Post Op instructions, after you transfer from PACU to floor or discharge home,
First 24 hours:
Assessment; vital sings, L.O.C, C.M.S, and incisions site for any bleeding every 2hours, specially bleeding , patient dies from hypovolemic shock.
Perform lung exercise, cough and deep breathing, use a pillow for split. use SI as instructed. Must voids within 8 hrs of surgery, need to sit up at the adage of the bed unless contraindicated, put on extra blankets, your thermoregulators not yet kick
After 24 hours,
Assessment, patient is stable v/s q 4-6 hrs
first dressing will be changed by surgeon or might be instructed to do so.
** wash hand and put gloves before touching the surgical site. infection is the most things you have to worry about.
s/s of infection ,redness, sit hot compare to other part of the body drainage with odors. present of small swelling and mild pain is expected apply ice for 10 min.
Leave steri strips in place. Shows after 2days is OK. You have to be up sitting in a chair and ambulating in you room by now.
Complications:
Pain and swelling of legs sings of DVT.
Difficulty of breathing sings of PE.
Surgical site dehiscence.
Food, start with soup and crackers advance as tolerated,
Exercise, don't drive for a week or after taking pain killers. Don't left heavy object, don't perform intensive exercise
Medication, can resume all home medication as instructed by your doctor, special attention on aspirins ,blood thinner.
Constipation, expected do you to less activity and being on pain medication, drink plenty of water, consume more fiber, exercise and talk to your doctor.
