    Just a warning to everyone: i've used enamel products for several years, keep in mind that this is very different from acrylics, there's habits of licking off a brush during painting, that might be okay for acrylics but is quite toxic for you with enamels. It has fumes that can make you dizzy too, so use good ventilation or an A1 respirator.
    However, enamels are really fun to use and a great product! You can think of it as a wash, that you can remove away again so it only stays in the recesses, my facorite is the streaking grime from AK.
    I would recommend Lacquer thinner though for cleaning brushes, and white spirits for thinning paints.

    • @edwardkenworthy7013
      @edwardkenworthy7013 Před 3 lety +6

      Licking paintbrushes is bad for you (and your brushes) regardless of the medium.
      Many pigments are toxic, especially in the more interesting paint ranges. Cobalt for example is used in really intense blues, Chromium is used to vibrant reds and yellows. I don't think GW uses them in their paints but better safe than sorry.

      As far as cleaning off your brush in your mouth, this is a bad habit taken from GW stores in the 90's that was mixed up. We used to shape the point of the brush in our mouth with our lips, after cleaning it in water to keep the point sharp. I also used to roll the brush in the fold of my palm, under my pinkie finger to shape the point. So we would teach customers to paint as part of the job, but they all thought we were cleaning our brushes in our mouth, and it stuck with them. They passed the habit down, and so on. I remember so many children asking "You eat the paint?" with their face all screwed up in disbelief, as I painted with them. I made sure to point out that the brush should be cleaned with water first when teaching customers how to paint, back then, and I was just making a sharp point on my brush, not cleaning it.

    For anyone trying this out, I stumbled across a neat little trick with the white spirits: when using it to draw down the rust, you'll get some thin rust enamel at the end of your brush: draw this into the recesses at the bottom of the panel (fortunately, Mark III power armor has these on just about every last part of it). Doing this adds shading in recesses where rust would build up naturally, and it provides areas of very faint rust tint color, basically like a glaze, and it adds subtle but very nice looking variation to the armor. And of course if you don't like how these areas look, the spirits can clean it off too.

    I’d never thought I’d see the day when Duncan would use enamels!
    One thing that I feel is worth noting, when using enamel paints (especially for washes, maybe less of an issue for streaks), it’s maybe a good idea to paint them onto a glossy surface to make sure they both flow well and can be cleaned off very easily. I think you’d do that with ‘Ardcoat with a brush, I’m not 100% sure as I use an airbrush for that.

    I have one reservation with this video though, the matt white highlight, I think it might be a little too much and makes the armour looks very clean and bright (not the look I'm after). An alternative method I have been using myself is to use a lighter off white rather than a pure matt white. I use Menoth White from P3, it is similar to screaming skull but much lighter, it works perfectly to keep that dirty off white colour and it allows you to do a final highlight of matt white on the very tips and corners of the marines armour.

    I was doing some AK Rust streaks on a Terrax/Termite Assault Drill earlier this year. A useful tip I learned for working with enamels and white spirit is to use the little glass dishes that Gü puddings come in (If you don't/can't get Gü where you're from, they're little cheesecake desserts that come in glass ramekins).
    You buy a big bottle of white spirit from any kind of hardware/painting/DIY shop, and when you're painting you set out dishes full of the stuff. You want one for cleaning, and another one for thinning.
    You want to use glassware because it's not chemically reactive, which you can't guarantee for any enamelled or glazed ceramic dishes or tiles you might normally use during painting - I ruined the saucer that I used as a pallet this way. The white spirit reacted with the glaze, and it went tacky and horrible

    I painted my DG army like Pallid Hand without even thinking about it, and was very pleased when I learned my paint scheme was pretty much official! My difference is that I just slather Seraphim Sepia all over the armor that I basecoat with Vallejo Dead Flesh to make them especially nasty.

    What the fuck, I've been painting my Death Guard with a VERY similar scheme since the Dark Vengeance update and I had NO IDEA it was its own warband - I forgot the paints I used, but this looks so similar I can just follow this tutorial. You're a godsend, Duncan.

    Nice! I was thinking hmmm they need more wear and tear (I paint my marines and highlight with the shade still on the armor, "Death Guard) and then you didn't fail to disappoint that the very end!!

    I'm painting some of these guys up now, only subbing the green for purple. I like the idea that they see themselves as being regal, even if the rest of the galaxy don't.

    I use basically this colour scheme but with red instead of green, like Maxime Pastourel's plaguebones army. I'll def be picking up some of these rust effect mediums though, looks better than what I'm using now!
