To preface this, I am not a HP fan. I have never read the books. I watched only the first movie and it was because I was watching it with friends. I didn't care for the story enough to continue watching the rest of the movies.
So that all being said, the person Warren is responding to thinks they're smarter than they are. The fact that they say "It's also f*cking Star Wars!" as if it was an "Aha! Gotcha!" moment in their criticism of HP...shows how little they know. George Lucas unabashedly created Star Wars from a variety of sources of inspiration such as Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Citing Star Wars for being a source of reference for Rowling's HP isn't an a gotcha moment on Rowling. It's a gotcha moment on this ill informed person.
He also seems to not realize that George Lucas has said that he used Joseph Campbell's "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" as an integral part of his story process. Meaning, Lucas uses tried and true mythology tropes/cliches that have existed in various cultures for thousands of years, such as "The Hero's Journey".
Who criticizes Star Wars for simply being derivative, and because of that, it isn't a good story? There are valid criticisms of Star Wars but being derivative isn't one of them. Otherwise, all stories would be "bad" because they aren't wholly original or unique.
The fact that HP is derivative isn't bad. All great stories can be traced to influence/reference sources. Humans find certain patterns of narrative structure and concepts compelling. That's why all "great stories" are from a limited pool of fundamental characteristics. Great stories are far less about being unique or original than they are about being well executed story with coherency, consistency, and satisfying culmination/pay-off. If HP has these qualities then it's a good story, regardless of wearing its influences on its sleeve.
This person with a critique of HP being derivative is obviously not a trained or educated writer of any sort. They know nothing of the field of composing literature. At best, they have a poorly formed, and easily dissected, opinion.

I'm on Rowlings' side. Think about music: there are only 12 notes. A small combination of those notes harmonize with each other. Musicians copy from each other all the time. There are motifs and tonal cliches. It's incredibly hard to come up with a new melody or chord combination because we have so many decades, even centuries, of recorded music. And I'll bet this particular Rowling critic has never written a truly original thing in his life.

Are we serious? " Disney's The Sword in the Stone which is probably based on something..." Yeah, the novel of the same name by T.H. White, which is a modern retelling of the Arthurian cycle. The Sword in the Stone itself is however particularly original as Arthur's young life was not heavily detailed in the original legends. Also, I mean... the 36 Dramatic Situations, the 7 Basic Plots ... it has long been observed that all stories are essentially remixes of other stories. It's all about *who* you populate your story with and *how* you tell the story. Character, descriptive detail, pacing, etc. It's not clear to me why this guy was worth responding to when he doesn't even know the basics of the subject he's discussing, he's just hating on JKR off the top of his head.

Thing is while the heroes journey is the tale in Deed of Paksenarion, fire crossing, Born to troll, Harry Potter, the dark lord of derkholm, penrics demon and many others the details are very different and that authors idea. One tells the tale of a young woman who becomes a goddesss by accident and has to learn to abandon the mortal realm to protect it, another tells of a young man who is working to protect his world from the interstellar society they rebelled from and protect the people he cares about, a third focuses on a young women trying to secure a place in the world in an era when women had few rights as her husband dominates and terrifies her, yet another is about a guy who learns to be a good crafter building things. I started off disliking the HP series and rowling because i instantly recognized the same tropes.
I adored the Worst Witch and Sword in the Stone (star wars was meh... space wizards and politics...Meh for days)
But then i ACTUALLY read the HP books and discovered... similar yes. But different. VERY different.
HP's father was not a mass murderer. HP did NOT become king. He threw it away. He was not the worst student that lucked into a magical school.
Telling familiar stories without challenging questions??
Did this guy play on his phone when he watched the movies? Did he read the reviews instead of the books?
Because there is nothing but challenge in the enture series.
It's aimed at children yet it has heavy subjects. This entire series is a therapists playground.
If you study psychology you can easily read and diagnose every single character.
Take away the magic and you still have a fantastic story about love, loyalty, betrayal, redemption, forgiveness, abuse, exploitation and brainwashing.
I don't remember any of that in star wars, sword in the stone or worst witch.

    • @Hy-Brasil
      @Hy-Brasil Před měsícem +6

And to reiterate my statement about my dislike.... i love these books.
I liken it to Oliver than the others. There is the endless undercurrent of everything and everyone being connected.
It also highlights fantastically how different people react to the same circumstances. Potter/Voldemort.. for one example. Orphans, raised without loving parents, bullied by the rich kids etc.
Even snapes character was wildly complicated. Playing a double agent for two mind readers? Pretending to loathe the son of your best friend? The friend you accidentally murdered while on a side quest for revenge?
It's amazing to me how people completely disregard all of this stuff and only focus on the magic. The magic was fun but totally unimportant.
You would have still had a great story without it.

Stories are born from conflict and there are only 4.
    1. Man vs. Man
    2. Man vs. Self
    3. Man vs. Society
    4. Man vs. Nature
Stories share archetypes because they are archetypes.
Archetypes are universal, inborn models of distinct aspects of identity and personality that play a role in influencing human behavior.
What amuses me about this tantrum is that he identifies all of the stories that are similar to Harry Potter and in being similar to Harry Potter they are in fact similar to each other BUT ONLY Harry Potter is "unoriginal"/"stolen". Then the child quotes an author who destroys his entire argument of theft only to then switch attack lines "ok it is not stolen but it is not good". Sadly the planet disagrees with him. After he compared her work to Disney's adaptation of "The Sword in the Stone" and casually remarked, "which is probably based on something," I couldn't take him seriously. Failing to properly acknowledge one of the most influential myths of all time reveals he either has a limited knowledge of mythical and fantasy fiction, or he was being cheeky in order to diminish her work by suggesting she merely recycled tropes from an old Disney movie.
If you are arguing she's a derivative storyteller within the realm of mythical and fantasy fiction under the guise of intellectual analysis, you should at least present all the facts and inform your audience of the source material for Disney's The Sword in the Stone, which is rooted in the legends of King Arthur. Given that she wove in characters like Merlin and Morgan Le Fay into the historical fabric of the Wizarding World, it's evident she has studied these legends past a Disney adaptation.
And even if he genuinely didn't know the origins, his remark comes off as poorly researched.

Also, to call Harry Potter and outcast of Hogwarts is ridiculous because literally everybody wanted to know him or be his friend, even Malfoy wanted to be associated with Potter. I think this person is just saying words in not necessarily trying to make sense. At least sense that is consistent across a paragraph as opposed to limited to one sentence and then you forget that sentence and move on to next sentence.

Well, it wasn't really "inspired" by Tolkien, it was more that Paolini had very similar motifs and elements from Tolkien, Star Wars, the Dragonriders of Pern, David Eddings (I am less familiar with this bit) that bordered, and sometimes crossed, over into copying.

Lord of the Rings has a “ring of power” that enslaves its users while giving them unearthly abilities, stolen by a devious slave-creature who curses human kind. And where did that come from? The Ring of the Nibelung opera cycle, by Richard Wagner...

    • @adde27
      @adde27 Před měsícem +1

      @@jonathanmelia Let's clear up a few things:
The ring of the Nibelung is heavily based on Norse mythis and the Eddas, as are some parts of Tolkien's works. This is the common source, not Wagner's musical.
The Ring of Wagner does not "enslave" its users: the Nibelungen are enslaved by Alberich, but how is never shown: nor are any other powers of the Ring (despite it having "unlimited power"), save immense desire to possess it, (the Tarnhelm has invisibility).
Alberich is also not a "slave-creature": he is a Dwarf: hideous, yes, but not a slave.
As many have said elsewhere: they pull from the same sources, but arrive at different results.
