    Sad for me to say this today, but it takes a special type of person to not only admit they are wrong, but to identify exactly where, in detail, they were wrong, and provide proof that substantiates the other side's claim of how they were wrong. I appreciate this video for nothing more than that. I stumbled on this video, wanted to see what the deal was, got surprised, and I'm here to stay.

    It is refreshing to have someone come back and admit they were wrong. I wanted to rage, but there were so many people after the SE dropped saying the same thing that I just dismissed it as misinformed. In the UI forums it is pretty frustrating too when people act like you can't use that switch. Throw in a few flex cameras, a hue hub, a caseta main repeater, etc. on that switch and it will work just fine as a perfect PoE switch solution, never saturating the switch bandwidth or uplink for that matter.

    I appreciate you coming back and admitting you were wrong. I know my video was posted publicly, but I would have appreciated a heads up that you were going to use it and talk over it. It wasn’t 100% clear that it was my video as the way you talked over it, it sounded like it was you doing the testing. Other than that, I do agree with your other gripes about the UDMPro, forcing network and SSO is a bit frustrating for clients and even for us as managed service providers. I would like to be able to configure the device no matter where I am. Including without a current internet connection…
    Also, you didn’t butcher my last name like everyone else lol. Thanks
    Edit1: I now see your description where you posted the link to my video.

      It bottlenecks at either 1 or 2.5 depending on which revision of the UDM pro you have. They quietly updated it shortly after it’s release.

  • @sdwinrow

    So, when we talk about the switch backplane capacity, this refers to the maximum throughput when the switch is fully in use. As such, begs the questions;
    a) What is the maximum throughput on the UDMpro/UDMproSE, when the switch is fully in use?
    b) Does the WAN port form part of the switch backplane ‘fabric’?
    Cheers :)

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  Před 3 lety

      The switch can do full gigabit between all of the gigabit switch ports. It can do 2.5gb to the cpu (ie. connecting it to the router)

  • @ioxmedia
    @ioxmedia Před 2 lety

    I noticed on the UDM-PRO it was 1Gb/s uplink but looking at the block diagram it is 2.5Gb/s on Rev3.1 between the switch chip and the CPU. Does anyone have information on the UDM-SE as to what revision and if it is 1Gb or 2.5 uplink?

  • @jaydmorales23

      1gb port to port. 2.5gb all switch ports to the built in router. Except for the 10gb sfp+ ports.

      it's basically a 8 port switch chip inside the udm pro,and it's basic job is doing at least 16 gig backplane 8gig uplink and 8 gig downlink between all 8 ports.for a 8 port switch, its a easy job nowadays.

  • @MaxRabin
    @MaxRabin Před 3 lety

    You mentioned that UDM Pro's newer revisions have a 2.5GB Backplane. How can I check if mine is 1 or 2.5? (other than testing it, I want to know from model # or in the UI)
    Thanks!

    • @GeekGarageDK
      @GeekGarageDK Před 3 lety

      The UDM Pro (not the SE) is 1Gb/s uplink, the only UDM Pro that had 2.5Gb/s uplink was the Early Access revision 3.1 but it also had the SPF ports linked in speed, so if one only ran 1Gb/s then the other was locked to the same speed.
      I hope we soon get info about the uplink speed of the UDM Pro SE

    Now how about the udm se? I read that all the speed is divided between the eight ports, kind of like you thought with the udm pro. I don't know what to read anymore. Reddit is becoming the new Craigslist lol.

  • @richardmoore5674
    @richardmoore5674 Před 3 lety

    I feel this is still wrong, or at least incomplete. Testing 4 ports is not enought to say that all ports have gigabit throughput. There are switches (though less common now) that when you fill up the ports and try to send 1 gb across all, that where they show the issues

  • @mylinuxstruggle5495
    @mylinuxstruggle5495 Před 3 lety

    So now I have a question. We have established concretely the 1 GB port on the back plate of the switch. My question is now. How are people achieving 1.2 gigs speed wired on UDM pro standard edition

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  Před 3 lety

      My guess would be the bits vs bytes conversion...

    • @toddfennell9293
      @toddfennell9293 Před 3 lety +5

      They are using the SFP+ WAN port and forcing it to connect at 2.5GigE to a compatible 2.5GigE modem. Then they are able to get ~1.2Gbps download speeds. This is usually done with Comcast and Spectrum internet over coax cable. These providers overprovision by 20% to make sure the customer gets their rated speed to reduce complaints of not getting what they are paying for (and other reasons). It is not possible to get more than 1Gbps if using the 1Gbps WAN port or by using the built in switch. You would have to use the SFP+ ports for both LAN and WAN.

  • @bizzfo
    @bizzfo Před 3 lety

    The biggest issue with the UDM Pro is that it cannot act as a controller for other networks / network locations. I have a company with 9 locations across the country, and basically if I want to upgrade and use Unifi Video, I have to upgrade all locations with their own UDM Pro. And thus, I will have to manually manage 9 configurations whereas before I could have one configuration with just 9 locations.
    Also, getting VPN setup between these locations is now.... well.... why use unifi? You have to do everything manually again. For professional network engineers no big deal probably. But managing my own company I feel Ubiquiti left me hanging. I'm stuck with all this old unifi gear, and cannot seem to be able to upgrade to video and access control without seriously damaging the functionality I already have.

    • @bassman87
      @bassman87 Před 3 lety +2

      If you have a company that has 9 locations you really should have them look at enterprise level gear. Ubiquiti really doesn't work well at scale, and the UDM pro can't do any high availability, something that is considered a basic requirement for enterprise level gear.

    Unifi is like the Apple of networking.. OooOo pretty.. colorful interface.. OOoO Ahhhaha... But.. Oh.. You're not gonna permit me to this.. Oh you're not gonna permit me to do that either.. Oh you've released a controller update where you killed off the features that I was using.. Oh you totally killed off support for a device... No thank you.. Been down the unifi path, been burned, won't trust them again. Offloaded my entire rack back to amazon at a loss and replaced it all with Mikrotik gear. The only piece of unifi gear I kept was the pro ap, but.. unifi's control over it had to go.. Trashed their firmware and tftp flashed openwrt. I control my devices now.... Not some corp pinhead at Ubiquiti. Same way with Cisco Meraki.. Stay away from that hot garbage too.
