    Best part of 80s-90s toys was making furniture and mountains out of laundry piles and shoe boxes.

    The thing I still like about Castle Grayskull is how many action figure lines me and my brother could use with it as kids (besides He-Man and crew). We'd set it up with GI Joe, Star Wars, and whatever else was on hand. 😀

    My only childhood memory of Barnyard Commandos is picking one up, looking at the back of the package, and thinking that both sides can't be the rebels. It bugged me when I was 8 and it still bugs me now.

    That Planeteer Island playset looks dope as hell! Loved that show as a kid even though I never had the figures, I always wanted Wheeler and the Captain Planet that you could pull the string out of his back and make him fly.

    Super Powers also had the Fortress of Solitude. I think i remember seeing it at Toys R Us and how it dwarfed the Hall of Justice, one of the few playsets I owned, but everything I found on a Google search said it was never made. The Tower of Darkness was also prominent in the Super Powers third series comic with Orion and Mister Miracle escaping from it. Kirby had dropped out by this point, and Infantino drew it, so it never got reprinted the way the first two did.
    The one I most wanted that never came out was the Monster in My Pocket Haunted Mansion. I had only ever seen the box art, but in the past couple of years I saw a photo of the prototype in a catalog online, and it was a repaint of Oh! Jenny's house complete with a doghouse that was far too small for Cerberus. I wrote a screenplay that was over 240 pages based on the Monster in My Pocket comic book when i was in college, and even with the characters being 1-2" high, the logistics of a doll house big enough for each of the crews (in my screenplay, Vampire's team stayed with Jack and Tom Miles in the comics, but Warlock's team stayed with the Raven family--I had wanted Stephen King to play Edgar Raven fully aware of the monsters and as a fictitious character self-deprecating the actor as Uncle Philip claiming he was better than Ben Vereen, who played him, on Webster--then John Weems humored me about reading it before finally saying no to actually reading it) was pretty staggering compared to doll houses I was looking at even at F.A.O. Schwarz that retailed for several hundred dollars.

    Love it! Playsets were the holy grails of my youth. And for many lines, they literally were unattainable. I always remembered looking at pictures of the Air Raiders and Gobots playsets, never realizing they were left unmade. You should do a second video exploring those and the awesome Visionaries playset! Continue the good work!!

    Great vid! I would have wanted every single one, lol. The Tower of Darkness & Hope Island playsets would have been awesome! I feel like I had something similar to the Remco Fortress of Doom. It was a playset my grandma got from Montgomery Wards Outlet (I know, I'm old, lol) and it was robotic looking and made from strong cardboard. I remember it had like 2 or 3 levels and then you could place figures on the very top. It had upper sections on the side that stuck out almost like Titans Tower. It might have had guns on those but not sure. I know I played the heck out of it though. Good times!

  • @gotrekgurnisson9934

    My playset in the 80's was a leftover pile of sand in the backyard. It was actually really great since I could dig caves and tunnels and build platforms and bridges and break out the garden hose to make rivers and waterfalls. That pile devoured some great toys over the years though.

    Great video! For 10:00 I always wondered why Dungeons & Dragon's base on the animated TV show didn't offer the original heroes first. I bought "Warduke" I think it's spelled, and a cool figure as a kid, but back then, had to try to have him join my Star Wars figures, since I think only two D&D figures were sold. The 4 vehicles produced by Galoob for the _Aliens/Predator_ Action Fleet line (which included the Marine Armored Personnel Carrier, Drop Ship, Narcissus Shuttle, and the Predator ship) are all very rare and sell for big bucks on Ebay. Loose examples sell for $70+ and sealed ones routinely sell for _$100 - $300._ That playset would have been AWESOME. Such a shame Galoob decided not to produce it.

    "The Dragons Graveyard would feature a character that was contemplating to kill their nemesis" I mean if I was stuck in another world for 27 episodes where the majority of the episodes involve the Villain Venger completely fuqing me over to get home and almost killed my unicorn I too would drag him to the dragons graveyard and shank the asshole to death and end my problems. But we all have to be the better person here don't we? And we don't even get a cool D&D play set out of it!

    Do you notice there are six indents in the wall of that second Rock Lords playset when it's closed? Each shaped like the original 6 Rock Lords figures in rock form! You could insert each figure into the slot on the wall. Magmar and Boulder's slots are on the shoulders of the castle, on either side of the head. They are literally the angel and devil on the shoulders of Stonehead. 4:18
    There is a scene in the Rock Lords movie where one guy hides in the wall of a cave... So clearly this was foreshadowed!

    Lost of World of Warlord isn't a He-Man knock off as he first appearred in DC Comics in 1975. Conan goes back to the 1930s. Mattel was going to make Conan toys but changed their mind last minute and decided to do something slightly less violent. Now, Remco using those licenses might have been a He-Man cash ins but they characters were not. If anything, He-Man is a Conan knock off with some elements of Superman thrown in.

    • @EdsRetroGeekOut
      @EdsRetroGeekOut  Před 4 lety

      Its a lot more complicated than that 😅

    • @jessewilley531
      @jessewilley531 Před 4 lety +2

      @@EdsRetroGeekOut Yeah. I know. But it lead to a huge legal mess for He-Man. Ultimately, even if MOTU was a Conan rip off... Mattel had the rights Conan (and derivative works) when MOTU started... so the suit was thrown out.
      Funny enough, they did do a child friendly Conan show in the 90s, that added characters to make it more toyetic. It lead to a second Conan toyline. Though some say Jezmine was created for Conan the Adventurer because of dispute over Red Sonja. For awhile there were legal problems with the character. Marvel said Red Sonja with a J was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. There were enough changes to make her a different character that Howard's Red Sonya. The movie spelled it with a J and reedited Arnie's part so he wasn't Conan. Conan enterprise threatened to take the license away from Marvel if they sued. Then the movie bombed... and they changed their mind saying Sonja with a J was Marvel's Sonya with Y was Howard's... but Marvel and even Thomas and Windsor-Smith.... who would have gotten hefty back royalties from Marvel if they were declared the owner, disagreed. To avoid the whole Sonja/Sonya problem, they created a new character. The mess didn't get resolved until long after Conan the Adventurer was forgotten.

      I think there are three known copies of that playset out there. One is fully painted and has the figures. One is not painted and comes in factory mismatch color samples. Mine is in between the two. a good portion is painted but I have no figures for it

    If you didn't know there's a character called Duke nukem In the Captain Planet show And I think they had problems with that name cause That name was taken by another character It was a video game called Duke nukem And both companies were fighting for that name And I think 3D Was the one that won the rights For the name

    Super Powers: There was a proposed "New Teen Titans" spin off line that included all seven members (well, the five who weren't already made, like Robin and Cyborg) and Titans Tower playset. The main line also had proposed Items like Lois Lane w/DP Copter and Green Lantern's "recharging station" (usual waste of $$ mini-base). Not to mention new characters like Blue Devil, GL John Stewart, and a super-identity for Steve Trevor, along with a four armed crystal character.
    I think toyotter.com has pics posted? I first saw them in Tomart? Wizard's ToyFare basically gave a rundown of Geyer's toyotter site information. Jason may have actually WROTE that article?
    .
    Marvel's Secret Wars had a few plans, too, but that line fell apart and a handful wound up as "European exclusives" like Iceman, Electro, and Hobgoblin.
