  • Flute dynamics can be difficult but today we look at how to play loud and soft on the flute. These are some of my favorite tips and approaches to playing louder (Forte) and softer (piano) on the flute and moving between the two (crescendos and Descrescendos).
Flute practice can be so much fun but often we spend time just playing the music instead of focusing on specific techniques and practicing the things we struggle the most with! I have a bit of fun with this bad practice habit of ours, but if we pay more attention to the things we don't enjoy we will be able to get better at the flute.

I studied many physics of flute as we know the sound is a mechanical energy when we have more energy in sound we hear it loudly and what is the mechanical energy formula? 1/2mvv so if we use more air that refer to (m) in formula and when we use more air speed we increase energy too so we have two factors speed of air and more air but when we use more speed it can cause us to get harmonics so donot you think its better for us to we use small aperture to blow less air?

Soft playing. I can only play Forte and when try playing softer, it's airy and when I try playing fortissimo forte, it sounds too aggressive

I really love how you simplify these techniques for me to use! And this is coming from someone who just got started at the ripe old age of 41.

For 10 years I played the flute and never changed my embouchure. I always used to squeeze the notes out which worked really well in some situations but worked terribly in others. I was often out of tune even being first flute for the high school level national orchestra in my country. But over the past few years I've come to realize that I actually have to adjust my embouchure when I'm changing registers! I had to teach myself this very pitch changing exercise and learn to play with a neutral flexible embouchure with no tension (or at least the right kind of tension). Then doing etudes really helped, particularly in regards to flexibility. They taught me in a fun way how to do arpeggiated/jumpy intervals and place the notes immediately with fairly good tuning and tone. Especially Koehler's etudes such as No. 9 of 25 Romantic Studies for flute (Octaves). And scales of all sorts were also a great exercise to teach me what the embouchure feels like as I progress through the entire range of the flute. I remember being unable to play the lowest and highest notes on the flute while doing scales for the longest time because I just did not adjust my embouchure. And now I'm finally starting to understand how it works and getting consistency with my tone. Now I feel like I'm ready to learn how to adjust my embouchure to accommodate the entire range of dynamics because I've mainly been learning on mezzo forte. I feel like I'm on the cusp of consistently playing high notes softly and without any airiness. I just don't know how to play loud without going sharp and airy.

The second octave 'A' pitch is the one to practice playing with full body and without being loud. Most internet flute gurus wont tell you this unless you are paying them for a private lesson. But if you Master blowing A2 without going deaf you're making great progress.
