This channel gets a lot right, but to clear up any confusion: Meghan's Maltese ancestor was born in Malta of two emigre U.K. citizens, Mary & Thomas Bird. They named their daughter Mary as well. Thus, Mary Bird II was born in Malta. Mary II's mother was indeed an Irish woman, and her father, Thomas, despite being a British military officer, was also full-blooded Irish. He had been disowned by his Irish relatives for joining the British military, which is a huge reason why he and his wife were more than eager to relocate on military assignment to Malta. Mary Bird, the elder, is often confused with her daughter, Mary II, because they bore the same name. So this is where the confusion requires more study to determine whether Mary Bird, the elder, is the same Mary Bird who worked briefly at Windsor Castle as a cook/ maid, prior to leaving England for Malta with her husband, Thomas Bird. Despite what the narrator says that still seems to be a possibility, as she could have worked there briefly before she married and simply used her future married name for convenience. Her daughter, Mary Bird II, was born in Malta. From what I have read, my understanding is that the daughter, Mary Bird II, later migrated to Canada after growing up in Malta. Again, accurate dates would have to determine whether this narrator is correct in stating that Mary, the elder moved to Canada with Mary II, when Thomas Bird's regiment was reassigned six years after they arrived in Malta, and that Thomas died around that same time. It has to be Mary II who ultimately moved to New Hampshire and married George David Merrill. One of the children of Mary Bird II and George Merrill, Gertrude May Merrill, married Frederick George Sanders, and gave birth to Doris May Sanders (the paternal grandmother whom Meghan was close to, and often visited in a nursing home in Doris' later years). Doris May Sanders met and married Gordon Arnold Markle and gave birth to three sons, one of whom is Thomas Wayne Markle, Sr. (Meghan's, now estranged, father). Studying genealogical history uncovers a lot. Meghan and Harry are 17th cousins via her paternal ancestry and via his maternal ancestry.
So, if the narrator is accurate that Mary Bird, the elder, relocated to New Brunswick, Canada with her husband's regiment only six years after their arrival in Malta, then Mary Bird II would have been 4 or 5 when the family left Malta for Canada. If the survival conditions in Malta were as poor for children as the narrator describes, it would make sense for the Bird family to desire relocating with the regiment. In that case, Meghan's ancestral ties to Malta are even more tenuous, albeit still valid.

I have heard a lot about this 2015 trip, and the pictures of 'Meghan in Malta' have been widely circulating on CZcams, Instagram, and in print publications ever since 2017. However, Meg's ancestral connection to Malta is often confused. At least, this channel correctly indicates that the ancestor was born in Malta of parents who were from the U.K. Thus, Meg's ancestor was not indigenous Maltese. In that respect, Meghan may be unaware of her Maltese ancestor's parents' U.K. origins. When people say to Meg, 'You look Maltese,' that resemblance has to do with Meghan's maternal African ancestry, not her ancestral connection to a Maltese citizen with U.K. emigrant parents. Capisce?! 🫰🏽😉
For instance, Malta is located south of Italy and north of Libya, in the Mediterranean region, where you will find many natives with olive-toned skin, dark hair and dark eyes, similar to Meghan. This is because there is historically, since the beginning of time, huge intermixture between Africans and Europeans, particularly relevant in the Mediterranean region (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, in addition to Egypt, Morocco, and other north African countries).
