Askren went against Aleksakin who was juiced up and a Sambo guy, and has gone against other Sambo guys and won with his awesome smothering wrestling and scrambles. And against Sapo he was relentless with his TD attempts and survived Sapo’s power (though OFC the fight unfortunately ended early). IDT Khabib could hold down Askren, and Askren would be just throwing TDs all night, so it could be a very even match.

Thats the only way to beat khabib is to take him down or at least attempt takedowns. As the fighter fighting khabib. You have to focus on so much. Distance from the cage. Opportunities for striking while also being very aware of a takedown at any moment. Where as khabib its easier. Get into the perimeter of striking Distance circle off cut the cage forward pressure and just wait for a shot to shoot a takedown. And just bob in and out of your opponents striking range and try to get them off balance or on the end of a combination.

Just a jokishly weird assumption for the sake of a rather pointless argument. If Gordon somehow shrunk to 155 after going into mma and somehow got to top position, I believe shrunk Gordon might be the only one who could keep khabib down cuz Gordon’s positional skill is miles ahead of everyone else’s. I don’t know how good GSP’s top game is compared to gordon’s.

I agree with you that he is miles ahead of everyone technically in grappling, let alone MMA. But he is also a very methodical grappler who takes his time and systematically breaks his opponents. The problem he would face is that in MMA, you get max 3 minutes on the ground before the round ends and you get stood up, losing all the positional progress you made. He would have to either speed up his game, which would weaken his methodical system, but would open more opportunities. Or he incorporates good ground and pound to win each round, but would forgo his intricate grips and smothering pressure (because he needs space and posture for decent G&P). Either way, high level grapplers tend to look worse in grappling when they move to MMA for these reasons (look at Jacaré and Garry Tonon). They are still very good, but not as good as in a straight grappling match. (:

@@matthewfon3649 Yeah garry’s more scrambling focused style is more suitable for mma due to ridiculously tight time frame . But I am just arguing that Gordon can keep the top position and therefore win the exchange at least within the round if he managed to get to top position through some magic.

Danaher is so correct about actually going for a takedown against Khabib instead of fighting scared of his wresting. Bully the bully and see what happens because the other stuff ain't working.

I don't know if there's anyone alive with the grappling IQ of John, he's mesmerising to listen to. I've always trained in boxing and muay thai (more for hobby and keeping me sane than competitiveness) andd have only dabbled in BJJ. What I love about jitz is that you can go all out whilst taking almost no damage if done correctly and it's definitely something I'd like to really go at once social distancing laws here in The UK lessen.

I'm a huge Khabib fan, but their observations about Georges' purposeful strategy of attacking his opponents early using their strong suit (often wrestling bc of the laundry list of great wrestlers at 170) vs Khabib often fighting strikers who were, in my view (and Khabib's) tailor-made for him, points to the fact that GSP is the G.O.A.T.
