MRUV 100: Scenic Detailing & Preparations for All Aboard Dinor Scratch Build

  • This update shows a little bit of progress on the layout, mostly finishing up scenes and getting the signal bridge weathered and permanently installed. We then discuss the plan and possibilities for the Lake City area. There are several scenic items under consideration for inclusion, but as usual space will be a concern so compromises will need to be made.
    The video concludes with the start of the scratch build of the All Aboard Dinor (yes, it is spelled with a "o" around here...). The location, concept, compromises, and concerns are discussed. The main goal initially was to get a scale drawing of the building (just the plan view for now) so that the foundation can be built and installed on the layout. That will allow scenery to continue and the building can then be placed once completed.
    The build itself will likely be several videos and will be included in the "Scratch Build Series" playlist.
    The time is approaching for the return to my on-site job in Homer City, PA. There may be one more update before departure, then things will slow down as I will be away until late June. (I hope no longer!) During the time on-site I plan to work the Dinor- additional building plans, construction plan, sourcing details, etc.

    That "little area" at 2:08 looks absolutely stunning, a lot "vertical" stuff going on in there. Nice to hear the return of the Bensound "Happiness" main theme.

    As always, great video and thank you for sharing your ideas and how-we-do-it. Your layout has taken on the look of a very real railroad, attention to details that maybe some of us other's might overlook. Interesting to see how you go about deciding how to do a scene. The "Dinor" build should be cool to watch. Stephen thank you for sharing and taking me along on the journey.

    Rob those Valves in the Field are Shut off Valves for Natural Gas lines. Around Indiana they are painted yellow so that they can find it buried in the snow if it gets that deep. They are usually fenced off with an 8 foot chain linked fence with Concertina wire on top. If you cant find the Switch lamps. what about scratch building them out of Cone shaped beads and Jewels? Let me look thru my wifes beading materials and see if I cant find the shallower cones that small Jewels would sit in. Heck might have to take a run to Hobby lobby or Michaels to see what they have, I know that they have them. :)

    At 24:55 there was a headless guy in the photo from inside the All Aboard Dinor! May be a lot of work but it is really going to be nice when it's done. Can't wait to see the progress of the build series. Great work Rob! Cheers, Dan

    Great update and nice additional details on some of the things I thought were finished! They're NEVER finished! I know what you mean about things being larger than we perhaps think. At one time I was planning to model my local railway station, and surroundings, until I realised the platform alone would be 15-16 feet! even in OO scale.

    layout is looking great. you have lots of green space. so i like the ice cream caboose idea. you do nice scratch builds so this one will be looking forward to. but the next area looks to be a bit of a challenge. 😂 aw your leaning towards no ice cream, love the Hornet. have some fun, and thanks for sharing

    Brilliant, Rob. I'm sure you'll more than do that station justice. BTW.......I'm about 80 miles due north of you in Brantford, Ontario so will be lookin' over yer shoulder, mate. If I had to vote on the best model railroading CZcams channel it would be yours. You can be proud of what you're doing. Cheers!

    Another really nice update! I especially like your vegetation. My current layout is set in the desert, so my approach to vegetation is a little different from yours. But I grew up in central Pennsylvania, and I can really relate to the way you do vegetation. ...Roy

  • @giulius7176
    @giulius7176 Před 7 lety

    One of the biggest problems with model railroading is trying to fit everything we want into the space we ACTUALLY have....it's too bad you dropped the caboose part, if I were building it, I would make room for it BUT It's your layout not mine....I'm sure it will come out incredible as usual!!!

    Another fantastic video. That pipe arrangement at the start isn't uncommon I saw alot of natural gas pipes and valves while cycling along the Panhandle Trail in 2015. Alot of the "random" stuff you throw into your layout is the sort of things alot of people miss but as you are modeling something near to you I guess you can really examine the prototype for inspiration
    Looking forward to the scratch build too!!

      to build on that I have also noticed fences, or guards,often built around these valves. The fences and guards arent necessarily to keep people out but to prevent an accident like a tractor running them over or a car coming off the road and striking the value disabling the pipeline

    Stephen, tell me, how much time do you spend on the layout? A very realistic layout. You will look at other models and at once it is not natural, but everything is super. You are an artist who puts his soul into the layout, Thank you, I look forward to new videos with impatience. Your fan from Russia

    I'd put that "value piping" away from the house area...maybe across the road in the teddy bear fur section. It looks like valving for an underground interstate gas line?

    It's great to see your layout progress. Is it a dialectic regionalism unique to the Lake City Area for folks to spell diners as "dinors", or is that unique only to the All Aboard Dinor?

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 Před 7 lety

      It seems to be unique to the Erie, PA area. I never could find out exactly why. But most of the diners in this area are indeed spelled "dinor".

  • @radionut4422
    @radionut4422 Před 7 lety

    Was there a reason they spelled it dinor rather than the usual diner? Just wondering. Maybe they used the same sign painter that painted "Side Entrace" for a "TV and Stero Repair" shop in my hometown. Don't believe they had spell check in 1960.

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 Před 7 lety

      It is an Erie, PA area "thing". Based on the googling I did, there doesn't seem to be a definitive reason. But nearly all the diners around here are dinors!

    Stephen, I really appreciate what you are accomplishing on your layout! Here is a source that I know of for the "lanterns" you're seeking for your diner. They are called Ramapo.
    www.njinternational.com/switch.htm They are are also sold by Walthers. Best of luck. Thanks for going to the trouble of sharing your layout build with us. It is appreciated and inspiring! - Paul K.

    How did you number the signals?

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 Před 7 lety

      Used MS Word. Arial 6pt, bold white font with black text highlighting was a close match. Carefully cut the numbers out and glued to the plates with Microscale Micro Liquitape.
