i think its a 50/50 you dont want them wearing the suit the entire time, but you still need them for reference, and it can be important to have scenes where the actor is wearing a full suit because it gives more weight than what cgi would give, its why robert d j had to wear the chestpiece and helmets most of the time because it was the most important spots that needed to look real like with the arms and legs you could just cgi and edit those as need be, its why gwenyth paltrows scene in avengers end game looked so wonky because it was Entirely CGI, they didnt even make a mask mold for her face as reference to make it look right, its why cgi should never be used 100%

The fact that they started with practical suits is probably why the suits still looked so good even when they were fully cg. They had perfect reference material. Only the nano suit (easily the worst one imo) lacks that sense of realism.

Before Iron Man, most directors wouldn't touch RDJ with a 10 foot pole because he had a reputation of being a huge liability. So he didn't have a lot of negotiating power. Iron Man was really his comeback opportunity. It really saved his career.

This is why practical effects should be respected, the actors who wear them have about 100 different things that could easily hinder their performance and yet they make magic happen. Cgi can be cool if the artists are given enough time and care, but practical + CGI enhancements will ALWAYS reign as supreme.
To this day I still think the effects of “Where The Wild Things Are” are still some of the best combination of practical puppets and cgi enhancement. It still looks real.
Was it Downey's acting & charisma that made the IM movies great, or was it the suit? For me, it was Downey. The suit was a bonus.
Agreed
Downing performance in the Helmet Hud is what sold it. He really does seem like he's flying around and dealing with stuff. Not just looking at a screen and reading lines.
@@TheDalinkwent There was a lot more to his 11 years as TS than shots of him with the HUD. I understand if that's what you enjoyed the most, but that alone didn't make his character the heart of the franchise. He couldn't be in the suit and give his best performance. The CGI was going to take over regardless of what he wanted anyway.
@@dasupertramp5855 My overall point is if theres a distance between Downey in and out of the suit..the whole thing doesnt work.
We need to believe Robert is in the suit to sell the danger and action and Roberts performance sells it.
"If you're nothing without the suit, then you shouldn't have it." Such a good statement
I love how early selling point for CGI was the ability to save on expensive practical effects. Then by late 2000's "yeah, we don't have too much cgi money, let's just make a functioning suit with opening hydraulic helmet"
Yeah is a bit a weird one... it was the exponential cost! CGI was more expensive BUT was cheaper to achieve the level of "realism" that was increasingly desired at the time, that would cost more and take longer if it was done with practical effects, artists and specialists, multiple models of same thing for different shots massive sets and there construction workers to build them even multiple versions of the same set and re-shoots themselves plus potential theft of those models which often happened and still happens! And you are right because NOW CGI is the 'go to' but they don't but put the money in order to make worth while and it looks shite and jarring after a couple of years! However by just throwing out a bunch of movies like this the make money and they don't care if the movie was bad of look bad they just trying to take care of parents that have no interest but still bring their with kids to see those movies because NOW, it doesn't need to look real! It just needs to sell toys! The opening weekend tickets are just a bonus
Wasn't the early selling point the things you couldn't do without practical effects?
There are some things that you never see in old movies because they couldn't do that

The real helmet doesn't just save the studio money on CG. It also makes the final product look more real, not only because the helmet is actually there, but because the actor wearing it moves like he's wearing a helmet. He feels the weight and limitations of it and moves accordingly. That's why the first Iron Man film feels like we're seeing something actually happening, and Endgame feels like we're watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Yes, but I’m also willing to accept that there’s some actual verisimilitude going on. In the first movie, he’s wearing the first three marks and just learning how to use them. By Endgame, he’s got years of experience wearing the suits, is on the 85th iteration, and it’s made out of nanomachines, son.

Ah. So RDJ is the reason why every character has a nanotech helmet in the MCU.
Exactly
They could have just hired a stunt actor to learn RDJ's mannerisms and have him do all the suit scenes.
Would have saved millions
I thought the same thing after watching lol
Iron Man has famously been using nanotech in his suits in the comics for a long time.
Iron Man armor model 29, a.k.a the Extremis Armor. First appearance 2005. It was essentially the first sort of nano-tech/compressed-tech suit that he had in the comics and it was 3 years before the first film even released. So no, RDJ isn't the reason anybody has anything in the MCU, it's all just showing people shit that existed in the comics already...
Furthermore, going from physical props to CG overlay is infinitely better for both the actors and the filming process as it reduces the amount of cuts you need to make for everything to look seamless, and the physical props need a bunch of editing done to make them look "right" anyway so they're not just 1:1 using the thing and showing us how it looked on set.
Practical suits with CGI looks so much better than All CGI like the last films.
First iron man is pure gold, + he’s been a childhood fav since I saw Air America. Such a great actor.
But that's also why it lools worse in infinity war. That onr scene after "Why is Gamorra", iron mans helmet is literally 2 pixels (or rather voxels) thick during the extremely poorly made cgi helmet
They should’ve use a real nano tech helmet or something?😂
@@Noa_persico I'm not sure what you are getting at. Nano-tech or not, the problem is that they don't add size that match the thickness of the helmet. Even if it's nanotech, it has to still build up a thick layer so it actually has rigidity and strength. So this is why the suit looks so much better in the first movie, because it is made based in a real suit built up around RDJ's body.
It's a similar story with e.g. Master Chief's armor in Halo. The only armor that realistically makes sense is the one from Halo 4, as that one is the only one bulky enough to actually fit a human inside of it.
While I love and prefer the looks of the Halo 2 and 3 armor, the size of the person inside that suit has to be very skinny.

Darth Vader: you disappoint me. Everything I've done is in my Full Suit.
Thats why the 1st Iron Man is by far the best. The level of commitment & struggle an actor makes directly affects their on-screen presence. In other words, how good they are. I LOVE practical suits but i think its best to have a mix of practical and CG. Ideally, using CGI for the joints, fingers, and mask, but the rest be practical
And this right here is why CG is common now. People outside the industry don't grasp how difficult it is working with practical suits and monsters. Older films did it because they had to, not because it was preferred.
