Lovely video thank you. I grew up not too far from Tring and Berkamsted. My granny used to take me down to the canal. We used to go on the double decker bus, sitting upstairs at the front. Fabulous memories

I didn't know they made locks at Ellesmere, I thought the other place beside Yorkshire was at Bradley on the BCN. Best wishes Stephen.

Lovely vlog, thanks. Brought back memeries of our trip down that way several years ago. The Rising Sun ('The Risers') is a terrific place to have a drink and watch the boats going through.
    Next stop, Winkworth swing bridge!

    Gary
A blooper re lock gates. CRT lock gates are made at Bradley on the BCN (narrow locks) and Stanley Ferry (Aire & Calder) for wide locks. There are other lock gate makers used by other canal and river authorities (EA and National Trust for example).
I've always pronounced Berkhamsted with emphasis on the second syllable. You're showing your northern roots in thinking it's very industrial. You've seen now that it isn't.

Good morning to you all from Bermuda! It has just 4am here and I’m up watching your lovely vlog. The scenery is beautiful. Thank you for mentioning us both again, I was super great to meet to you and have that drink with you. We’ve been through Berkhamstead many times. I noticed that train going by, it looked like a Tesco train lol. Take care guys xx

Modern terms sometimes have some "interesting" history. I was, for several years, the Chief Steward of the Union Local where I worked. Early on, I learned that the origin of the term "steward" was... "the warden of the sty"...as in that which contains swine (sty-warden!). English is a hodge-podge of Celtic, Saxon, Latin, Norse, Norman ... I recall reading a humorous explanation of the probable origin of the English language as an attempt by a Roman Officer to date a Saxon barmaid. Who knows?!

Interestingly you use the word, 'hodge-podge' I've read a book called 'brewers' that discusses the origins of words and their meanings. if I recall correctly some say hotch-potch or something similar. I'd have to check the book so see

Is there a requirement to report dead animals in the canals when they are in the way of the lock gates particularly if too awkward to move out of the way?
