As Ronny says what happens to guys that need a 4x4, will the government go pave all the roads in Australia in the outback so you can drive a normal car? Crazy. Some places just simply are not accessible without 4x4

Russia people! That’s who Australia aligns with in terms of the few remaining counties without vehicle efficiency standards! When you buy anything you look at how energy efficient it is. Why should cars be any different? If you want to buy a big car then make it better. Seems pretty sensible to me. Why you’d want a vehicle which uses more fuel and causes greater pollution than it needs to is beyond comprehension. Let’s not succumb to scare campaigns. This is hardly a radical proposal.

it sucks that the manufacturers are gonna pass the costs down to the consumer.. however, people are already paying $80,000-$120,000 for dual cabs and large SUVs. This efficiency tax won't do much to slow the demand

If people can stomp up $60-$70k for a Dual Cab Ute, a lot of people are paying even more and then are head over to ARB or TJM for their thousands of dollars of upgrades, then they shouldn't really care too much about forking out another $4-$5K for the RRP for the Ute, should they? That's something to think about ....
NVES is designed to get manufactures to bring in more fuel efficient vehicles, whether it's in ICE, EV, Hybrid or PHEV form. It's becoming increasingly clear that EV's should not be the only type of vehicle to be considered for our unique situation, a big country with vast area's to travel. Again, you only have to look at other counties that already have and have had fuel emission standards for years, like the USA and Canada, which is why Australia is modelling our standards to those of the USA standards and let's not forget what vehicles are the biggest selling vehicles in those two countries!! Yep, the Ford F Series, Chevrolet Silverado and RAM 1500! But how can that be when they have fuel emission standards?? Right?? So we can have fuel emission standards and still buy Utes in their thousands!

Without Falcons and commodores, more families use dual cabs as well. Engines are also less reliable with the newer emission control devices. Electric vehicles are a false alternative. What are people supposed to drive?

It’s asinine a country as vast as Australia with huge distances between population centers is held to the same emissions standards as Europe comprising geographically small countries with dense populations. The government should abandon net zero and apply a reasonable offset to account for Australias unique, remote challenges with the proviso of adopting cleaner solutions as technology improves over time.

Just another revenue raiser. How will it actually cut emissions? People who need or want a 4x4 have one for a reason, it isn’t magically going to change anything. Just 🐂 💩 ‘look what we are doing to improve emissions’ when it will make little difference. Not like you can use a Suzuki swift for tradie work or enjoyable camping with a family.
