  • I may have picked up a few brooches over the last year and a half...so today I thought I'd show you the new additions! I figure some of you like seeing vintage costume jewelry as much as I do after all. And don't worry, I will still have another video for you this Thursday sewing something fun...

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Oh my those are beautiful; your taste is exquisite!
By the way...I've loved your taste in arthropod-related fashion ever since you were making that magnificent Cicada gown, and you were right the first time; those two golden insect pins are True Bugs of the order Hemiptera (specifically of the shield/stink bug shape....I worked for a while at the Royal Ontario Museum but dealt more in Zoology than Costume, which I mildly regret). They are not beetles, which are of the order Coleoptera. It's an easy mistake to make though, as beetle species are so common that *one in every four animals is a beetle!*
By by the way...on that subject, I am reminded of the opening of a British wildlife documentary I saw as a child in the 80s:
"I asked the professor what, after a lifetime study of the creation, he had to say about the mind of the Creator. He replied, *'An inordinate fondness for beetles.'* "

Brooches are massively under appreciated as an outfit booster. That big silver leaf could sit well on anything from a dress to a beret, the little jewelled initials used as an alternative to the more usual collar points, the possibilities are endless. I'm partial to a brooch as a boutonnière or just in a hat band, especially if it matches the cufflinks I tend to be sporting. They have this ability to fine tune the era or look of an outfit too. Definitely a fan of this sort of content.

I got too close the side of her face and through a confluence of events managed to close my eye ON her earring with such force that I pulled it out of her earlobe with my eyelid. We managed to untangle me from the earring (carefully) and thankfully no damage to my eye other than it being very watery, and ending up with a minor eye infection the next day, but I'm a lot more careful nowadays and my girlfriend was rather scarred by the whole incident and doesn't wear the pliers anymore. Goodness gracious the sizes are awesome. I sold accessories in a very high end department store in the 1980’s. It was a big thing to pin a gorgeous silk scarf up to your shoulder with a giant Monet brooch. I actually use my brooches on my hats. I have a lot of plain modern ones (that fit my HUUUUGGEEEE head). So I tie a scarf or ribbon around as band, and then use one or more of my brooches, sometimes using the brooches to pin huge flowers onto the hats. Most of the antique hats I own are tilt hats, because, um, HUUUUGGGEEE head. I adore looking at people’s collections. Your style in brooches is very different from mine. I am Victorian/Edwardian/Nouveau/Romantic - unless it is rhinestones and then I don’t care as long as it is huge! I’ve had to learn jewelry making to get the giant shoulder duster clip earrings I love to wear. Is it a large earring if it doesn’t hit your shoulder? LOLOL!

I adore that first giant leaf broach and the curled leaf/feather. Oof. So wonderful. And I liked two between as well. Im not usually drawn to floral jewelry but leaves and greenery? Yep. Yes please. And 3:19 with this shiny gold number, did anyone else see an arrow with rings? Cause that what my brain wen to lol
Sadly I very rarely get any kind of joy from shopping anymore. I used to with certain things but now the dollar store or sometimes the thrift store are the only places I get a hint of it. Most of the time even if I was really secure and happy with my choice the second I get to the register or go to buy now online I get hit with a huge way of anxiety and "is this the thing I should be spending this money on" and after, guilt and anxiety wondering if I will need that money for something else. Its just come about from having to pinch pennies and worry about having no money for far too long. Years of it now. Even when I need something I feel guilty buying it unless I can find what I need for less than a couple bucks. Then the problem is if I find something I might need for a really good deal or being given away I feel I have to take it or risk regretting it later. It doesn't help that Im craft and repurpose and alter and find uses for things so you never know. And the number of times I thought there was no way I had a need for something only to want it for a project a few months later? Makes it even harder to turn things down.
Thankfully I still get plenty of enjoyment and candy for my brain seeing other peoples stuff. Whether made, bought long ago, or recently purchased.

A lot of my retail therapy revolves around crafting and sewing supplies. Unfortunately, I have a million project ideas, but fairly limited time/motivation to actually make said projects. Hence I have boxes full of fabric, yarn and sewing patterns sitting in my closet.

I’m from a family of brooch lovers. Even as a young girl my aunt gifted me with a set of gold Monet teddy bears. I’ve inherited my granny’s and mom’s now and along with the ones I added through the years I might just have as many as you do! Oh, and Granny had a set of large pink jeweled spiders you would die for! 🕷

Ohh I’m excited for this! I took a frame 🖼 and put some foam backing and then I covered it with some old purple velvet I had that now I can look at, and made myself a display for all my brooches 🌟 and I realized it’s not completely full (ha ha) it’s a long narrow like a picture frame and I did buy a set
Ancient Egyptian - replica brooches and I’m always looking for more of those and of course some really fun 🌟 star type styles I can’t wait to see what you have.
Then need 1940s Art Deco to- 1950s to wear with pinup outfits!

If your looking for ideas on how to wear brooches beyond pilling them to hats, scarves, purses, and such, my grandmother has been known to keep some plain chain necklaces that she'll feed through the broach turning it into a kind of pendant. So if your willing to wear necklaces but not brooches that can work and if the occasion arrises where you want to wear it as a brooch you still can.

I think what I like about your videos, besides the talent you display in what you do, is the way you analyze and deconstruct what you do and your thought process (it struck me in the sustainablility video, but the bit in this one where you explain why you buy things too). I enjoy people being self concious, but in a good way (maybe there's a better word in the English language for that, that I can't find right now)
