Stately = formal, slow, and having a style and appearance that causes admiration; mesto = sad. Now we understand why CPE's concertos were a temporary pinnacle in cello music. To the end of the first movement the cadenza in truly (father) Bach style, and now we're plunged into some pre-romantic inner turmoil. All of that masterfully executed by an artist of such youth we don't actually expect to know this depth in feelings nor the finesse and fine distinction between sad/ downhearted and crying/ desparation. The cello keeps singing, the vibrato, particularly, is so delicately dosed, and those moments of fragility to the end (others simply miss), no sobbing. Glorious.
