- Thanks to Crown Northampton for sponsoring this video! Here are the two sneaker styles I tried in this video:
Hand Stitch Shell Cordovan - shrsl.com/3czmq
Overstone Derby Calf - shrsl.com/3czmr
I’m a huge fan of minimalist leather sneakers. For several years now, I’ve been trying out all of the different luxury sneaker brands to try to find the best pair. From Common Projects to Koio, Oliver Cabell and Greats, Beckett Simonon, New Republic, Ascot and Charlie, Idrese, Allen Edmonds…I’ve tried them all.
And while there are big differences between some of these brands, many of them are kind of similar: made in Italy, handcrafted, premium leather, Margom outsoles…you’ve heard all of this, right? When I get a new sample from a sneaker brand, I really don’t expect it to look or feel much different than anything else I’ve tried. But Crown Northampton is different.
I heard about this company from my friend Jon who runs The Kavalier CZcams channel. He - and others - seemed to think that Crown Northampton sneakers were on a whole other level. Not just a good alternative to Comms Projects, but noticeably better. That got my attention.
So when the nice people over at Crown Northampton offered to send over some sneakers and sponsor a video, I had to accept. Now, this isn’t a review. I haven’t worn these shoes for long enough to properly review them, and I don’t do paid reviews. This is an unboxing, an overview of the brand, and an explanation of how a pair of sneakers can cost over $800.

I’m lucky enough to live 20 miles from Northampton so I arranged a visit for me and my son and we had our own lasts made so that we can re-order as and when we want. I have 2 pairs and will add to the collection every couple of years. Great sneakers from a great little company.
Wow that’s awesome!
Do you have a white pair? Curious as to how well they hold up (cleanliness wise).
@@zachgray8007 Hi, I don’t have a white pair so can’t really comment more than that they’re excellent shoes.
How much did it cost you to get your own lasts made?!?
Hey John, I don’t live too far from Northampton either. How did you get in contact to arrange this? And also did they charge for it?
I’ve owned crown northhampton shoes for 2+ years. They do take time to break in, but are amazingly soft afterwards. I love this type of shoe as I don’t normally dress like formal attire, but still wear premium materials. Instead of a high end button down I wear a pima cotton knit or a merino wool long sleeve. So, likewise instead of a dress shoe, a hand made full grain leather sneaker is right up my alley.
Which pairs do you own?
I love the fact these exist too. Amazing craftsmanship. Thanks for the review.
I own 2 pairs from Crown, their Chukka boot and the off white hand stitched snickers. Both amazing shoes! Comfortable and they look great. My favourite shoe company along with Crockett and Jones
What shoes do you have from crockett and jones?
I have the Sydney penny loafer in dark brown suede. I bought them a year ago from their shop on Jermyn St. If you have the opportunity to go around that street, I highly suggest you do. You’ll find some of the best British shoemakers and many great shops with bespoke clothing.
Do you have any problems with the toe stiffener on the hand stitch trainers?
@@jimblack8104 No problem at all, they are extremely comfortable
Definitely looking forward to a review of each after you've had the opportunity to wear them.
I've had the shell cordovan sneakers from Crown Northampton for over a year and they look brand new. The sole is also incredibly soft yet has not worn much being a gum material.
Thank you for a wonderful video - have been looking for something like this!
These are an incredible product made by passionate craftsmen and women.
Saving up for a pair of my own. They look so clean omg!!
I bought a pair 3 years ago. Still an absolut fan!
I bought a pair of Derby's in the #8 colour. Today was actually the first day they felt broken in. The heel counter on the left foot was particularly brutal but now my feet are sitting on cloud nine in a dashing gum sole.
Wow Brock, a great video! It's definitely clear that this brand is a cut above the rest.
I have a pair of blue leather with white sole crown Northampton overstone derby. The quality and comfort is great however i find them bulky compared to my common project which are lower quality, but i still prefer the look of the common projects by far
Those brown sneakers look SO good!
Can't spend that much money though.
I am an absolute fan of Crown Nothampton's, far better than common projects. For around $400 their white sneakers provide much much more value & quality than common projects.
I never tried Crown, but Common Projects are very high quality and comfortable. Just my experience. The Crown ones look amazing, I will check their shoes out for sure. Not that I can really afford them (:
@@Lommy9999 I just watched a guy cut 1 of both brands in half. The Crown are far better quality
appreciate for that advice, Sir,
diffinitivelly my next purchase, when i am in UK again...
Exceptional shoes. Even the ladies are picking up on noticing these on guys' feet in the nice part of town... where the substance behind the show means something. Common Projects is really starting to live up to their name from a class POV ;)
I have 2 pairs of Crown sneakers. I love them, they're super comfortable.
I have their Horween leather in Upton design with gum soles! they are beautiful!
Nice choice!
i love my handstich line crowns are super comfortable and navy scottish deer suede super hi quality a pair in shell definetly next on my list
I have a pair of thursday white sneakers, but I want to get some CNH brown ones soon
Excellent video Modest Man.
I would like to hear your opinion on these two brands: Thursday Boots Premium Low Top White Sneakers and Idrese Nuno White Sneakers.
They both look pretty awesome but I am a little sceptical. I was hoping to get your opinion on them.
Thanks.
Northampton is/was a huge cobbling place. Dr Martins is down the road in Wollaston. Plus the place that makes all the leather Luggage for Aston Martin.
Dear god those brown ones look good
Have a few pairs ot their shoes. They are great
I just bought a whiskey shell gum sole pair. I hope they fit....
I saw this in ross anvil channel year ago and the review is good!!
Best quality trainers on the market, owner is really passionate about what he is doing.
Very cool….love your content man!
Thank you!
First video I've watched from you and all I can say is DUDE CAN DRESS!! . great style mate and awesome video . Over $1400 here in Australia too expensive!
I knew they were crown North Hampton just from the thumbnail 👍 good stuff
How is the sizing on these? Did you go true to brannock size or half a size up?
I have a wide foot but I don't know their G option will be wide enough. You mention they are a little wider than normal? Do you think the G option would be like a EE in the US ?
Horween leather is probably really high quality, but the looks are kind of avarage, they are a bit chunky and that two-tone upper looks really weird. I would stick to my Berwick sneakers for 1/10 of the price.
I think Crown is the ideal balance of comfort and silhouette. Most brands are too narrow for me (looks great, feels cramped). But these things are subjective. Thanks for watching!
I have 4 pairs on koios and 1 pair of crown northampton ( in kudu suede).. The quality on the crowns are on another level than my koios but I prefer the slim looks of the koios.
4:49 That has me curious, which barefoot shoes have you tried? Depending on how long ago that was, there's a lot more luxury and affordable luxury shoes in that market now, even made-to-measure shell cordovan shoes and faux heel nubuck derby boots
Love the darker sneaker. What I dislike is dark sneakers with high contrasting lighter soles... to me they just look like there is too much going on... Crown gets this spot on. The quality of the Crown looks beyond amazing!
I agree completely! I never liked the black upper w/ white outsole look. The gum sole looks so much better.
Popped into the factory, great products shown by the owner Chris
I like this channel
Love from India ❤️❤️❤️
Would rather pay almost 900 for these sneakers than 500 for the ones with the BALENCIAGA logo visible from the International Space Station
Two different classes of sneakers
Cannot compare beans to apples no matter how ugly and bad the Balenciagas are
What’s the jacket at 6:13
One thing I have been trying to decide between, is going with the tan shell, or the burgundy (cordovan #8). Any thoughts?
Probably tan but those are both versatile colors. If you wear more light wash jeans vs dark wash, I’d go tan.
wish they sold similar leather soles shoes. Like one low top boot would be make a good second pair.
You are amazing at what you do,I am always looking forward to your videos,I am not a fan of the crown sneakers as I don’t find their silhouette appealing but I commend their craftsmanship,I’m a common project fan for life, haven’t seen any minimal sneaker brand that beats common projects in silhouette but great video overall.
I remember seeing these on The Kavalier. They looked like nice shoes. I love the dark brown but not at that price.
Shell Cordovan is worth that price
For sneakers, 800 pounds is a lot of money, when you can buy cordovan shoes or boots for the same price. I own Crown sneakers (Overstone) in brown and white, good quality by far and above the others (check the video of Rose Anvil channel from April 2021), but in cordovan, not my cup of tea; for that money, I buy a pair of Carmina boots in cordovan instead. just my two cents
@The Modest Man can you please do a follow up video to how these sneakers have worn and lasted after 1 year? After all they are some of the worlds most expensive sneakers so it's only right you give a 1 year update to point out strengths and weaknessesè :)
Give me a pair of those over a pair of high-fashion sneakers any day of the week.
Are the Horween Cordovan leather sneakers really "that" comfortable right out of the box? They are gorgeous but they look uncomfortable to me, like there would be a long break-in time.
Rose Anvil does a detailed review
Hey Brock, Im contemplating on getting me a pair of their Everdon wholecut mid sneakers. What would be the most versatile color to get?
I’d go with white, off white or light grey. Basically a light neutral color, which is more versatile than a darker color IMO.
Thanks! What do you think about their Forest green chromexcel? Is that green close enough to dark olive for it to be versatile like you mentioned in your “best color for Men’s boots”?
@@chrisramirez7774 I wouldn't go with any shade of green over white/neutral for a sneaker (not nearly as versatile IMO).
I realize it is a totally different price point but how do their sneakers compare to Thursday’s roughout brown sneakers?
I haven’t tried Thursday sneakers yet but check the CZcams channel Stridewise 👍🏻
Same, these are insanely expensive and I'll probably never buy them. But damn if they aren't cool.
Worth every penny. 🇬🇧👞
Actually the most luxurious sneakers I’ve seen..my buddy bought some Christiam Louboutain sneakers.. low rise, tennis style shoes in red snake skin..ruby red.. totally ridiculous..to wear with his tux..$3000..niiiice
I’m not a fan of $300 plus fashion sneakers because at the end of the day they are still just sneakers. However, the brand is more interesting than other competitors in the luxury price range. Great presentation.
That a very bad argument.
❤️
Great review. Just a note - Stead is pronounced as "instead" 🙂
Are these the No. 8 or the Dark Cognac?
Cognac.
Was it UK 10 G or normal width?
Normal width 👍🏻
Amazing shoes, but too damn expensive.
Common Projects is mostly branding. Yes, they were early to the minimalist luxury sneaker game. Yes, they have a nice low profile and look great. Bu no, they are not worth their asking price. And no, the materials and construction are not that premium.
However, while I do thirst for a pair of CNs, I am also cognizant that the whole luxury sneaker thing is a bit silly. But hey, it's your or my $400+ so I guess we're all free to do as we please. If you like the look or the status symbolism of expensive white sneakers, knock yourself out. I just wish people wouldn't overstate the quality/premium aspect of Common Projects. And wish reviewers were a bit more scientific/methodical about their quality evaluations of products.
Anyway, last but not least ;-) I do enjoy this channel as I am also on the short side in stature and also appreciate the dressy yet casual style sensibilities of this channel. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism. Whenever someone produces consistent, high-quality content on YT or wherever, they deserve props. So... keep up the good work.
I've settled on buying no more than 60$ sneakers for my work shoe every 3 or 4 months. Doesn't matter how "good" or expensive they are. They are trashed in three months and I stretch it to 4 months. I'm trying to figure out if there is a better way. Boots I just end up splitting the sole in half from crouching. And they tend to be hard on the feet after 10 hours. Do I just keep buying cheap I guess midgrade sneakers? And throwing them away?
I bought white sneakers from CN for almost 300 Euro and they still look good after 3 years. So either you buy shoes every 4 months or you buy good quality sneakers that will last very long.
Why would you wear luxury shoes like this to work? The shoes in this video are the opposite of work shoes.
@Somerandom Person did I say i was gonna buy these to work in? Lol dumass reading comprehension
You know they are comfortable when they look like clow shoes.
There's a newer company called Opie Way them and make their shoes in North Carolina
Opie Way are not in any reasonable way comparable to Crown Northampton. They are comparable to Common Projects as they use the same cheap leather and Margom soles.
Stylish 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 🤪👑😘
Big fan bro keepit up im also want to become fashion influencer any tips?
Thank you! I write about the business side of what I do at fulltimeblog.com if you want to check that out 😎
€900 can get me a clapped out Honda CB250 👀
Could you talk about investing on your channel? Roth IRAs, 403b/401k, IBAs, etc. I think it would help young guys in their journey to being a responsible man!
You should try sneakers made by a company called Opie way
Opie Way are not in any reasonable way comparable to Crown Northampton. They are comparable to Common Projects as they use the same cheap leather and Margom soles.
mine came with a bunch of cuts and indentation marks. poor QC
I hope you sent them back for a refund then?
Sure Crown sneaks are great but it's too hard to say no to Beckett Simonon's 2 pairs for 189 deal 🤷🏻♂️
Can’t argue with that!
What about leather boots? How do you like wolverine 1000 mile boots? I love them.
I haven't tried them but always liked how they look.
@@BrockMcGoff 👍 Modest Man, indeed!
the left shoe gives me pain its not like the right show at all
Then get in touch with customer service for them to fix it. I had a problem with mine where the cork bed on the left shoe was uneven so Crown shipped it back and fixed it then sent the shoes back. They are very willing to help, even if their service does take ages. However I notice some discomfort with my pair because the side walls sit just below my ankle, meaning when I walk they bite into them and cause chafing. I am hoping this improves as they break in.
They also have lower priced sneaker, wonder how are those
Review of the white ones here czcams.com/video/tZoTz8dMuso/video.html
Those shoes look very British. I’m suddenly speaking like Peppa Pig. Muddy puddles!
Those white sneakers look like nurse footwear. My cordovon sneakers took 2 months from placing my order to delivery. Way too long.
hard sell to have someone spend close to 1k on a pair of sneakers. I understand the materials being used, but end of the day a white sneaker is a white sneaker. If you can afford it go for it I suppose.
...and a car is a car? A watch is a watch? A house is a house? I am sure you will develop more refined taste as you age.

Finally! some sneaker porn!
I guess it was inevitable that someone would make a cost no object sneaker eventually. I appreciate the effort, and even the notion of pure luxury as very much like a bespoke suit or shoes, 99% of the world won't even notice.
But some products are lifetime purchases. A bespoke suit, Goodyear welted shoes, a luxury watch. Not so sneakers.
That said, they are not for me. Not necessarily because I can't afford them, but because I need someone to tell me how these sneakers are orders of magnitude better than the next best luxury sneakers you can buy, never mind regular old sneakers you can pick up for $60 or $70.
These have a cork midsole, a veg tanned leather counter, and a veg tanned leather insole, which means that it's built like a boot. Not only do these materials conform to your feet and become more comfortable once you break them in, these materials are also super long lasting. $60 shoes usually use synthetic innards, which are fine, but nothing synthetic(that I've seen) can match the durability of natural materials. Shell Cordovan leather is also one of, if not the most durable and long-lasting leathers out there(so long as you condition it). These shoes will last ages, and you can even resole them!
Now it's perfectly fine if you don't like these sneakers and don't want to buy them.(They're $900) But imo they're unquestionably better quality than any $60 or even $400 sneaker out there.
If you want to learn more about then I recommend checking out Rose Anvil's video on them.
Also, I do agree with you about not wanting to buy these. If I'm getting Shell Cordovan shoes I'd rather spend my money on oxfords or boots rather than sneakers.
@@anonymousotter6455 I appreciate shell cordovan shoes or boots, but sneakers? It is rather like buying a luxury T shirt. Yes, it can be done, but T shirts by definition are cheap, arguably throwaway items.
For years and years, that was sort of the point of sneakers. You wear them and when they wear out, you buy another pair.
I am curious though how much the recraft on a pair of these costs, and whether any cobbler can do it, or do you need to send them back to Northampton?
@@martintanz9098 As far as I know, Crown Northampton can resole them for you if you send it back to them. But I don't know if your local cobbler could do it.
Nonsense! Shoes degrade, you walk on them. I can see them being several hundred, but almost $1k is a rip off.
You can get new soles put on but it might be a bit expensive if you aren't in England.
At the time of Men at Arms, Samuel Vimes earned thirty-eight dollars a month as a Captain of the Watch, plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots, the sort that would last years and years, cost fifty dollars. This was beyond his pocket and the most he could hope for was an affordable pair of boots costing ten dollars, which might with luck last a year or so before he would need to resort to makeshift cardboard insoles so as to prolong the moment of shelling out another ten dollars.
Therefore over a period of ten years, he might have paid out a hundred dollars on boots, twice as much as the man who could afford fifty dollars up front ten years before. And he would still have wet feet.
Without any special rancour, Vimes stretched this theory to explain why Sybil Ramkin lived twice as comfortably as he did by spending about half as much every month.”
Sure shoes degrade, but these shoes WILL last and are definitely not a rip off for $1K - you just don't value the shoe to be worth to spend 1K on it (which is fair enough but it is a difference)
If the only people reviewing a product were sent it for free, that's a clear sign the price of the product is not competitive for its value
To the people who own a crown northhampton shoe. Are they extremely durable shoes? I'm looking for a shoe I can wear for the rest of my life lol
Watch the rose anvil video on these shoes. These shoes can be resoled, too. And she'll cordovan lasts forever. These are a good candidate to last you forever for sure!
The gum sole is very soft so I doubt it is super durable. But the leather uppers are very well made.
they look heavy
Great video but the mic and mic stand is too intrusive.
I like Rolex watch
Same.
Extremely overpriced. Furthermore, the leather is way too thick and together with the bulb like silhouette makes it look like a clowns shoe.
Edit: I have since learned more about the pricing of this shoe and I was wrong to call it overpriced.
You’re conflating “expensive” and “overpriced”. These are expensive, but they’re not overpriced. That would imply they have an unnecessarily big mark up compared to other sneakers.
@@BrockMcGoff Which I am sure they have. And I have been a professional in the shoe business for a while with people who own their own factory as well. In classic menswear 'quality' is used as a marketing tool, fooling people into thinking that somehow there still is a relationship between quality and price. There is but it's ever so thin. Look at Brioni, Zegna, Cuccinelli etc. But maybe I'm wrong, UK has a high labor price.
@@mrjellow Shell cordovan leather, oak bark tanned counter, cork footbed, hevea lactea sole, UK labour, etc. make it expensive. It is not just expensive just to rip people off.
@@richardl.currier4052 yeah, the cordovan leather is not overpriced. The cow's leather shoe hmmm...maybe.
@@mrjellow The calfskin shoes have all the same features above, except the cordovan. It's very well priced either way.
Hey CZcamsr.. Yes, you that are the modest man. Can I give you an adviser for your channel and your work? If yes? write me. I am a professional writer that can give you some great advise about at how to improve your videos.
Wouldn’t pay 20 bucks
Sorry, not gonna watch a seven minute ad for $900 sneakers
Common Projects are actually trash quality according to the dude that cuts shoes in half
That video was very misleading.
@@BrockMcGoff thanks for making this video though. I’ve never heard of Crown NH and I’ll def be getting a pair of their white high tops, their prices are pretty fair. I have a pair of white JM Westons and I love ‘em, I’d love to know your thoughts on those on a future video.
promotion video... great shoes but over hype / bias review
This isn't a review.
@@BrockMcGoff so do you mean it was purely a marketing/promotional piece? I would be disappointed were that the case.
@@somerandomperson8282 you should be disappointed when sponsored videos are presented as "reviews", which is something I don't do. If a brand pays to be featured, it's a promotional piece. My only aim is to be honest about that.
Plain stupid to spend this much money 💰 on a pair of sneakers 👟 they don’t make you look any better. Stay simple and pay simple price it’s more worth it man 👨
and yet they're still sneakers which men over 18 should not wear
$900 for sneakers? Seriously? are you kidding me! I would call that insanity! That's a month's rent. I need to unsubscribe. I don't want to criticize but your live in a very different world.
You spend that much on alcohol
been wearing their white whole cut for a couple years, very happy, see #roseanvil
