Fallout: New Vegas is an action role-playing video game in the Fallout video game series. The game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It released for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October 2010. Downloadable content and expanded re-editions followed in 2010-2012.
The game is based in a post-apocalyptic, open world environment around the area of Nevada, California, and Arizona. The player takes control of the character known as the Courier, who is hired by a delivery service to take an unknown package across the Mojave Desert to the New Vegas Strip. During the delivery, the Courier is intercepted, shot in the head, and left for dead by a mysterious man who steals the package. After being found by a friendly robot, Victor, and healed by a man named Doc Mitchell, the Courier is thrust back into the desert to seek revenge and recover the stolen package. By doing this, the player becomes caught between various factions competing for control over the desert and its most valuable asset, the Hoover Dam, ultimately coming to shape the future of its inhabitants.
Even though it directly succeeds Fallout 3 in order of Fallout game releases, offers a similar action role-playing experience, and shares its engine and legacy content with Fallout 3, New Vegas is not a direct sequel. It marks the return of some elements found in Fallout 2. The game was a critical and commercial success, shipping more than 5 million copies altogether.

They did make Vegas so empty for technical reason. They originally had big plans for it and it wasn't going to be broken up into several loading screens, but the PS3 and Xbox 360 just weren't able to match the dev's ambitions.

***** No I'm not. I know the mods that make it the way the developers intended and they're very performance demanding. Not a chance to run them perfectly without a 4gb patch and a much-better-than-minimum requirements hardware.
Do you always assume it's about the ''peasants'' vs. mustard race fight?

    • @DreamyWoIf
      @DreamyWoIf Před 9 lety +6

***** I know all of these mods because I use all of them, New Vegas Anti-Crash included. But the NPC mods will always be a major risk because they seem to be the biggest struggle for the outdated engine.
Also, that does not mean it's more stable. Fallout 3 and win 7/8 stability is only a matter of changing the Havok Threads .ini setting from 1 to 2, with the Fo3 unofficial patch, of course.
Obsidian made quite some changes to the engine and they ended screwing up more than they should have.

Gggmanlives New Vegas is barren due to the limits of the consoles. It was meant to be much, much bigger if you look at the concept art.
Personally Fallout 3, along with Morrowind have a hatred for me and crash way too much for their own liking, New Vegas only crashes for me when I'm at New Vegas ironically. Even the game is trying to hide the let-down of the reveal of New Vegas.
Fun fact: most of the new editions for New Vegas came from mods in Fallout 3.

This game is the reason im not overly excited about Fallout 4. Fallout is one of my favourite series, fallout 2 being my favourite in the series but I was let down by FO3 when it cane out. Shallow Role Playing and a very black and white story really frustrated me about FO3 but I still enjoyed it for what it was.
When New Vegas arrived it just blew FO3 out of the water, despite its bugs. Better Role Playing, better writing, more interesting characters, everything is not so Black and White etc.
If obsidian were working on FO4 id be more excited but Bethesda post Morrowind are just not as good as they once were.

fossilfern While I totally agree with you in New Vegas being a better game and felling more "Fallout" (hell some Obsidian guys worked on the previous Fallout games), I'm still exited for Fallout 4, even if Bethesda fucks up completely with the writing, the stuff they showed in the gameplay trailer looks fucking sweet!
      - Building settlements
      - Owning a Vertibird
      - Voice for the player character (what? I like it, deal with it)
      - The fact that power armor is no longer just a "suit" you put on
      - and has a frigging jetpack!
      - The world finally has some color!
I just hope they don't make the game as easy as FO3, and I also wish they adopt the hardcore mode from New Vegas and improve it.

I've got a good few playthroughs to my name. Mostly, I end with the Independent Vegas ending. I've only sided with Mr. House twice and the NCR once just to see what kind of ending I'd get. I'll NEVER play a Legion-aligned character, though. Slavery, misogyny, and Luddism are WRONG!
Whenever I do a playthrough, I always do the DLCs before ever entering the Strip. I did all the DLCs in the "right" order on my last playthrough, beginning with Dead Money and ending with Lonesome Road. Dead Money for the Holorifle and gold bars; Honest Hearts for She's Embrace and Salt-Upon-Wounds' Helmet*; Old World Blues for the Heartless and Spineless perks, Sink holotapes, and the fact that Dr. Venture is in it; and Lonesome Road for the ED-E upgrades and Fist of Rawr. By the time I've started Lonesome Road, I already have max or near-max Speech, Science, Survival, and Medicine skills because of all the skill checks Ulysses gives you. I always talk him down through the Speech checks, then nuke both the Legion and NCR for the post-DLC loot. I can always get back in the NCR's good graces when I visit the Lucky 38 for the first time anyway; til then, I just use disguises. If you enter the Lucky 38 and then exit on your first visit, a NCR trooper spawns near you and gives you the message from Ambassador Crocker, setting your NCR reputation to Idolized. Your rep gets upgraded even if you were a terrorist in their eyes. So if I play a anti-NCR character in any capacity, I'll milk the infamy for all it's worth but leave certain NPCs alive so I can do certain quests later. Last playthrough, I used this method to get Boone in my party and keep him after killing Kimball without ever getting any warnings from him.** When it came time to do You'll Know It When It Happens, I shot Kimball using NCR armor, Turbo/Implant GRX, and a Stealth Boy, killing Kimball in disguise and intentionally failing the quest.
*I recommend getting The Legion Will Ryse because the modded SUW Helmet you get with this mod is infinitely more badass than the vanilla version. Thank you very much, Oxhorn.
**The trick is to wait until AFTER you've first spoken to Mr. House to recruit Boone. Remember the fame exploit described above? Ditto Arcade, if you helped the Legion in any way before.

Amen to that. New Vegas modded with PC is definitely the embodiment of turning something great into even greater. For example, I hate how you cannot sprint in the vanilla game. The fix? Just Vanilla Sprint mod. Or how about the marksman carbine (and the All-American) where its scope is more of a sniper scope rather than a reflex sight? The solution: Marksman Carbine Scope Edit mod. These are just a couple of examples I feel New Vegas was missing among other things.

What happened when Fallout 4 came out? While the game does allow me to play the sniper and assassin archetypes that I love in shooters, it rubs me into the problem I've had with the game's overhaul to Skills ever since I heard the news about it. That you're dependent on Perks to build your character, unlike Skills of past games where you could specialize in a few and make yourself very good at one thing very quickly, with Perks to round out the rest.
This arbitrary restriction placed on game mechanics means that until I'm at the right level, or have the right SPECIAL stat, I'm hamstrung in how I can build my character. Moreover, this proves how little Bethesda understood about what made SPECIAL, Perks and Skills separate yet versatile things for character building when they took the approach they did for this game.
(Take note of the various stats on offer, as well as the choices of Skills. This is what Bethesda sacrificed on the ARPG altar. i.ytimg.com/vi/gFerNt8_OCg/maxresdefault.jpg )
Things that are Skills like Lockpicking and Hacking should not be restricted to Perks, because they are not unique bonuses, just as Sneak, Unarmed, Barter and the like should not be dependent on SPECIAL stats with no way to improve them outside of SPECIAL increases and Perks, because these are not inherent abilities.
By restricting Skills to Perks, Bethesda bloated the Perks system and subsequently took away some of its appeal. Gaining levels no longer feels special because all you’re given is a single Perk point versus a pool of Skill points, and in fact, you can let your points pile up before using them, just as you could in Skyrim. It’s the kind of progression system I expect from Action-RPGs, not Fallout.
And then there's a lot of Skyrim Syndrome on display with this system. By this I mean there are a lot of parallels to the inefficient design of Skyrim's "Perk Trees", and the style of benefits a player gets for their point investments.
If you go back to Skyrim right now and look at the first Perks available for any of the 18 trees, what do you find? 12 that are percentage increases to effectiveness, 5 that reduce Magicka costs for certain spells, and one that allows new Armor creation. All of these are bog-standard upgrades for an ARPG, with the Armor one being little more than a key to unlock something that could work independent of the avatar you choose. And then you climb the trees and notice something else: You're forced to drop points into things you may not want to reach things you likely will.
In terms of enemy AI, it’s a step up, but not far enough of one. While enemies have new moves and attacks -- Deathclaws will bob and weave, as well as throw environment clutter, mole rats and radscorpions dig underground then pop up when at low health, and humans will now use cover and throw grenades to flush players out of hiding -- in practice, it only works half the time. Enemies can still get stuck thanks to pathfinding or other issues with the navmesh, and melee enemies will always charge your position, even if you're riddling them with bullets/energy as they do so, as though they know it’s their destiny to get left-clicked to death.
The same applies to Super Mutants and Synths, the former of which have a new type: Kamikaze Mutants. Just like melee enemies, they’ll charge right at you, completely self-aware of their destiny, hoping they take you down with them. I’d like to know who thought this was a good idea, even if it works in the player’s favor when a successful hit on the bomb they carry is made. Lore-wise, it’s a contradiction.
And then there are the flying enemies. They’re smarter than the ones in New Vegas, sure, but if you get any sort of lag while fighting them, the stronger types will deplete your health in seconds. In turn, VATS becomes the best way to counter their speed and hit them.
In Fallout 4, the one to three word descriptions are often too vague, and sometimes can make the character say something completely different than what you think. Not only is this bad design, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a 2011 game, showed how to make this work. Put the descriptions on the left, and the textbox on the right, with your dialogue listed in full in the latter.
(Take it away, Adam Jensen. tsupp.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/maxresdefault.jpg )
And then there’s the loss of Skills, which puts all the weight of dialogue checks on the Charisma SPECIAL stat. Perks are never put to use in dialogue where they could be, for example using Robotics Expert to shut down Ironsides, and the ones that do affect dialogue do not do so with direct effects. Just passives that improve the chance to succeed when a check comes up. What’s more, these dialogue checks are not shown with numbers, but colors, and they do not change even if you have Lady Killer/Black Widow maxed out.
I'm sure many who were paying attention to the pre-release hype for Fallout 4 remember what happened when the news leaked that your character's son was going to be one of the big names among the factions playing at controlling the Commonwealth. Fans who thought this was a huge spoiler went crazy, the joke about how to kill your son went viral, and then we had Pete Hines enter the fray with a statement that regardless of this reveal, players would have more than enough to like about Fallout 4.
      (i.redditmedia.com/jXxmvZm9c....jpg?w=320&s=baf0d119ef19e411e699b049ce9c851b)
Sorry Pete. That's a lie if I ever heard one.
In essence, what he was admitting to was this part of the main plot, the part that pulls the Sole Survivor into and through the world of Fallout 4, is completely forgettable and not as big a deal spoiled as it would've been unspoiled.
Here's a comparative example, just to show how dumb this is. Let's say Fallout 1 had the same caliber of hype surrounding it that Fallout 4 had, and then some players got their hands into the core of the game early, found out about how the main plot ends, and then posted things like, "Hey, don't ask the water merchants to supply your vault. You'll lose more easily that way." And then let's say Tim Cain (Sorry, Tim) came forward and said, "I'm sorry this got spoiled for you, but it's just one option in our game. You can try it if you choose, though."
See how dumb this gets? Finding the water chip is the crux of the early game in Fallout 1, and you're on a timer, so of course the water merchants making trips to extend your time seems like a great idea, but being told that choice, and its consequence, is not that bad spoiled versus unspoiled is a blatant lie because it changes the outcome of events in the game in a big way.
Speaking of the Brotherhood, the third faction in this, they’re one that Bethesda tried to return to their roots, with no success. The Brotherhood are supposed to be isolationist, not getting involved with the events of the outside world, only ever letting outsiders in if they perform a remarkable service. What we got instead was a genocidal Elder, a descendant of the Maxson family no less, who not only persuades the people of the Commonwealth to assist him, he makes an outsider a Sentinel within a few months.
Speaking of traditionalists, New Vegas handled this far better than Bethesda did. Throughout Veronica’s quest “I Could Make You Care”, we saw that because the Brotherhood were so focused on pre-war tech, while making no changes to the outside world, they were fading away, suffering a slow, sorry death in isolation. The isolationism was also causing problems with food and supply scavenging, leaving them unable to repair their aging and malfunctioning bunkers, and creating conflicts with the more militaristic leaning members.

Great review. It is worth noting, and as a Fallout 1 & 2 fangirl* I feel it is my duty to point out that the reason this game is much truer to what Fallout originally was and truly is in its heart is because Obsidian was founded by and houses many people who worked at Black Isle studios, the creators of classic Fallout. Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, Brian Menze, J.E. Sawyer, and so on were all key people at Black Isle and all of those names except J.E. Sawyer were people that worked on Fallout 1 & 2, though Sawyer still had a hand in some of Black Isle's other masterpieces namely Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. I admit that when I heard that Timothy Cain _THE_ father of Fallout joined Obsidian, I squeed. I really hope Bethesda will give Obsidian another shot, _especially_ with Timothy Cain now being a part of them. That... that would be incredible.
*Don't interpret this as me being one of the people who yells "FALLOUT 3 IS THE SHITTEST RPG EVER AND ISN'T FALLOUT ARGH." My thoughts on Fallout 3 are such: It's a good game on its own merits, and I honestly feel I would rather Bethesda did what they did and give us their own personal vision of the Fallout universe and make a game with the methods they have experience with rather than attempt to imitate Black Isle in gameplay and writing perfectly. It's not the type of RPG they have experience making, and by making a game in the style that they _do_ have experience in the game managed to benefit greatly from those particular strengths regardless of their differences to what strengths the originals had in their type of RPG experience, and at the end of the day Bethesda didn't bastardize the universe or the art to the point of being unrecognizable so they earned the name.

If you have played the original Fallout games (1,2,tactics) then New Vegas is the only good FPS Fallout sequel. You may argue about Fallout 3 and 4, but as Fallout games, they are bad, breaking the lore :new power armor, shitty enclave, GECKs being used for water purification (GECKs are high tec fertilizers, not purifiers, they should have just taken a water purification chip) I like Fallout 3 and 4, but i hate them at the same time, but Fallout New Vegas was made by Obsidian, who were the former devs of Interplay, the guys who originaly made Fallout, and the devs knew what they were doing, so it is a really good game.

Then playing new vegas and getting annoyed that theyre not as good, that theres no illogical stuff like a town around a nuke or a green hue everywhere even tho its been 200+ years since the war. Those people cant see good writing and would just like to run in a random direction, find a raider camp, kill them all, continue in said direction and do everything again.

My only real gripe with this game is how barren it is. I know it means there are less combat encounters which may make it better for some, but it sometimes makes new vegas more lifeless than the grey/green world of F3. Given the fact that new vegas wasn't heavily affected by the bombings of the war it makes sense, but still, everything else in the game is great....Except cazadors....fuck cazadors

    • @Zeon081

I tried fallout 3, but I couldn't play it for too long. I guess there were interesting places to find but I didn't get immersed what so ever. Dialogues always show you what the best option is and the god damn quest marker somehow seems to have a much worse effect than other games with the quest marker. And just in general, the story wasn't all too riveting I thought.
Is fallout new vegas better in immersion?

I like Bethesdas Fallout games and who knows, if it wasn't for them tactics would've been tje last fallout game. That said I much prefer NV because it's a true rpg and a continuation of the original series.

Apparently, the strip being relatively barren was a matter of console limitations. They even had to segment it into parts, something they clearly didn't intend to do based on the intro alone. I know you're going to hate me saying this, but... there are mods to help that.
