  • *It has come to my attention that the audio has gotten off sync somehow in this video. My apologies, I'm not sure how to fix it.
    This is a comparison of Tiger tank variants and the 1:35 scale model kits available to make them from Dragon and Tamiya. This video is meant for those modelers who want to make a Tiger tank but aren't sure about which kits are good, or what version of a Tiger to make.

    Excellent videos Adam. Really has helped me get through the weeds of all the different kits, etc. and what I should look for and stay away from. I've been a modeler for decades but mostly 1-32 scale aircraft and various scale cars and race cars. Just really getting in to tanks, and it's almost like a new hobby again for me. Thanks to you and a couple other good channels helping find my way. Keep up the good work sir!

    a very interesting video, i built or have seen most of the kits you showed there and it was nice to hear what you think of them. i actually like the tamiya tiger a lot aswell, maybe it is the kit i built most often. i think at least 4 times and still enjoyable :)

      Hamilkar Barkas I like the Tamiya Tigers fine, as long as you get some PE for the grills. I replace the tracks as well but that's not necessary for everyone. I've built 2 of those, and it certainly was the kit that got me truly in to Tigers.

      IMHO, the Tiger I has an intimidating appearance. It also represents the most sophisticated & dangerous tank to come from that generation of tank designs around the world. Furthermore, a number of legendary tank commanders graduated up to the Tiger I, so there is a lot of history & impressive stories attached to the Tiger I. Finally, because of the necessary limitations of the armour fielded by the western allies, the Tiger became a symbol for those who believe in the superiority of all German equipment, a myth that has been perpetuated for the last 70+ years.

    Adam, I appreciate your comments and information! I am several steps below you in terms of detail and accuracy, but I enjoy the research, assembling, and painting of model tanks! My son and I had a laugh from your comments on the first Tamiya Tiger kit. That was my first German tank model, purchased in 1975 [from of all places, K-Mart!] for $7.50. Not only do I still have it, but my son purchased another one for me [minus the motor] from a military model show last November for $10.00! Three-digit prices for any 1/35 scale vehicle is way out of my league, and I'm sure many others as well,especially those like my son just starting into model building and collecting. So thanks for explaining how to get the accuracy with economy!

    O.K. Adam, I just finished watching the video in its entirety. I am very impressed sir very well done. I put this in my favorites box right away for future reference. In my very humble opinion this is The definitive guide on buying Tigers for the uninitiated or simply those who want to know more. The amount of back ground information as well as the detailed explanation of each kit is just fantastic. I would give this video 2 "likes" if that were possible. Well done bud...well done. It would nice to see you do a follow up or companion piece on the AFV Club Tigers at some point. I know Coen is not a big fan but I think they represent an excellent value for the money.

    since you mention that those kits are not "amazing", could you make a list of the most "amazing" kits you know of? (Ideally with a less cheesy title.)

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  Před 8 lety +11

      +Military History I'm not really sure what you mean, but i prefer Dragon to everyone else. So Dragon 6383 which is a late with Zimmerit, 6700 which is a mid production with Zimmerit, 6730 which is a later type early, 6820 which is an early early of Tiger 131 from Bovington tank museum, and 6608 which is an initial from the North African campaign. That's pretty much the best of each version of a Dragon Tiger kit covering all of the primary variants. I'm currently building Rye Field Model's early with full interior, which isn't as good of a fit as Dragon, but is quite detailed and I could recommend if you want to build a full interior kit.
      The title was meant to mimic the book series which educates people on a subject they want to learn about but have little knowledge of. It was meant to advertise what sort of information I was giving, and it's worked very well.

    There was a collector in California who has assembled and restored dozens of real tanks from all wars. They are beautiful. He has an authentic Tiger tank, in mint condition, and I was allowed to get inside of it as a photographer. It was stunning inside. Large blocks of machined alloys and extremely high precision fittings. Just astonishing. The Tiger tank seemed to be the apex of military vehicles I had ever seen. The museum had Russian tanks, Chinese tanks, English, and US tanks, as well as German tanks. There were tiny tanks from WWI, and current tanks from the Russian army. Beautiful. I believe he closed his private museum and possibly sold off some of the tanks. He had a full shop with workers restoring tanks, and had just fished this Tiger from a River in Europe, where it had been submerged for fifty years. He brought it back to mint running condition, including (non functioning) weapons and all accessories. The museum was somewhere near San Jose in the hills. I forget the name of the guy or the location.

      There were no D.A.K. Tigers. By which I mean, the Afrikakorps were never issued any Tigers.
      The first 17 Tigers sent to Africa had a different set of mudguards to the later ones. This included the bent front mudflaps, but in fact all around the tank the sheet-metal items were different to the eventual "standard" version. Dozens of Tigers went to the Eastern Front with non standard side skirts.
      Tigers at training schools were usually powered by compressed gas cylinders. Charcoal gas is a different system and has only been seen at the factory, when newly built hulls were getting a test run.

    great video and good advice. I watched this again as I just bought the Tamiya mid Tiger. Its a little dissapointing, detail wise and even parts wise. compared to the RFM Tiger which I bought when it came out, the Tamiya kit is in the stone age. OK, that was a bit harsh. Not quite. But you get my point. The RFM kit was £40 and the Tamiya was £26 but needs pe grills. Anyway, I digress.....great video. Also, fyi on eBay, the US sites are always cheaper than eBay UK or Europe. In other words when you say for example that Tiger blah is $45 which is £30.....yes, mathematically that is correct. BUT in the real world, a $45 Tiger will be a £45 Tiger. I know you are just helping people with a guide, but I travel to tne US once a year and always look out for stuff on eBay US cos it is a lot cheaper. So its just to give YOU an idea of prices overseas.

    Italerie released a kit lately to rebuilt the WoT Tiger. Interesting thing is that you can actually choose between three versions. 1. The late Tiger E with zimmerit. 2. without zimmerit. 3. there is an early turret as well so therefore you apparently can also go for the Fehrmann Tiger which is kinda cool because the kit is not that expensive by less than 50€.

    Retailers at the shows, which is where I buy some kits, have always put me off buying Tigers from them, they are generally £60 and up, in fact, that goes for most Dragon kits.
    I buy most of my kits on eBay, as there are no local hobbies stores in the city I live, however, even today, the cheapest Dragon mid Tiger is £56, and has held that price for years, the Michael Wittmann early Tiger 1 with crew is £67.
    Even the Cyber Hobby orange box kits retail for £35 and up, and thats not thier Tiger, but more their PZIII ect.
    I think the cheapest I've seen them in the UK, was £33, and that was over five years ago.
    Other than that, it was a enjoyable video.

    I believe models are usually expensive because shipping them is expensive. By shipping, I mean in a container, going over The Pacific or The Atlantic. 1/35 scale tank is about the same space as a gaming laptop, which is $800-$1000. iPad pro 12.9in box is smaller yet costs $800. Not to mention smart phones nowadays.
    I am not justifying the high price tag. There are certainly people jacking some models price up just because they are special, but in general they are expensive.
    I may get a few to start buidling early 2018. I still have a Mighty Mo sitting on my shelf, not started yet.

    Hey there Adam. I have watched this video at least 3 times now. What you went over in this video has helped me narrow down what my first tiger 1 would be. I went with the Tamiya 65216 early. I think that's the right model. The dragons obviously appear to be better. But I'm on a bit of a budget, and could not really justify spending that much on my second model. Anyways, seeing that I will have the early production tiger 1 I was wondering what paint schemes I could apply to it. I didn't want to go with just a solid color, I'd like for there to be camo on it. But I also want it to be historically accurate. Thank you again for providing this video, it was most certainly informational. I look forward to hearing from you.

Problem is I want to build a mid production Tiger AND I want to do my own zimmerit so that I can work in lots of battle damage. But Dragon's mid production version comes with zimmerit which I don't want. Is there anything you recommend to help?

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  Před 9 lety

      Brodka4Realz I'm not sure what you should do there. That is the only Dragon Mid I know of that isn't stupidly expensive. I think, and I don't have the sprues handy but I think there'd be all the parts in the box for the hull without Zimmerit. The turret though would have ZImmerit. The Cyber-Hobby white box 6660 doesn't have molded on Zim but it's rare so it'd be expensive.

      @@AdamMann3D cool! I just bought a zimmerit kit for a panther G for my jagdpanther 2 tank destroyer kit from amusing hobbies! It was cancelled to make the E30 ir something not quite sure yet on that still trying to find abit of history on the project! It's a nice kit really nice detail and the wheels and drive sprocket and idler are stunningly crisp sharp detail the zimmerit kit came with loads of pre cut parts and because this mythical jagdpanther 2 kit I'm building wasn't built and created from world of tanks , you can pretty much play with alot of what ifs for detail! But tbh I'm not going daft that way just built out the box it's got loads of PE! The hull is the normal jagdpanther so alot fornthe hull I'm taking from.the jagdpanther and the super s is based on the Elephant with the rear mounted gun and it's the 128mm I'll swap out the MG ammo casing for the zimm one out the kit and and other port holes the only thing amusing hobbies have actually missed out completely is an exhaust system!! There just not one on the kit lol! So what iv done is watch a couple of videos on world of tanks and see theres exhaust smoke coming out from behind the 3rd steel road wheel! So took abit of airtubing from my aquarium spare bit of course lol and recreated the up swept exhaust system on the rear but because it's got a crew hatch that opens like a 4x4 tailgate on a land rover top n bottom the PE skirts comes with 5 panels or 2 long bits of mesh to hang from the 3rd pannal back and the mesh to replace the 2 rear ammo skirts! All starting to come together with the 3rd road wheel exhaust ports! And cut another peice of tubeing to go over the exhausts to create a heat shield! And its looking Brilliant lol! Abit of weathering and rusting up and its gonna look pretty cool with side exhaust like an old Corvette stingray! Lol staring to really like this build now! Wasn't to into it at start not being a real machine but if this thing was built I reckon it could have been the game changer! Lol

    Great vids Adam.
    As for the Panthers from Dragon, they are steps further in detail as Tamiya... as I stash the Panthers!
    The Panther G's SW, Late, Rgt 26 and the Zimmer are great...even with some slight modifications you can back date these easy to June/July...so with these kits you can easy spread a large conflict area.
    As I use Friul tracks and not used the DS, the DS tracks need some glory...the DS tracks are not that bad...when good packed;) but in detail they are good, the horns are really well detailed and are molded with the correct open horns, the smal profile on the tracks are sharp....however they are not that swinging as a Friul or MK, but as a standard one piece track hey are well detailed and very flexible, with the correct paint work they are very serviceable!
    Keep going Adam, are you on ML?

      +Adam Mann Could I ask your assistance a bit beyond this video. I draw attention to the sections of your video regarding 6253 (Tiger 3-in-1 with extras), and 6406, which in your words, is the same kit, minus the goodies.
      I have just received a 6253 kit, however, in the box, it does not have the goodies box, like metal barrel, shackles etc. It does have PE grills, and few other PE bits. It has the [H] sprues with the tracks, but also DS tracks. Also, the decals sheet is not what I see on other pictures it should be, it is smaller, with less options.
      The box says it is 6253, and even the (in my opinion) reduced decals sheet has 6253 written on it. The PE bits (excluding the grills) come one a sheet MA-6700 (if this has any meaning to you).
      So, my thinking is, I have gotten 6406, but packaged in a 6253 box.
      But then in 18:16 in your video you have the instruction sheet side by side of 6253 and 6406. My instruction sheet looks more like 6406 as is shows the DS tracks and MB metal grills on the bottom, but it clearly is printed Kit 6253.
      Dragon site itself makes no mention of metal barrel etc anymore in this kit (6253)... It's all quite confusing - so my question is; since making this video, did Dragon rebox 6253 with less bits and call it the same thing, or am I being taken for a ride by the seller?
      I appreciate you taking the time to help with this, if you can.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  Před 8 lety

      +hagakure81 dragon recently reboxed 6253 without the goodies, and you are exactly right it is essentially 6406. They should have renumbered the kit or made mention of the changes. I'm going to make a second video since they did this after I made this video.

    • @hagakure81
      @hagakure81 Před 8 lety

      Thanks for the quick reply.
      Thats a pretty dirty trick in my opinion. I've just gone thru the list and there is a lot missing.
      And yes, if they were going to rebox, they should have put a different number on it.
      I've been looking at this the last hour or so, from your video, to reviews showing the parts etc. This is my conclusion:
      It is essentially kit 6406, as you said the sprues are essentially the same.
      Missing from it are the magic tracks, instead you get DS tracks. The DS tracks do have the hole in them, not the solid horns.
      Missing is the goodies box. So no metal barrel, shackles, steel wire, PE fenders and exhaust shrouds.
      The PE that is included is metal grills, and a small sheet marked MA-6700. Further in your video you do cover kit 6700, I take it they simply threw the PE from 6700 into the "new" 6253.
      The decal sheet is substantially less than what I have seen for 6253. However I don't have either 6406 or 6700 to tell you if this is what has been thrown in the kit or not.
      I can confirm that none of the kit pieces have zimmerit included, so its not pieces from 6700. At least for the hull etc.
      There is no figure with this kit.
      There are not transparent styrene parts.
      from misc.kitreview.com/armourreviews/dml6253reviewcs_1.htm I got the following list. I'll mark an [x] next to what IS in the kit, anything else is missing. www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=997 has pictures of the sprues etc. to crossreference.

    Great video, thanks for making it. Have you seen or heard anything about the Tamiya Late Version Tiger I, kit #25401?

      +KEM451 You're very welcome, I'll have to do an updated version of this as many Tiger kits have come out in the last year. 25401 is a rebox of 35146 with figures.
