Rodanthe's Vanishing Homes: The Battle Against Coastal Erosion in the Outer Banks 🌊

  • Exploring condemned houses in Rodanthe, OBX, that are being swallowed by the ocean. Yes, those are septic chambers and tanks. Coastal erosion in this area has accelerated dramatically, with some properties losing over 100 feet of shoreline in recent years. The combination of rising sea levels and stronger storms has made Rodanthe one of the most vulnerable areas on the East Coast. Efforts to combat erosion, like beach nourishment, have struggled to keep pace with the rapid changes. The National Park Service has even considered relocating portions of Highway 12 to protect the vital infrastructure. Experts predict that without significant intervention, many more homes and roads will be lost to the encroaching sea. 🌊 #Rodanthe #OuterBanks #CoastalErosion #ClimateChange #ShorelineLoss #EnvironmentalImpact

Rodanthe was a mistake to build on in the first place. The barrier islands move all the time, without rising sea levels. Norfolk VA has the fastest rate of sea lever rise, it's 5.3 millimeters per year. Norfolk can easily adapt, these islands can't.

Hello how are you doing today? I'm so sorry for the loss of your place 🖖 never a good place to build right next to the water! The weather will take it back from you ✌️🙂🙃

As long as you don't blame it on climate change.
Don't forget, everyday the water level rises and falls twice a day.
And every year the temperature gets 40 or 50 degrees hotter and colder depending on the season.
If you're silly enough to build a beach house on stilts, don't complain when it washes away.
P.S. I say this with some standing.
My wife's uncle had a beach house near Myrtle Beach that was wiped out by Hugo.
When they went to check on it, all that was left was a refrigerator that had been in the garage.
They couldn't rebuild because beach erosion didn't leave enough room from the water.
Part of their place was on stilts.

We know that climate change is real and that land formations come and go. There's really no denying that climate change is at least a natural cycle that earth goes through. I think people assume that when someone says climate change they are referring to human caused climate change by the burning of fossil fuels.

Why doesnt the County replenish the sand like VA Beach does? This makes no sense.

Because that's incredibly expensive and only benefits a few wealthy homeowners
