If you have 4wd. You can still do this but use much less grease. Too much grease would squish out and go into joining the transfer case oil. The transfer case on the GM/Chev trucks have clutch plates in them. The excess grease can affect the grip of the Tcase clutch pack and may cause it to slip and wear out sooner.
On a 4wd the splines are lubed by the oil in the Tcase. Sometimes a little grease helps if it is knotchy. Just don’t put a lot. Hope that helps!
Great video btw.
Thanks for the video. Lots of detail and you put it in English so we can understand whats going on because some of these guys over complicate it like surgery.
Great video! Great explanation and video quality. My gf bought a Suburban with 200k miles, and I’m pretty sure this will take care of the issue.
Thanks!! Hope it works for you!
Great video. Having the same issue on my lifted silverado and always thought I had bolts loose or something on my blocks.
Thanks for the comment! Hope the video helped!
Great video! Have to do a lot of my repairs because of financial resources! I can do this and it will help diagnose a couple of other problems
Fantastic! Hope it helps! Thanks!
Best video on CZcams about this
Thanks for the comment!
Great informational video 👍
❤ great video, thanks for the advice
Good video, very helpful. Thanks.
Hope it helped. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks. Will try this next weekend
Good luck. Hope it helps!
Amazing thankyou for in depth information! I have the same problem ( or so I think) Clunk when the transmission downshifts to a complete stop -- No other symptoms on my 1973 HQ Holden 1 Tonner. I am going to give this a go!
great mechanic, I wish this guy was my neighbor !
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you. I need to do this to my ‘04 Silverado. Every time I don’t know how to do something, I just go to CZcams.
Thanks Dennis! CZcams can be a great source for assistance. Good luck!
I did it and it worked, no more clunking.
Thanks you just solve my drive shaft problem
Glad it helped! Thanks!
Only video i could find that hit my symptoms on the head. I was worried my 2013 yukon was lossing a pinion or something but i have high hopes no.
Hey Dave: I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 8 Speed Transmission, 7775 Miles on it. My Torque Converter has been slipping at 25 mph and again 52 mph. I Just had the Transmission Flushed with over 20 Qts. of new fluid by a GMC Dealership, under the Drive Train Warranty. I have been noticing the Rear End clunk when Slowing to a Stop. This has been going on for a couple of years, but now I am more aware of the Clunk. Torque Converter seems better now, but I plan on going back to the GMC dealership and asking them to Service the Clunk. Hopefully they will have a TSB on this and do same as you have do here. On the Torque Converter Service, I went to my Chevrolet Service Department, they were going to do the same flush, BUT CHARGE me $600.00 to $800.00 for the job. It just so happens that we know a the Service Manager at the GMC Dealership, he checked into this and said the Flush was part of the Drive Train Warranty. Hope all this works for the Clunk, man it's ugly at times.
Hope it solves your issues. Sometimes the simplest things are the fix. Good luck and thanks for the comment!
Thanks! My 02 silverado 2500hd (8.1 w/ Allison) does clunk at acceleration from standing start, more so when warmed up. I can mitigate the thunk by feathering the gas when accelerating. Hopefully this does the trick.
Do you have 2 piece drive line ? If so grease the bearing that holds the 2 drive lines together find the greaser port and pump some in there I had the same problem but not no more
Can you also use wheel bearing greese for this too? I have a 2000 silverado and it seems likes ever since I did 3" coil spacers up front and 2.5" blocks in the rear I have had this slip going on. Searched forever on it and this is the 1st video that I found helpful! Could a small lift like mine cause the no sound clunking, I just feel it.
Not sure if wheel bearing grease is thick enough to stay on splines for an extended period. Might work. The lift can put a bind on u-joints and could be part of the problem. Not sure what the solution would be, but lubing the splines may help especially if they are dry now. Good luck!
just bought a ‘99 Sierra… gonna try this 👍
Hope it helps! Thanks for the comment!
Sounds weird that it moves because it’s dry. You would think if it was lubed it would move more. Awesome video. I can’t wait to do this to mine. It’s been bugging me
The grease basically gets in the way and holds it in place if thatakes sense.
It is suppose to move as the rear axle articulates. The grease helps the splines to slide smoothly and quietly. If dry, the steel on steel splines get sticky and clunky.
Thank You! I have this same problem. When I accelerate it will clunk. If I ease into acceleration I can prevent the clunk. I have been putting this off because I didn't know how big of a job it would be. But, thanks to you, Seems pretty easy.
Hope it helps! Thanks!
@@davelowe1963 Same issue with my Land Cruiser 2006. Just put the front drive shaft back in (previous owner had it removed) and when I accelerate it clunks. Will have it greased up. Good video
@@immoazzam Thanks! Good luck!
Same with my 05 2500HD duramax
Thank you for this video I always thought it was my transmission what you described and showed is exactly the problem my Yukon 2005 GMC sounds like and does ever time I brake it sounds like something clicks or hits like a clunk sounds .
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Thank you
high temp red grease from walmart does the job well!!!
Cool!
Det var til god hjelp 😊
If I have a rear seal on my transmission that is leaking fluid will that break down the grease that’s in the pilot shaft?
Will this work on a f250?same procedure
I hear the clunk when I stop and go but also when my suburban shifts. My transmission has been rebuilt and runs great. So I don’t think its the issue. But is that the same thing? 2001 Chevy Suburban.
Did you try this and did it resolve your issue
I got a Chevy 2005 2500 HD it vibrates like crazy when I go into a pot hole so it vibrates pretty crazy a death wobble I think I it’s called well it only stops vibrating and back to normal if I go into another pothole or if I I slow down to like 20 or 30 mph any ideas of what it might be?? Will this method work or any other?? Thank you and great video sir
Mine does the same thing try driving it in m5 then it don’t shake
I'm going to try this tomorrow. I have a 04 Tacoma and it clunks whenever if shifts from 1st to 2nd gear and when I'm stopping. Also the truck twists a little hard from left to right when changing gears like Drive and Reverse. Hopefully it fixes the issue.
Hope it helps. Good luck!
You can use a torque wrench with an extension and a u joint adapter?
Yup
I also heard you can’t grease the yokes on 4x4’s because it will ruin the transmission fluid?
So my 07 gmc sierra automatic i cant grease? Other than a ring and pinion adjustment, what else can i do?
My 07 tundra 4.7L has a slight bump instantly when i left off the brakes from a complete stop and I’m thinking it’s the slip yoke. I also have a very mild vibration between 50-70 mph, i thought it was my cheap tires but since it’s doesn’t happen every time im thinking it’s related to the slip yoke being dry. Going to try to grease it first.
Im not sure but i think toyota's drive shalf yoke is lubricant by the transmission fluid and not grease. I'd think twice b4 stuffing grease into there
Hey buddy, great video. My 4 runner is doing the same thing and more. It actually has a loud buzzing humming noise once I go over 40mph. Is that the problem with rear wheel bearing/seals ?
Humming/roaring noise many times is the rear differential. Not sure about wheel bearings. Maybe raise rear wheels off the ground and spin them by hand to see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise. Good luck. Thanks.
@@davelowe1963 I don’t know why I said wheel bearings, I meant pinion bearings. Looks like at least the outer one is bad. That’s what I am hoping that it wouldn’t be the inner one
Got it. Hope it works out well for you.
@@davelowe1963 thank you
My mechanic refuses to do this for me. Time for a new mechanic. Thanks for the help though.
Good luck. Thanks!
Is it possible to install a grease zerk on the spline? I have to clean and re-grease this part every 3-6 months and it is a pain.
I have seen videos of people doing it, but I never have, so not sure how well it works. The grease I mention in the video is super tacky and last a long time for me. Not a recommendation, just my experience. Thanks and good luck.
@@davelowe1963 ok thanks I’ll give that a try.
My 05 silverado started clunking if im at a stop then take off it clunks and also from a stop if i let go of the brake it holds it still then i accelarate and clunks does that sound like the issue u were having ?
Sounds exactly like the issue I was having. Also, check your u-joints. They can cause the same symptoms if one of them is bad. The other common problem with these vehicles is the rear differential. The pinion gear or internal carrier bearing wears and will also make a clunking noise when going between drive and reverse. Good luck. Hope this helps!
I got the same exact issue as you man, once weather clears up I’m gonna try this and hope this works 🤙🏽
@@abelcarlos8200 did you try it ?
Updates on this method?
hello I have a ford f150 lariat 2018 80000kls with the same driveshaft problem I went to Ford they removed the driveshaft and lubricated it with PTFE grease and the noise disappeared thank you
Fantastic! Glad you got it fixed! Thanks for the information!
I keep hearing that I should replace my yoke with a nickel plated one to stop the clunking noise. Have you heard of this or have any experience with one?
I know my original yoke was replaced under warranty and if I remember correctly, it was nickel plated. Thanks
My gmc Sierra 06 does makes a clunk noise only when I put it in reverse an drive ?
Mine did that also. It got worse over time and eventually the rear differential failed. The carrier assembly in the rear end had to be replaced. Happened at about 199,000 miles.
I have an 02 Silverado z71 doing this too. Dose anyone else have problems when slowing down for a turn then accelerating? It feels like there’s a little spin then a big clunk ? It also happens when I’m at a stop then accelerate a bit then a clunk ?
My ford f150 clunked once now the drive shaft has slipped out about a eighth of a inch but no other symptoms no noise or vibration
Any idea what this means
I would have sprayed cleaner or silicone all over that yoke area. Was that an automatic or clutch?
Automatic.
What is the donut thing on the front the shaft by the splines mine is not spinning true
This is on my 2001 Tahoe. My 2002 Silverado does not have it. I’m guessing it is for balance. Not sure. You can buy a replacement slip yoke if it not in balance. Thanks.
I think it is like a balancer that helps to reduce vibration. (I am not a mechanic but I read about it.)
10:7. i saw what that tees some broken or crack? explan me.
ok ,but how do you not consider the u joints being a problem?
U-joints can cause a similar symptom. In fact, I had mine fail before and it was actually making a grinding noise. When the drive shaft is removed, perfect time to analyze the u-joint for failure. Thanks for the comment.
Does that make a loud clink noise
Not really. Usually the loud clunk noise comes from the rear differential, at least mine does. There is a lot of play in the differential carrier bearing assembly causing a bang noise when you shift from park to drive or reverse, etc.
So what you did will fix the noise when shifting
Of course this video pops up after I've replaced both you joints and had the entire rear diff rebuilt. 😂😂 For the record the rear opinion seal was leaking anyway so the rear end had to be taken apart but still.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, this did solve my problem at the time on my Silverado, but eventually the rear differential carrier assembly failed and I did have to replace it also. The pinion gear will wear along with the differential and eventually will have to be replaced. 200,000 miles for me. You should be good for years to come now! Thanks!
Where is the video where it shows the clanking noise?
Looks like y need a new rear seal
I thought mine did that cause bad gears or cross joint
Worn pinion or carrier assembly in the rear differential can cause the same symptoms.
Or sorry actually the grease will ruin the transfer case. Supposedly you’re supposed to use transfluid on the splines for 4x4s. But I still don’t understand…
Sounds like your noise could be something else since you hear it every time you shift. Maybe U-joints? Also, there is a bushing/seal inside the transfer case (not to be confused with the tail piece seal) that keeps transfer case fluid from leaking into the output shaft splines. The tail piece seal is to keep dirt and debris out of the splines. If you are leaking fluid out of the tail seal, then the inner Bushing may be failing. Anyway, do what you think is best for you as to wether you grease the shaft splines or not. Good luck and thanks for the comments.
