    while this is one of the easiest ways to do things for short term emergencies,
    but, it's also highly inefficient as you waste a LOT of energy converting up and than back down again through wall warts (transformers)
    also lead acid deep cycle batteries should only even be taken down 25% of their rated capacity for longevity, so you have pretty restricted run times. and car batteries will be damaged very easily from much usage as they are not designed for it.
    most of these devices run on 12v (some modems are 9v so be aware) and can be run directly from a battery if you have some basic soldering skills.
    you can also buy 5v (usb) to 12v adapted online (aliexpress or ebay) and run a phone power bank to power one device per converter, running modem and router from the power bank. the bigger the powerbank, the longer the run time.
    with some research you can find all sorts of options.

      I was aiming at quick and easy as in I wasn't really ready for the emergency but I could piece these things together and get a good result. I have boost buck converters which would be far more efficient. See my mod for a Raspberry PI 4 here which could easily be used with this battery or any DC source: czcams.com/video/_wO6SBCw7uU/video.html

    I live in Rural New Zealand with a phone line with dsl internet independent of my mains power, once during a bad winter storm i lost power for 8 days but was still abel to use the internet that whole time due to the backup batteries in the booster shack at the start of my road, i don't know how long the phone lines could hold out in the event of a longer power outage but i still thought that was quite interesting

      Phone lines and internet connections are lifelines for many people, think calling fire, police or ambulance, and usually mandated to have backup power (including diesel generators) to keep that connection active. So this method of powering your Internet gear is certainly valid and I have used it here in central Texas too. I'm glad to know I could help you and that you got value from my work here. You could run the modem directly off a 12 volt battery, same with desktop computers. Laptop will need its proper power a/c adaptor as they are higher voltages. Running components directly will give a longer run time.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před rokem +3

      Yes that would be optimal, but there is a 50/50 of getting the polarity wrong if you don't know what you are doing and that would not end well for the equipment as it is not protected from reverse polarity. If you knew what you were doing going direct would be the most efficient solution. I am thinking of using a DC boost buck cicuit for a direct tie in to the devices as they would act as protection for the devices and keep a a steady voltage to them regardles of the battery or supply voltage. @@richardlloydusa For sure if people are not good with wiring, going direct inst for everyone. I have installed many DVD players in vehicles and worked fine going direct to 12volts, on the other end Im powering a car stereo in my house off a 12volt computer power supply, that also charges a deep cycle marine battery. For UPS have a cyber power 1500 for uninterrupted power, and have an inverter off the marine battery to power things up after everything is saved and shut down, then switch to marine battery for long power outages. Great video and info tho! Could help a lot of people with limited knowledge

      you can find 12v to laptop power units to run a laptop as well, just requires some research.

    Most people already own at least one Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to backup their computer/DVR/etc. In a pinch, just replace the little sealed lead acid battery inside with a car battery and you'll be good to go. Even if using an inverter, I'd feel much safer putting a UPS between that sketchy output and my expensive equipment.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před rokem +2

      Agreed, you could also use a good surge suppression power strip/bar. Tripp Lite makes an excellent choice for Surge suppression power strip/bar At Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3dImVzQ And APC is an excellent choice for a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) At Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3SdLwLZ and yes replacing the usually small sealed lead acid battery in the UPC with the car battery would be a great alternative. I have been thinking of showing a direct connection from the DC ports on the equipment to the battery alternative using a DC Buck Boost converters like these at Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3RaK4IS But this would require you to monitor battery voltage as these circuits would completely drain the battery if not stopped and destroy the battery. Again I meant this video to be for emergency situation purposes where the risk to your gear is outweighed by the situation. Thinking Puerto Rico after Fiona situation. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    180 watts if you run through the cigarette lighter, if you wire directly to the battery does this change?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před rokem +3

      If you go directly to the car battery you can draw the maximum amount of current/power your inverter and or your charging system can handle. I have connected 1000 Watt inverter directly to the same battery you see in the video and only the battery and it would give me the full 1000 Watts until the charge level on the battery hits the inverter lower limit voltage at 10V (which I don't recommend going to) I would stop at 11.59V to keep from possibly damaging the battery. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    How long does this last? An hour? 4? 10?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před rokem +1

      The capacity of the car battery is given in Ah (Amp-hours) and mostly varies between 35Ah and 100Ah, although there are even smaller, but also larger batteries or battery packs used in modern cars. I tested the battery I used in the video and it has a 37Amp Hour capacity so if I was drawing 1 Amp it would be able to power that system for 37 hours. It does depend on your gear and battery really but 24 hours would not have been a stretch for the gear I showed on the video and you can always put the battery back in the car before you deplete it and recharge the battery too!
