Best part of 80s-90s toys was making furniture and mountains out of laundry piles and shoe boxes.
The thing I still like about Castle Grayskull is how many action figure lines me and my brother could use with it as kids (besides He-Man and crew). We'd set it up with GI Joe, Star Wars, and whatever else was on hand. 😀
I think grayskull is the best playset! 🤘
I use to use Snake Mountain like that with the GI Joes
That Captain Planet playset would have been amazing!
Would have loved to see a prototype version 🤓
My only childhood memory of Barnyard Commandos is picking one up, looking at the back of the package, and thinking that both sides can't be the rebels. It bugged me when I was 8 and it still bugs me now.
I get that 🤔👌
Rock lords was one of those toys you would see a commercial of and think cool and then forget
That Planeteer Island playset looks dope as hell! Loved that show as a kid even though I never had the figures, I always wanted Wheeler and the Captain Planet that you could pull the string out of his back and make him fly.
It would have been an awesome playset 🤯👌🤘
Super Powers also had the Fortress of Solitude. I think i remember seeing it at Toys R Us and how it dwarfed the Hall of Justice, one of the few playsets I owned, but everything I found on a Google search said it was never made. The Tower of Darkness was also prominent in the Super Powers third series comic with Orion and Mister Miracle escaping from it. Kirby had dropped out by this point, and Infantino drew it, so it never got reprinted the way the first two did.
The one I most wanted that never came out was the Monster in My Pocket Haunted Mansion. I had only ever seen the box art, but in the past couple of years I saw a photo of the prototype in a catalog online, and it was a repaint of Oh! Jenny's house complete with a doghouse that was far too small for Cerberus. I wrote a screenplay that was over 240 pages based on the Monster in My Pocket comic book when i was in college, and even with the characters being 1-2" high, the logistics of a doll house big enough for each of the crews (in my screenplay, Vampire's team stayed with Jack and Tom Miles in the comics, but Warlock's team stayed with the Raven family--I had wanted Stephen King to play Edgar Raven fully aware of the monsters and as a fictitious character self-deprecating the actor as Uncle Philip claiming he was better than Ben Vereen, who played him, on Webster--then John Weems humored me about reading it before finally saying no to actually reading it) was pretty staggering compared to doll houses I was looking at even at F.A.O. Schwarz that retailed for several hundred dollars.
Love it! Playsets were the holy grails of my youth. And for many lines, they literally were unattainable. I always remembered looking at pictures of the Air Raiders and Gobots playsets, never realizing they were left unmade. You should do a second video exploring those and the awesome Visionaries playset! Continue the good work!!
Visionaries playset i’ve already discussed in the second video of the toy history series 🤘🤓 but those others i didn’t hear about yet thanks for letting me know 🤘🤠
Thanks so much for these great memories loved all these toys from the 80's
Great vid! I would have wanted every single one, lol. The Tower of Darkness & Hope Island playsets would have been awesome! I feel like I had something similar to the Remco Fortress of Doom. It was a playset my grandma got from Montgomery Wards Outlet (I know, I'm old, lol) and it was robotic looking and made from strong cardboard. I remember it had like 2 or 3 levels and then you could place figures on the very top. It had upper sections on the side that stuck out almost like Titans Tower. It might have had guns on those but not sure. I know I played the heck out of it though. Good times!
Awesome 🤓🤘
My playset in the 80's was a leftover pile of sand in the backyard. It was actually really great since I could dig caves and tunnels and build platforms and bridges and break out the garden hose to make rivers and waterfalls. That pile devoured some great toys over the years though.
I remember doing the same thing with my toy soldiera in the sand creating the caves 🤓🙌
The Aliens playset looks awesome.
My couch and bed were my playsets, couldn’t afford them back then :(
I only had the sewer playset but a lot of times i would use the couch and pillows and like a blanket to create a sewer 😅🤘
Cardboard boxes and stacks of books were the best playsets 😁
I'd smash blankets together to make cave systems and such. Had one cheap rock face playset so they worked together.
When I was little, I wanted a TMNT sewer lair playset in the early 90's...but my parents couldn't afford it. So my parents and I took a cardboard box and made a bitchin' awesome one of our own.
I feel ya man, we were deffs a "use your imagination guys" household 😆 so we did! Mega Blocks were the best cause you'd get one set but make hundreds of things out of it.
I always wondered too if the Willow line had planned a Nockmar Castle playset - that would have really filled out the great little line of toys.
Ooh i gotta look into that!
Awesome video! There was an Star Wars playset that also never made it past a sketch from the vintage line before it was cancelled. The Imperial Outpost Playset was huge!
Oooh i gotta take a look into that 🤠🤘
@@EdsRetroGeekOut yeah there was a whole range of cancelled toys and prototypes. Enough for a video... ;)
I totally agree on the rock lords. I got one from a boot fair as a kid but had no idea what it was. It confused me as a kid it would transform and leave ya like "now what?" Keep up the good work Ed your videos are brilliant.
Thanks for watching 🤓👌
I'm a Captain Planet fan and I never knew about the playset, thank u for these amazing videos
Thanks for watching and remember “the power is yours!”
Thats why I love this series I totally had forgot about Barnyard Commandos and prob would never had thought of them ever in life without watching this. I mean ya its not a very important thing to remember but I like to have all my memories intact lol
Thanks for watching 🤓
@@EdsRetroGeekOut well thanks for all the work you do in making all these videos. Fricken love them!
Great video! For 10:00 I always wondered why Dungeons & Dragon's base on the animated TV show didn't offer the original heroes first. I bought "Warduke" I think it's spelled, and a cool figure as a kid, but back then, had to try to have him join my Star Wars figures, since I think only two D&D figures were sold. Could've been a cool set to collect.
Thanks for the video. Very informative stuff, seeing that last Remco playset makes me sad that it never came to be!
Yeah would have loved to display it in my collection maybe someone should recreate it 🤔🤔
It would've been totally frickin' cool if they made the Micro Machines Alien stuff...👌🏼💯✔
Some of it was made I do believe 🤔
Ed's Retro Geek It was. I remember seeing it for sale here in the uk. The (sets?) cost about £5-£7 and consisted of around 2 vehicles 2 big aliens and I think maybe some foot soldiers/aliens.
Definitely miss Galoob and Micro Machines a LOT some times! THeir Trek and Wars ones were amazing still have a few too lol. The ships were even better.
Yeah they released the aliens and they had predator sets as well
OMG, those rock toys, I remember these ... and that Alien set, wow, so cool!
Amazing research, beautiful presentation, even movie references ... What a trip through time. Absolutely lovely show!
Thanks so much buddy 🤠🤘
I did like Rock Lords as a kid. The gold nugget robot is actually really nice. I also had the two-headed evil Rock Lord. So I probably had the best ones, or just the best one gold guy. It’s possible that I would not have liked the extended line if I had gotten a bunch more, though...
Watching these, the main thoght on my mind is how AWESOME my parents were........they literally bought me every single toy I could have ever wanted!!
I was just happy when there was enough snow outside to suit my AT-AT and Snowspeeder 😬
I remember getting the TMNT sewer set for christmas. loved it. i wish I knew half of the things I do know about toy collections because I sold the set at a garage sale
Yikes 🤯
Such an awesome series of videos, Ed. I would love to try my hand at this type of content someday. Keep up the quality work.
Thanks buddy 🤘🤓
Always love seeing toy history stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching 🤘🤓
Ed, you are knocking it out of the part with these videos!
Thanks buddy 🤓🤘
The 4 vehicles produced by Galoob for the _Aliens/Predator_ Action Fleet line (which included the Marine Armored Personnel Carrier, Drop Ship, Narcissus Shuttle, and the Predator ship) are all very rare and sell for big bucks on Ebay. Loose examples sell for $70+ and sealed ones routinely sell for _$100 - $300._ That playset would have been AWESOME. Such a shame Galoob decided not to produce it.
Awesome looking sets 😍
This video showed what opportunities we've missed for the toy lovers and toymakers alike in the '80s and '90s.
Indeed 🤘👌
"The Dragons Graveyard would feature a character that was contemplating to kill their nemesis" I mean if I was stuck in another world for 27 episodes where the majority of the episodes involve the Villain Venger completely fuqing me over to get home and almost killed my unicorn I too would drag him to the dragons graveyard and shank the asshole to death and end my problems. But we all have to be the better person here don't we? And we don't even get a cool D&D play set out of it!
Too bad there wasn't really much of a toyline for the cartoon. I do own 2 of it's "Choose your own Adventure" books though...
Fortress of fangs was still an awesome playset 🤩👌
The Christmas tree became a jungle battle ground for my Ninja Turtles and Shredder's goons. They'd ride on the train at the bottom and get ambushed from the tree branches above.
I love it when xmas trees had trains 🤘🤘
I loved the rock lords as a kid, something about the look got me
I like the later releases with the chrome and the quick action 🤓🤘
Interesting that on the first prototype of the Rock Lords playset, one of the images shows a figure or a Rocklord figure in the mouth of the Skull. Looks like it’s a re-paint of Crackpot, which I believe we never got
Interesting indeed 🤔
Never new about half of these playlets. Great video ED
O man I remember Barn Yard commandos ha. I def had a few
Barn Yard commandos i need some they look cool but did they play well 🤔 🤓
Dude, awesome job! 😎 You surprised me with that second version of Stone Head, i’ve never seen that one before 😳
and i STILL want that robot building from Big! we need a kickstarter for that 😆
🤣 I want one too!
Knowing a bunch of this stuff was never produced just makes me depressed.
It just shows you it was all a big scam to make companies money 🤓
The barnyard toys!!!! My brother and I owned several sheep. What a trip! Thanks
Awesome toyz 🤠🤘
The only kids I knew that owned playsets had drug dealer parents. I could only afford the action figures. I lived in Queens, NY and then Miami in the eighties.
Figurea were also cool 🤓🤘
Loving this series! Are you doing a vehicle one? The things that haunt me as a child seeing pictures of but never getting were Bucky O'Hare's Righteous Indignation, and the more obscure Snailiens' S. Cargo! Keep up the good work!
Vehicles are on the list 🤘🤓
You really do a fantastic job with your throughly entertaining and informative videos!
Thanks Mark 🤓
its a shame they never got around to even design a toxic crusaders play set! =(
Was there a plan for this 🤩🤯
@@EdsRetroGeekOut never I don't think what a shame :(
This was a great video Ed. I love the work you've put into this. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much buddy 🤘🤓
TYSM for these videos ED! I don't know why I have such a big nostalgia drive for old toys, but it's super interesting, especially the unreleased stuff!
I have a tiny collection of prototype plushies, so this sort of stuff is super fun! !
If I have to thank the youtube recommended section for anything, it's leading me to great smaller channels like yours! I feel like your channel will grow a lot :D
Thanks so much 🤓🤘
Thank you Ed for the amazing job you are doing!
Thanks for watching them 🤘🤓
Do you notice there are six indents in the wall of that second Rock Lords playset when it's closed? Each shaped like the original 6 Rock Lords figures in rock form! You could insert each figure into the slot on the wall. Magmar and Boulder's slots are on the shoulders of the castle, on either side of the head. They are literally the angel and devil on the shoulders of Stonehead. 4:18
There is a scene in the Rock Lords movie where one guy hides in the wall of a cave... So clearly this was foreshadowed!
😯🤯 awesome!
Oh man, playsets used to be the ultimate in awesome 😸😸😸👍👍
The Dungeons and Dragons action figure line seemed to be more based on the role playing game. They never made toys of most of the characters from the cartoon series.
The figures then again appealed to the kids watching the show not the roleplay game 🤔
@@EdsRetroGeekOut Not round here, the teens who played D&D bought these and hated the cartoon. I was one of em lol
Exactly, I had Warduke and the knight guy. Also I had one of the dragons. They never made figures from the cartoon that I remember. I would have had them.
What can you do with a rock? Geode: Hold My Beer LOL
🤣🤣 yes!
GREAT CHANNEL AND GREAT REVIEW!! ESPECIALLY THE TOWER OF DARKNESS.......FOR SO MANY YEARS I THOUGHT I HAD IMAGINED SEEING IT ON THE CARDBACKS BUT IT ACTUALLY DID EXIST!! AT LEAST AS A PROTOTYPE
You talking about Rock Lords as a Go-Bots subline and here I am remembering them as a hostile alien lifeform in Transformers Animated.
I don’t think they crossed over 🤔
First time stumbling upon one of your vids.. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Instant subscribe.
Thanks so much 🤓
Barnyard Commandos......man I forgot about that odd but cool designs.
I have to look up what unreleased toys Playmates never released over the near decade they thrived hard on Star Trek
We transformed the rocklords into rocks and rolled them down stairs and stuff. Favorites were nugget and whatever the silver guy was called because... they rolled the best. Fun to transform. Fun to watch friends try to figure it out.
Epic 😄 later releases had more of an automatic transform action
@@EdsRetroGeekOut I may have had some automatic. A square boulder with a mowhawk that threw a boulder. We had the beasts though. They worked with other lines of dinosaur and tmnt because of the size. Dimension X rock monsters
I had the tmnt sewer playset. I wish neca Would do a full scale version
Another fantastic Toy History vid Ed! Loved it! My favorite one was definitely the Super Powers one. Awesome toyline. Shame it got cancelled after only 3 years. Hoping they will re-release them all at some point, just like the recent Real Ghostbusters line and Star Wars Retro Collection and Transformers G1. Speaking of re-releases, maybe another future Toy History Video? :)
Already looking forward to the next one! :)
It would be a cool topic cuz some unreleased and recalled toys have now been popped into production🤘🤓
Mattel's Scott Nutlich was such a SP stan, he made sure the DCUC line included EVERY character from Super Powers and SuperFriends. That's why the line crashed and burned.
Hey Ed great video👍👍 looking forward to another😁😁
I loved Rock Lords so much! Don't ask me why. Just a lot of good memories attached to them, I suppose. Those and Battle Beasts were pretty big favorites in my house.
Battle Beasts 😍😍😍
Dude that Alien Micro Machine set would of been amazing!
It looked nice with the alien eggs 😍
Thank you for reminding me of Barnyard Commandos!
They’re so simple but the headsculpting looks cool tough 🤣
This was so much fun! 👍🏻
Imagine now someone somewhere out there to own those prototypes of unreleased toy sets,he will probably doesn't know he sits in a freaking goldmine i believe! But the fact is that those rot in some basement from the companies that surely won't exist any longer,or in the hands of employees,or their kids worked in those places and as i mentioned don't know that they had those!
I need me an employee phonebook 😅 can I come and empty your attic sir
Thank you for sharing! It's always fun to learn about new things, especially toys that never came to be.
Thanks for watching 🤘🤓
These are really fkn awesome videos. I think TOY HISTORY
are my favourite
Thanks Lance 🤠 bring back the toy time machine!!!
I have a Valkeer Test shot from that Unproduced playset photo.
😍 awesome!
This is a really interesting video! I know, there were also some my little ponies, which were announced and shown in advertising brochures, but de facto never produced.
You have a cool collection! 🤘🤠
Ed's Retro Geek Out Thank you ❤️🌈😘
I stumbled upon your channel and content... I binged on all your videos Awesome videos... keep up the good work...
Thanks so much 🤓
At least Alien is getting new Neca figures as well as Kenner versions. And who knows, maybe we will get more Super 7 inspired Alien/ Aliens playsets. We just got a bunch of new Marines, Ripley and Newt in the Reaction line.
Neca 😍🤩👌
Another good video ED and more than 10k subscribers 😲🎉🎊🍾well done sr 🤘🏼
Thanks buddy 🤓🤘
My biggest playset was the Thunderbirds island, so many fun memories :) love this video, keep up the good work ;)
Thanks for watching 🤘🤓
Wow 😀 Congrats to 10 K Subs and keep up the good work greetings Fox
Thanks buddy 🤘🤓
Their were plans for the castle doom for the voltron line also silverhawks hawk heaven playset
Oooh thanks for letting me know 🤘🤠
Man i would have loved to have that Captain Planet playset as a kid!
Another great vid Ed....quality work mate 👍
Thank you 🤓
Great video man. Love this series. Very interesting to see what could have been. Also, good old playmates and their constant recycling of tmnt parts lol.
Indeed 🤣🤘
Cool mate looking forward to the next awesome vid. Greetz Dre
Thanks buddy 🤘
My mom told me she couldn't find that Darkseid headquarters and I thought she was lying. I guess I was wrong!
It looked like a cool set tough 🤓
Lol that would be a great conversation
"Hey Ma guess what, after 40 years YOU WERE RIGHT!!! YOUR WERE ALWAYS RIIIIGHT....
Nice tidbits, great content. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 🤘🤓
I'm loving this toy history series
Thanks buddy 🤘🤓
That Alien set would have been amazing. But like my high school girlfriend, it doesn't exist!
🤣🤣🤣
Why doesn’t Jessica Nuwmeyer love me
Playset are awesome everline needs one or more so it's a shame to not make them
Great video! The Darkseid play-set looked awesome!
It did have a really cool vibe around it
Rock Lords were so cool I had a couple I used to use them as guards to my castle greyskull 👍😎
That’s an awesome idea 🤠🤘
Ha! Assuming you did this when Rock Lords came out (86/87), you beat MOTU's own Stonedar and Rockon to the punch!
Discovered your channel through IconicCon, subbed, been checking out your content and I've forwarded your videos to my brother Kevyn
Thanks 🤓
Lost of World of Warlord isn't a He-Man knock off as he first appearred in DC Comics in 1975. Conan goes back to the 1930s. Mattel was going to make Conan toys but changed their mind last minute and decided to do something slightly less violent. Now, Remco using those licenses might have been a He-Man cash ins but they characters were not. If anything, He-Man is a Conan knock off with some elements of Superman thrown in.
Its a lot more complicated than that 😅
@@EdsRetroGeekOut Yeah. I know. But it lead to a huge legal mess for He-Man. Ultimately, even if MOTU was a Conan rip off... Mattel had the rights Conan (and derivative works) when MOTU started... so the suit was thrown out.
Funny enough, they did do a child friendly Conan show in the 90s, that added characters to make it more toyetic. It lead to a second Conan toyline. Though some say Jezmine was created for Conan the Adventurer because of dispute over Red Sonja. For awhile there were legal problems with the character. Marvel said Red Sonja with a J was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. There were enough changes to make her a different character that Howard's Red Sonya. The movie spelled it with a J and reedited Arnie's part so he wasn't Conan. Conan enterprise threatened to take the license away from Marvel if they sued. Then the movie bombed... and they changed their mind saying Sonja with a J was Marvel's Sonya with Y was Howard's... but Marvel and even Thomas and Windsor-Smith.... who would have gotten hefty back royalties from Marvel if they were declared the owner, disagreed. To avoid the whole Sonja/Sonya problem, they created a new character. The mess didn't get resolved until long after Conan the Adventurer was forgotten.
Pretty rad to find this video. I have that Aliens playset and the action fleet Jordan family crawler.
I think there are three known copies of that playset out there. One is fully painted and has the figures. One is not painted and comes in factory mismatch color samples. Mine is in between the two. a good portion is painted but I have no figures for it
Woah awesome any chance you could send me some pictures of your prototype copy? 🤓🤘
@@EdsRetroGeekOut Yup, getting them ready to take some pictures. Email them to your contact email?
@@EdsRetroGeekOut and sent
If you didn't know there's a character called Duke nukem In the Captain Planet show And I think they had problems with that name cause That name was taken by another character It was a video game called Duke nukem And both companies were fighting for that name And I think 3D Was the one that won the rights For the name
Amazing !!!
Thanks buddy
I don’t think many people were clamoring for a Captain Planet playset.
I would have wanted it I loved that show used to watch it right after rescue rangers then gijoe and rambo the animated series would play 🤩 please send me back to 1992!
Great channel and content, you deserved lot and lots of subscribers and views! I’m here to stay! Keep the good work
Thanks so much for watching 🤓👌
Cool!
Thanks 🤓👌
Ed,this was a time warp...also, subscribed!:-)
Thanks so much 🤘🤓
@@EdsRetroGeekOut No prob dude!keep up the great work!🤗
Nice vid bud...very informative those play sets would of been cool to have.
Thanks for watching 🤓👌
Ed's Retro Geek Out 10k congrats man...your a down to earth guy it seems like with a good personality. I enjoy the show cheers to you bro
Super Powers: There was a proposed "New Teen Titans" spin off line that included all seven members (well, the five who weren't already made, like Robin and Cyborg) and Titans Tower playset. The main line also had proposed Items like Lois Lane w/DP Copter and Green Lantern's "recharging station" (usual waste of $$ mini-base). Not to mention new characters like Blue Devil, GL John Stewart, and a super-identity for Steve Trevor, along with a four armed crystal character.
I think toyotter.com has pics posted? I first saw them in Tomart? Wizard's ToyFare basically gave a rundown of Geyer's toyotter site information. Jason may have actually WROTE that article?
.
Marvel's Secret Wars had a few plans, too, but that line fell apart and a handful wound up as "European exclusives" like Iceman, Electro, and Hobgoblin.
I actually have that alien set in my possession. It was released. I have a predator and terminator play set still in the box as well. Bought them off eBay a few years ago. Maybe I have something valuable on my hands. Who knows.
Don't forget the Refrigerator Playset from the Food Fighters.... 👍
I wont 😏🤠
Hey Ed, have you included the unproduced Creepy Crawlers playset in any of these? I can’t find anything about it, other than a brief mention in a Toy Galaxy video. Would love to see it, I love those toys!
Haven’t seen anything about that yet apart from it being mentioned there
You missed a playset there was due to be a gobots HQ playset pictured in catalogue. I’ve read they produced but no example are online. Keep up the great vids.
Ooh i’ll check that out! 🤘🤓
