I saw this on Broadway. Great show! And Scott Bakula can do no wrong - he's STILL gorgeous now (2020).

Except perhaps when he accidentally almost killed that elderly woman during Pirates of Penzance, but that's why we got him on all those wonderful TV series so I'm glad it happened.

I love, love, love this show!! I wish it had not been up against Phantom of the Opera for the Tony Awards that year = (

It is a crime and a scandal this did not last longer on Broadway. The music is absolutely gorgeous, and I'll never understand--or want to understand--the type of mind that values empty spectacle over genuine human emotion.

I've watched this a million times, here on CZcams and back in the day on my VHS recording of the Tonys...and can never get over their quick costume change. They've both got their Hamptons costumes under the Vienna ones, and probably magnets and what not to rip the costumes off. But the shoes, and especially Alison's boots. Scott's pairs are both obviously slip ons but still it's a rapid fire change and then to just back out on stage in seconds with a different persona. Alison had a few extra moments. Don't get me wrong, I'm in awe of these performers, and have the great pleasure of seeing both of them perform live. But damn that quick change! LOL

There is a shot where we see him on stage left and right. How did that happen..?

@@JoopSloot AH I figured it out. I thought that at first also, but it the is other couple we are seeing. At about 2:23 Scott and Alison rush off stage left (our right) and the camera cuts to the other couple who are dancing on stage right. I'm sure if you were seeing it live in the theatre it would not be so magically impossible.

Probably Velcro. Looks like Scott only had 20 seconds for that change. He might have to have had the second costume on under the first costume.
I once was in a children's theater show of an Aladdin and the Wonderful lamp, where I had two roles (as did several other cast members) one character was a slave to the Genie and the other was a palace guard. There was one scene change where me and another actor had about a minute to a minute and a half for a costume change from the slaves to the guards. to help speed up the change we didn't have to change our trousers which if I recall had elastic in the waistband and at the ankle cuffs. As the slaves we had simple tunics a rope belt and a bandana type headband, for the guards we had a different tunic and a head piece that looked like a turban but was really just a padded ring on our heads and a cloth belt that was secured by Velcro and had a thin short wooden sword that was sewn onto the belt. One performance I barely got on stage to give my short line of dialogue that was probably a "Yes your majesty" or something similar that could be said while entering the stage, the other guy was a little late and was still putting on his belt, as he was coming on stage.

I saw this on Broadway, unfortunately I saw it at the end of its run, and Scot Bakula had already had left the show..

How so? It played successfully on Broadway, got a nice original cast recording, and won a Tony for Scott Bakula, so I'd say it's pretty Broadway.

Michael Crawford won the Tony that year, not Bakula.
