version is better, and how they completely ignored the 2016 version. If it's honestly not your cup of tea, you shouldn't review it. Lastly, didn't the 2016 version completely ignore the events that took place in the first 2 ??

I'll say this as I said in other comments, this was the idea for Ghostbusters all along. When they started to develop 2016 Ghostbusters, it was suppose to be about a franchise thing, there franchise was struggling and such, but they changed it down the road for some reason. Venkman says in part one, the franchise rights alone are lucrative. So this was always suppose to head that way. With this direction, this allows the world to expand, allows directors to have their twist and style, as now it is more about the world and no longer centered around the original. This movie close that chapter, and opens up the world. Can't wait, please see it, it is so good. The tribute is amazing.

At the beginning of the film, i was ok with the way they "showed" Egon. Always in the shadow, never show his face, just to remind you.
At the end, when the film went silent and you see Egon next to Phoebe felt so good. I didnt tear up...until you have the 4 back together... and even the first time in cinema, i had one thought, Dans "Im sorry" Bills "I knew you might turn up" and Ernies "You should have called, i miss you" to me, it wasnt said to Egon, it was them saying "Sorry Harold, we should have done this, while we had time"

12:30 My wife and I JUST got back from the theater seeing this movie. Everyone stayed for the mid-credit scene. By time we got to the post-credit scene, EVERYONE except for us had left. We're the only ones who saw it. Ridiculous.

Saw this movie today with my Nephew and we both loved it, I grew up with the OG movies and Cartoon series my Nephew is new to it all only being 11, but he's mad on them as I am, I agree with everything you both said ,it hit all the beats, plenty of references to the first movie whilst adding more to it, and yes i shed tears when they paid that little tribute to Harold, I sure hope they do another one with this cast it so much deserves it, i'm giving this movie a one out of one Hamster cigarette joke, just what the f, that had me rolling.

My favorite thing about this movie is they knew exactly what to do with Harold’s character and it was perfect from beginning to end. The ending was the cherry on top of it all I got worried how they would make him talk, but they didn’t and I think that was a smart move. And I loved the symbolism that even though all the ghosts went down in the traps, Egon went up and turned into sparkle like dust before the movie ends they admit that this whole movie was not just for a revival of the franchise but makes the title “afterlife” have a deeper meaning for Harold.

I love and adore every micro-millisecond of this movie. I loved the chess game between Phoebe and Egon's spirit. I loved the hug that Callie got from ghost Egon near the end before he dematerialized. Fun fact, multitalented McKenna Grace (Phoebe) sang "Haunted House", one of the songs played during the end credits.

Loved subtle things like being no cellphone coverage in town, so with no coverage; no mobile phones in the film. School still operates on VHS, so using 80s tech in the film. Both took the modern gloss off the film which I loved.

My only complaint is that I wish they'd worked the theme song into the last part of the final battle. I realize they were focusing on the sad, emotional beats, but they could have done that after the battle was won. Just my opinion, though. It was still a great film.

I consider myself to be a "tough guy" but I totally lost it at the end. I cried like a widow at the end and I'm not even ashamed of it. Seeing my childhood heroes back together again just crushed me in the best way. I had all of the toys, the books and devoured the cartoon as a kid. I waited over 30 years for this and I'm so grateful for it.

I absolutely loved this movie! Loved it! If I had to pick one thing I didn’t like, it was the fact that Ray did not believe Egon and that was the cause of their falling out.
In no way, in my head, do I see Ray suddenly dismissing Egon. That was one plot point I did not find believable.
