    I am the grandson of late Percy Martin and I am amazed that you know the real history of our perique Tobacco.My dad Leo Martin was actually the only person responsible for us still having Perique,he had grown plants and regenerated the seeds and kept us going when all the other farmers had giving it up for years.We used to sell our tobacco to Poche farms until the late 90s because the market for it was so bad that we had to keep our crop and hold it for years.We had to find and create a new market for it with American Spirits tobacco Co. and after that Mark Ryan came and bought out Poche farms and my family was very generous and gave them seeds and then they were able to start harvesting and shipped to Virginia to blend with the original Poche farms were doing years before.Thanks for the video and enjoy the Perique we cherish and put a lot of hard work in it !!!

      Wow! I'm humbled and thankful that you watched my video! Your family's legacy regarding the production of Perique is nothing short of heroic in the world of tobacco. And I don't just mean in terms of those that enjoy smoking it, I mean in terms of preserving a true piece of American culture and tradition. Had it not been for the Martin family, this part of our culture and history would be lost. I enjoy Perique everyday. I can't imagine losing the richness and flavor it provides to my daily pipe. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video and for your delightful comment. Blessings to you and your family.

    I’m with you 100%. I have some D&R Decade Series Perique that I like by itself. It has the dark, rich, stewy aroma and flavor-both meaty and fruity-you describe. It. Is. Not. Spicy. I’m convinced the spiciness in VaPers comes from the Virginia. When I blend it with DFK, burley, and cavendish…no spice. Replace the cavendish by any variety of Virginia I’ve tried…spice.
    Side note: I was fortunate to have this Perique recommended by Mark Ryan in person at the Raleigh expo a couple years ago. I love how personable and approachable the rock stars of the industry often are. He was no exception, and took quite a bit of time educating me on the process and different varieties he had on hand-and I’m sure he imparted just a fraction of what he knows. He asked a lot of questions about my tastes before making the recommendation, and boy did he get it spot on.

      That's awesome! Mark Ryan deserves a medal of honor for saving the Perique industry. I haven't met any of the pipe stars in person but I did have a good interaction with Russ Oulette in a forum a while back. It's been my experience that pipe folk are good folk. You may have just convinced me to try and find some of that D&R perique. Take care, my friend, and thanks for watching!

    I know it as an wet pottingsoil kind of flavor. Pepper taste, but not the mouthfeel. Earthy indeed. And I am glad someone mentions it as a salt to tobacco! It brings out the flavors of the other tobaccos used! Try a vaper without the perique and to me it’s the same flavors but just toned down. I told you about the toms twist 50/50 Kentucky and perique.. It is so smooth.. earthy, leather, sour. Starts with a pepperblast, but mellows out pretty fast. Just like a strong Nicaraguan cigar! That mushroom flavor you mentioned really makes sense and I am most likely to pick that out next time I smoke that twist! I’ve smoked 10 bowls at least, but was not able to identify its flavors fully. This video adds a lot for me! Thank you botl🤎

    I love the stuff.. I think it is the deciding factor in my choosing Bayou Night, Old Joe and Haunted Bookshop as my favorites..
    I once heard ABOUT ( not 1st hand) an old timer who said; "if you have a blend that just doesn't quite work for you, start adding Perique, and keep doing so until it's right"...

I hope you keep up with your videos. It is nice to watch a pipe smoker that can explain their ideas on blending etc.😎 typically I blend with granulated perique so I can control the amount in a blend.I smoke all of my blending tobaccos straight in order to continuously know how they taste for me.

      @@ThereAndTobacAgain did it! Kind of a raisin\prune taste at first, then it went mushroom. Pepper at the back of the throat all the way through. Retrohale was not bad at anytime. I usually get that horseradish burn with va-pers, this was not overly strong. Not bad at all, although I used a tiny bowled meer.

      @@jeffthechefpiper8227 Awesome, Jeff! Great description too! That's my experience too, flavor is there but nothing too strong as one might assume. That horseradish flavor (another good flavor description) is one I usually find in VaPers too but I attribute that to a matured Va that usually has some vinegar used in the casing process, i dont get that note on Perique alone. Glad you took the challenge!

    Learned a lot from this video. It's starting to make sense, because I'm not a huge fan (so I thought) of perique, but then everytime I've tried it (with the exception of Foxfire) all had Orientals. I'll definitely need to experiment a little more with this and think of it as an enhancer. Thank you for sharing this presentation. Be well 👍🍂🔥💨 JB

    Hello, may I ask you some questions. What sort of tobacco leaf is using to make a Perique? Can you explain how to made a Periqu on you own at home? Maybe you will show 'cooking procces' on your channel someday.

    • @ThereAndTobacAgain
      @ThereAndTobacAgain  Před 3 lety

      Hey Dmitry, thanks for the question. You can technically make a tobacco like perique at home but to be true Perique, it must be made in St. James Parrish, Louisiana. It also uses a specific tobacco variant, which is a type of Burley. The process takes a year of careful tending and truly requires a master's touch to properly produce it. There is a great video on CZcams that discusses how it's produced, you might check that out. The in-depth and lengthy process, and the fact that it's only made in small batches, is why Perique is a rare tobacco and why it truly can't be made at home.

    • @Damon_916
      @Damon_916 Před 3 lety

      @@ThereAndTobacAgain I appreciate your detailed reply, Logan! Thank you. That is the question, either how is exactly called that specific tobacco variant or how literally named that genuine type of Burley? Might be somebody sells kind of seeds or something of this one anyway. I have seen kind of video about touristic excursion or something alike in St. James Parrish, Louisiana. Is it what you meant?

    Just bought 4 oz today. Mixed 1 oz with 12 oz with a latakia blend. Have not smoked perique on its own but will. What I discovered being pipe smoker for 47 years it made me slight dizzy. What made me go for it I smoked Match NightCap and enjoy it. Have no idea percentage of perique in nightcap. Taste how I blended with a latakia blend I enjoy. And how you describe it find most accurate. Should I add more Latakia dealing with the dizziness or more perique? Thanks again for this topic.

    It was too wet and smelt like dead dog

    • @ThereAndTobacAgain
      @ThereAndTobacAgain  Před 11 měsíci

      Perique is musty, almost like a freshly dug up mushroom. That said, it sounds like you may have gotten a moldy batch, which is unfortunate. It happens occasionally with wet tobaccos though I've not encountered it with perique. You might reach out to the producer and provide them the batch number on the can, they might be able to tell you if there was an issue and, hopefully, provide you a replacement. Better fortunes in the future!
