  • Fake Star Wars trailers can be fun when presented as fan projects or concepts, but this is not that. Today we're looking at fake trailers that are presented as real, and designed to deceive your average internet traveler into clicking.

    I remember when the internet was bombarded with these fake trailers in the years leading up to Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. They'd always just use clips of Eragon or some other movie with dragons in it.
    The worst of those trailers (which seems to have been deleted by now) had to be one that just used clips of 300 and The Matrix, followed by a JPEG of the book cover. And then two minutes of an empty black screen later it played the entirety of the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer (I don't remember if it was Dead Man's Chest or At World's End) with no editing or audio, like it was added in there by accident and the editor didn't bother to check before posting it online.

    Fake trailers while deceitful, used to be more about “what ifs” they used to feel like ppl using their video editing skills to show what they’d like to see from a galaxy far, far away. Now they’re purely abt tricking people to get views and spread misinformation.

    • @darinstaley1993
      @darinstaley1993 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I remember back in the early CZcams days I used to watch those "what if" videos, like what if Heir to the Empire was adapted into a movie? Or what if Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine was adapted into a movie? They used clips from the movies and sometimes fan made movies to make it look like a trailer. People used to do it for fun or like you said to try out their video editing skills

    My Dad has fallen for these things a few times and would send them to me or ask if I've seen the new trailer for "X". The best way to help people not fall for the bullshit is to tell them that if the uploader isn't an official brand that owns the IP, it's probably fake. I know there are re-upload channels for trailers, but even I always look for the official channel trailer.

    I remember when teenage me fell for a fake Episode II trailer back in 2001, featuring such gems as Christopher Walken and a battle scene from Braveheart that edited the weapons to be lightsabers. In my defense, the video was bitcrushed to hell and played on a small Quicktime window, making it difficult to discern the details. I excitedly showed it to everyone I knew, only to get a cold dose of reality when the official trailers dropped.

    My dad notoriously falls for this to the point where I gotta tell him what's actually coming to screen. He thought he watched the kenobi series a year before the actual show came out, turned out he watched the really well made and impressive fan film by Jamie Costa.
    What still haunts me is that in 2013, My dad said he read some sort of interview briefly describing the upcoming Force Awakens Movie. he told me exactly this: "Yeah, the next film apparently luke goes crazy and lives on an island and the new characters have to find him!" my immediate thought was 'why would my dad believe the stupidest claim ever?'
    a decade later, I still think it was the neatest plot line ever to open up the 7th film but I wonder how dad found out a year before the film even had trailers?

    As someone who edits Star Wars out of passion for the craft and the content, this kind of stuff makes me sick and is actively putting a bad wrap on those who actually create solid content that isn't trying to fool people into giving you views and money-and, yes, I can confirm that they do earn money off of these (which is why they clickbait in the first place).

  • @NathanRojas
    @NathanRojas Před 5 měsíci +3

    For anyone looking for new Star Wars trailers, if it isn't posted on the Official Stat Wars or Lucasfilm CZcams Channel, it's not it. It's especially funny when they desperately put the Disney+ logo in the thumbnail [something real trailers never do], even if it isn't a Disney+ series. It could be a theatrical film and they'll still add that logo.
    Another personal favorite is "Full Movie" videos.
    Example: "Oppenheimer Full Movie": A 3 hour film by Universal, but the clickbait video is 1 hour 30 min with the 20th Century Fox logo as the thumbnail. Obviously not everyone is in the know on this stuff, but for those who are, you can't help but laugh at the absurdity.

    I remember coming across a lot of fake trailers during the early days of CZcams. Back then they were very amateurish, mostly made by kids playing with video editing software. The easiest way is just to check who the uploader is before clicking. When it comes to Star Wars, if it's not the official Star Wars channel, Lucasfilm, or Disney+, it's obviously fake. There are other channels that get the rights to share the official trailers on their channels because they're trusted entertainment news outlets with CZcams channels, but the creators of these movies and shows also have CZcams channels and upload to them. If you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, look for Marvel Entertainment, if you like the Godzilla and Kong Monsterverse, look for Legendary or Warner Bros. as the uploader. It's really quite simple.

    I wonder how many of those views are bot-generated to boost those fake trailers' visibility.

    When I see these fake ass trailers, I just know it’s fake and keep scrolling away. I’ll know when it’s a fan made trailer when I watch the wonky ass editing. Like how I was looking up the Kung Fu Panda 4 trailer and they had these wonky ass edits, I knew immediately it was fan made even when I didn’t spot it in the title.

    Its crazy how real videos get copywritten strikes over like 2-10 seconds of their videos but then these entire fake ass trailers get away with 2-3 minutes of pure bullshit

      Seriously. I remember in 2009 right after the dark knight came out all the fake “batman 3” trailers fancasting Johnny depp as the riddler. This shits been around forever

    I’m honestly not surprised some people would fall for something like that. A decent amount of people will believe a lot of stuff from clickbait youtubers. It’s sad but not surprising that a lot of people are gullible these days when it comes to certain topics/stuff these days.

    Fake trailers have always been a thing. I remember almost getting tricked by fake KOTOR 3 trailers from back before SWTOR was even announced.

    How dare they? I came from a time when you saw a fake trailer, you knew it was fake and it was basically a fanfiction in video short form.

    A simple rule I follow for Star Wars trailers is that if they're not on the official Star Wars CZcams channel, then I don't watch them. It's the easiest way to avoid this click-bait BS.

    The best thing to do is to ignore them if you mistakenly click on them. Even if you negativily react to it via angry comments or giving it a thumbs down, it will still drive up the algorithm.

    Yeah, I blocked Darth Trailer recently after on of their videos are recomendet tonme again... But I have 2 little anecdotes about this:
    At the pre episode 9 time, my stepfather told me, he actually saw the trailer of episode 9 (he isn't a prequel fan, so it probably was like: "look what Bull-#€)@ they made"). I took a look at the video he meant and instantly recognize footage of the ToR cinematics (wich where around a decade old at that time).
    The other story was like 15 years or so ago. I heared rumors about the Underworld series, Lucas worked one. And after a bit of searching I found a pretty wild trailer... A person wearing Leias "Boush"-costume from episode 6, but it looked different, Boba Fett pulling a guy up, C-3PO and R2-D2 doing carring boxes or something and other stuff, I can't recall anymore.
    Years went by and I recognize something about my memorys:
    I found a trailer for the old Jango Fett game, where Jango pulled the same guy up.
    I realized, there where quite a lot TV-spots with C-3PO and R2-D2, many content of them one can't recognize from the movies.
    And last but not least, I heard about a species from Star Trek, that looked allmost exactly like Boush.
