House's new patient is Ezra Powell (Joel Grey), a renowned medical research pioneer who collapses in his lab. House puts Ezra through diagnostic rigors, but the team is unable to come up with a conclusive diagnosis and Ezra's health continues to deteriorate. Ezra ultimately demands the team help him end his life, but each member has divergent opinions on the morality of helping Ezra die, especially since the possibility of a cure is still in question. Meanwhile, Ali (Leighton Meester), the teenage daughter of a clinic patient, has developed a disturbing crush on House.

Ever wonder what House's first day as a doctor was like?
Always
Would love to see short mini series of young House.
House was normal in the past. He changed because of his leg problem. His leg makes him feel lots of pain all the time. If he gets the pain to stop, he suddenly gets dumbier.
@@couldYouEverIgnore "dumbier" And the chronic pain only made house meaner, he's always been a sarcastic genius, the one episode even mentions him being that way in med school.
@@Blewlongmun True....It's funny how Geniuses are barely able to tolerate being around anyone they know to have a lower IQ then themselves. Although they come off as sarcastic, arrogant asses, they are often very lonely and depressed individuals because they meet so few people who can comprehend the world in a similar manner, and who can comprehend them. Many commit suicide unfortunately, because many people consider Geniuses to actually be Crazy simply because they aren't intelligent enough to know that Geniuses are actually Geniuses. Sad really.
An important scene is missing. When Cameron cries and House tells her that he is proud of her. Powerful moment.

"Congratulations. You got your answer"....----. A real tear jerker moment
The man gets House..
Shri Ninja - The gambler beat the House.
House admires him. It's one of those rare moments when House sits down and be 'human' because he feels something for Ezra Powell.
Because House understands pain. He knows why the man wants to die.
I always thought the REAL tearjerker was when it turns out that Cameron actually euthanised the guy. During the episode she went from admiration to deepseated disdain to tormented angel and it really shows how they setup her character as always falling for those she cannot save. When House confronts her with it there's a moment where you see that, in doing so, she gained a measure of respect from him for doing what he was unable to but at the same time the pitty he feels for her for being that hopeless romantic.
Big-time
House also gave him what he wanted .

The part where House tells Cameron “I’m proud of you” is essential.
I am not sure. I didn't see the full episode, and i had that intuition it could be her decision. I didn't need to be ''said black on white''. I like it when i am being left with interrogation marks. Just as Cuddy is. I think the choice of editing that out and leaving it at House saying '' if i knew something, would you want to know ? '' to cuddy, is more interesting. It's a very interesting dialogue as well. The acting is excellent. _ furthemore, i find the intimist ritual of the lifeless body taken care of + the song, is the climax. Very meditative and respectful. That life is not about Cameron, it is about him, the patient. I have found it's a very sensible choice. Leaving us on that, wlth that resonnance and the soothing and intriguing song. I feel it's a beautiful hommage to the memory of that interesting man we got to meet. It's also wondeful to be allowed to witness such an intimate moment. _ It really is a touching scene. And a very real and beautiful transition, real in an helpful way, to me at least. _ But i am glad you mentionned that scene between Cameron and House, now i want to see the full episode.

Most of the first 2 seasons patients were really good actors in the acting sick spectrum. Ezra was an incredible character. A resistant patient with his own motives - but NOT antagonistic like so many other patients (resisting treatment because... it keeps the show going). And even though House convinces him to a certain extent... he still gets his wish, and greets death gracefully, teaching a few lessons along the way.
Also: House implicitly taking the blame in Cameron's place without skipping a beat is hugely admirable.
Man, what did the writers of this show work on after House ended? Such a masterpiece
David Shore, the creator, developed the American adaptation of a Korean drama called "The Good Doctor"...the medicine part is okay, but the characters are no way near the level of emotional complexity House's characters were at.

After witnessing these scenes for the first time; seeing the docs faces when they discovered it was type AA then delivering the news, was just extremely sad. Beautiful
I love the Wizard of Oz reference given that this is Joel Grey, the man who played the Wizard in the original Broadway production of Wicked. This guy is a legend in the world of theatre. I had the pleasure of performing with him and Bernadette Peters as part of their big band during a charity performance in Florida. He is an absolute treasure.
I knew he looked familiar. My references are more, "Cabaret," and his daughter's work, though.
6:13 House smiled after telling it's terminal then after a few seconds he came to the realization he's smiling, which is fucked up. Something similar happened to me, I told a dear friend of mine condolence while smiling then I realized I was doing that, I felt horrible immediately and I just left.
I've always had somewhat of an issue with Cameron's moral judgments. She vows to treat everyone with respect and dignity, respecting their legal rights until she find that their morals are unaligned with hers. If she stood for helping people, as long as the good morals outweigh the bad, then I would agree with her methods. But here she ripped off his skin because he irritated her morals. House has his Puzzles, Foreman has his obsession of self-improvement, Chase has his enjoyment of challenges, but Cameron's morals swing back and forth on procedural, legal, and moral. Her hypocrisy is why she's an interesting character and i wouldn't have it any other way, but it still irks me
@randomguy9777 there's a theory that house's 3 stooges are representative of the Id, ego and superego. Chase is obviously the ego mirroring house, he's the least resistant to house's methodologies, Foreman is the super ego mirroring cuddy, he takes on the role of dean of medicine after her and is the most cautious of the three. Cameron is the id, she's a brilliant doctor but her emotionality does seem to effect her rationality, cons are that she relates to patients and can act as the middle ground to get consent from parents etc and acts as a source of comfort for some patients, she mirrors wilson (he had an affair while still married and dated that one cancer patient). I had the thought that Cameron was the super ego instead of foreman because of the whole "need to be holier than thou" Attitude but you kinda realize that she's a very impulse driven doctor, as in she "needs" To feel like she is morally superior and good.
A lot of people see ethics and morality as this codified thing that you can lable measure and stick a pin in. Its not people are often hypocritical on the most fundamental level when presented with even the most basic moral questions. She can justify it to herself that this person betrayed the ethics of medicine and did harm to other's without their consent to futher his research. Why should she treat him better? She justifys her own actions by using his ethical framework.
She was just making a point by treating him like he treated others. Not switching religions or something. You treat good person like a good person, you treat jerk like a jerk. Moral has a little something to do with it.
When Chase kills Dibala and decides to not turn himself in, she talks about how House "ruined" him. But she was sandbagging during the DDX sessions because she didn't want to save him.
What Chase did was to go with the 49% option on a 51/49 split. That's less egregious than Cameron being assigned to the case and deliberately not even trying to figure out what was wrong with him.
@@GaimeGuy Absolutely! Chase made a terribly conflicting moral decision, but at least he kept to his own ideals. Cameron talks about compassions and what everyone deserves, but the moment she finds a personal issue with someone she completely gives up on trying to help them, not just keeping from doing anything extra for them but flat out just going against helping them. This actor playing the patient is fantastic. It really seemed like he was having a trach tube removed.
I know. Felt so bad for the poor man.
It’s always interesting, house enjoys the puzzle and almost strictly does his job for that reason. But he never is the same when he thinks or knows a patient is going to die throughout the show, it bothers him a little, and considering in later episodes where he actually starts to show some compassion it’s plausible to believe that he cares a lot more then he will let himself believe.
Self-centered narcissism and anti-social personality aside, he's still a doctor. He still believes in the Hippocratic Oath and to give his patient the best care that he possibly can, even if his methods are unconventional and even maverick at times.
Hands down one of Cameron's best episodes! Backbone! Finally!
This is my favorite episode of the show and I'm only just realizing that "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" was probably added as a nod to Joel Grey's stint as the Wizard of Oz.

My Grandfather near the end of his life was suffering from heart failure. His heart wasn't strong enough to pump blood properly to his brain, and was causing him to suffer dementia like symptoms. There were points in time however where he became more cognizant, and all he would ask was "Why am I still here, I don't want to be here anymore," and say "I just want to die."
When he was aware, and could see what his life had become; being kept alive by machines and hoses, he knew he didn't want this. The Doctor told my Mother: "Listen to me very carefully. As I neared the end, I somehow just knew that was likely to happen, unfortunate to be right. There's a lot to love about this channel, but it's not the first time whoever is putting the edits together that a wonderful, powerful moment winds up being omitted needlessly (especially when an assembly ends so soon before the given moment would feature).
@@a.ham.9856 yea. And then she goes and leaves Chase for Killing D'bala, true she just helped a terminal patient end his suffering and Chasd actively killed D'Bala to save thousands of lives. The whole thing is ridiculous, both of them did what they did to help, in a very human way, yet she couldn't get over it even though she took a life as well, and the way the series portrayed her ideals means that she would equate euthanization to another because the end result is a patient's death. I thought it was great though, because I was really annoyed with her character by that point, she added basically zero to the team, just drama and whining.
This is possibly one of the most moving episodes in the entire series.
This was the episode that got me watching the show. I'll never forget the perfect choice of Mazzy Star's song Into Dust with the scene of Joel Grey's character's death. Wrong! They all understood house, especially Cameron. The problem is they don’t have House’s obsession for the absolute answer. Cameron realizes House’s obsession for keeping the dead man alive just to find the answer, but she sees it as a torture and inhumane, so she refuses to be a part of it.
Gutwrenching Sadness & Everyone,Especially Our Patient,Was Brilliant As Usual.I've seen other medical dramas, but HOUSE really gets me going emotionally !!!
I realize Dr. House and Dexter Morgan work in two different fields, but I'd still like to see them tackle a case together.
throw sherlock holmes in there too
House is not a murderer with violent impulses though. And he still has emotions. Not all grumpy men are real sociopaths lmao.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 well dexter killed bad people so it makes up for it
At the moment when the nurse pulls the sheet over his head, I felt really sad. Good show from Joel Grey. It's shocking to see him so old ; just "a few years ago" I was watching him on Cabaret ! It doesn't seem so long . I never feel the time until I see someone else who was "back there" and they've gotten so old or they die .
What gets me is that he died all alone. No one next to him to comfort him in his last few seconds. Just waiting to die. 😢
The closing song is Into Dust by Mazzy Star. Bizarre to think that I became almost obsessed with that song at the time when my wife had just been diagnosed with amyloidosis and I was told she had maybe only a few years to live. However she is in remission now, a miracle of sorts..
Damn I always watched house MD dubbed to my language and now I discovered these videos and can't believe my ears how strong Case's accent is (as it was not replicated in the dubbing)
Like "type aey-aey" strong
Same happened to me when I first discovered them.
Strange that it took such an unleashed doctor as this to get a real smile from House.
are we not even going to talk about how this
is JOEL GREY the iconic actor???
The sond at the end always gets me chills. Mazzy Star - Into Dust
It always has something to do with amyloidosis
My dad had amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, renal failure and lost the ability to speak after the first dose of radiation burned his vocal cords, it could have been caught 6 months earlier but the doctor didn't care enough to look at his charts!
Always ask for your test results a 3 year old could see there was something wrong with his potassium levels at 180%
Did anyone notice the title of this video, the capitalization of A&A letter in When 'A' patient 'A'sks to Die as in it was amyloidosis subtype : AA..the answer was in the title already, and that's the level of work and effort is put behind this show by its creators.
I like how these clips are uploaded after Paramount airs the same full ep aha
U r without a shadow of a doubt very gorgeous
House is the only show that you can enjoy without knowing half of what’s actually happening
That guy somehow manages to have a smile that is both, the sweetest and the most disturbing.
"Informed consent holds back. Patients' rights. Hold backs research."
Pretty sure Mengele said the same thing
nine minutes of clips and I can tell that Joel Grey gave one Hellova performance.
It's funny - last time I saw that actor, he was also 'looking to die' in the prison drama, Oz.
