4 EASY Chipping Tricks For Beginners

- I think most of us can agree that chipping is not an easy technique. It takes practice, experience and patience to make it look in scale and interesting.
Badly painted chips can destroy an entire scale model that you spent months building and painting, so one would think it’s best to just avoid chipping rather than try and learn the do’s and don'ts.
In this video I’ll share a few tips which I learned over the years and then show you 4 easy techniques that I guarantee will make you a better… chipper?

Which trick did you find the most useful?
I need new brush 😮
All of them!
Sponge!
🗣All of them !!!!😁👍
The small brush chipping looks very helpful - will have to try it on the next model (even if it is a plane ;))
wow MARETU i didn't know you were into these stuffs, very cool.
Maretu has a such an interesting playlist.
yup
Lol yeah
I think I first found this video through that playlist as well
lol Yes

I dont even do this. Yet I'm so fascinated and couldnt stop watching and admiring
Brian yeah i also thought so. Maybe it was not related to the photo
Meeeee tooooo!!! 😸
Vids like this made me purchase my first model (an A10 warthog) that I built and used rattle can and brush paint on I just used a paper tovwel and a ton of paint for the wash
Handy for warhammer models too
"That's still not horrible enough"... Exactly my approach to weathering.
😁👍
Haha, well that's certainly one way to approach it!
One thing that has to be remembered. What do tank crews get to do when not in combat? Well, their commanders find them jobs, like any other branch of the armed forces. “Right, you lot! The old tin can is looking scruffy, go paint it!” So while use in combat will cause scratches and chips, the paint itself may be pretty unweathered and there maybe not much rust. This is very true for tanks from the WW2 Normandy battles, the allied tanks having been fully serviced and prepared before the invasion and the German vehicles being mostly from regiments resting and rearming after service on the Eastern front. So early on in the battle, vehicles would have looked pretty pristine. Later on, after the battle if Normandy and the drive across France and the low countries, vehicles would have looked much more tired. The German crews were given gallons of Panzer yellow, brown & green to paint their own camo, which is why there are no standard patterns.
@@SvenTviking And that's why choosing the right subject to paint and weather is important. I mostly select my models based on their weathering potential. But, and I've said this countless times and will keep saying it in the future as well, I'm fully aware my chipping has nothing to do with realism and I'm perfectly okay with that. I simply enjoy the process and the results and I think that's the most important in our hobby.
if my guard tank doesn't look like its been sitting in a wed field for 50 years its not weathered enough
I remember the day I discovered weathering. Change my whole perspective on model building.
That's the day when I became obsessed with scale modelling. I was 12
Same for me. I used to love my trains clean and neat until I saw a weathered train car. Changed everything for me.
Im 12 xd and im obsested with models
Factoid:
When filming the old Samurai based series, Shogun, the western set builders working with traditional Japanese set builders introduced an until then unknown and untried technique to Japanese craftsmen...weathering.
Each house and room was built to the usual insane quality and spec of traditional carpentry and then the Japanese got really confused because the westerners then started to "Age" everything in a further step that at first irked them...until they finished and explained that now the buildings looked truly weathered and older.
...and thusly Japanese set builders learnt for the 1st time about making things look like they had been in place and in use for a long time which they had never ever done themselves in cinema or TV productions over there.
Weathering....it's what makes things look authentic.
That's very maretu of you
0:11 "badly painted chipping"
b-but that looks good.
elronman right?!
are you blind way to jarring and large *gips*
No, that looks like a mass-produced cheap Chinese toy. Not being negative, but it just shows how much artistic talent is involved in realistic weathering.
That hull turret looks *ugly*
The longer you look at it, the worse it gets.
I just discovered this channel. Really clear explanation, good audio quality, engaging tone of the voice and beautiful content! Amazing!!!
indeed! Really good
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the section intros? Like 'Basic Stuff #1: Decide when to apply chipping'. The transition, voice modulation, everything. So clever in so many ways.
Stuff number drie lol
When did maretu add this to the fav playlist
Martin, I noticed how well you demonstrated the chipping effects during the eleven minute segment. Even when using a "bad" technique and inferior brushes, you managed to produce a highly respectable finished piece. I guess your talent transcends your tools. Excellent job. Thanks.
Thank you Maretu very cool
I think at the end of the day it's the final result, and the happiness of the modeller with their final creation, that matters most - in saying that I have learned a few things from you here Nightshift, which just goes to show even after over 40 years of modelling (including several bouts as a professional modeller) there is always room for learning new techniques, and nobody knows it all...many thanks for the entertaining videos Sir!
I am working on my first armor model after building race cars for the last 40 years, and I just watched this video for the 5th time. You have taught me more about how to make a tank look like I want it to in 20 minutes than anything else I have learned about it in decades. Now I’ll have a go on the Tamiya Panther G chipping with confidence, great video.
This is definitely one of the most informative and entertaining weathering videos I’ve seen this week, and I only got my first RC tank a week ago :)
Thanks for the help
I’ll tell you now I subscribed in the first minute. This is great. I’ve been modeling for over 35 years and your the first with both techniques and humour. Congrats.
I may be one of the worst model makers in existence, and yet I can find this more interesting than action movies because it’s engaging
Life changing. I wish I could show everyone this so nobody on the gunpla subreddit has to ask if their weathering is good. This is THE video to watch
Getting ready to learn this for the first time (I'll be practicing on a soup can) - this is one of the very best tutorials on the topic that I've found. Great camera work, terrific examples, very good explanations about why things are done (as opposed to many videos that are just "watch me" - I'm not knocking those, but they aren't always useful for beginners). And, good sense of humor. That alone is difficult in one's second language. Thanks so much for this! Definitely saved.
I know this is a older video but thanks . I've been building scale models for 40 years and I've tried every technique imaginable as well as always try to come up with and try new techniques but my reason for my comment is to simply say thank you for taking the time to share these techniques with everyone. Every time I watch one of your videos your positive attitude is very contagious un like covid that's a very bad type of contagious your positive attitude is a good type of contagious lol. I've forgotten so many of the techniques that you share and show simply because after doing this for so many years I basically run on autopilot but its 100% a great thing to have a refresher course. Thank you again night shift
This was amazing, very well explained - can’t wait to apply this to my next model. Thank you so much.
"Badly painted chipping can ruin your model and take precious months off of the one, single existence you have been granted here on Earth."
[shows model that looks better than any of my work]
:(
I'm sure it's not just you and I who had that experience :-)
✔️✔️Exactly, and its because badly painted chips ruin models, that I switched to a more direct, accurate, genuine method for creating them! For instance, many chips seen on real German tanks were caused by non-penetrating fire from allied infantry or armored vehicles. So, I realized I could best recreate that look, by taking my Jagdpanther and Tiger II models out to the local gun range and shooting them with .30-06, .50 BMG ball rounds, and some British 6pdr armor piercing rounds.
But when the smoke cleared, and I walked downrange to assess the results, i learned that scale matters! It turns out that ALL of the aforementioned rounds had a significantly greater "effect" on my tiny, plastic models than they do with actual full sized armored vehicles made of very thick steel! I'm sure I'll remember to apply that lesson the next time I build a model tank! 😉
@@HighlanderNorth1 They had us in the first half, not gonna lie
Yeah. That one looked pretty decent and realistic to my eye. I guess its his own work and he is overly critical or something but there is that one spot in there that could be better I think.
OMG loved this i am getting back into modelling after long time im old school an your FXs are huge transformations i did cars made them look like mini versions motor detail was skimpy at best now? OMG aftrr market motor wiring kits? interiors? so excited !! have several tanks never worked on WILL NOW !! thank you so much
This is by far the most intelligent and well explained video on paint chipping I've come across. Following the techniques is easy and the results are amazing. Probably the best piece of advice given in the video is 'patience'.
When you are ready to try these methods, put on some good music and just take your time!
I followed the video for my first time at trying to paint chip a 1/35 scale tank and I'm so impressed with what I managed to acheive.
Thanks buddy! Your video was an immense help.
Only just came across this channel. Really enjoyed the video and explanation. Great focus on technique and showing all the detail. So often other modelling channels sort show / explain it but in the end you are still left wondering. Your video is great... funny too 😁. This will really help my chipping... T34-85 next to do... Thanks so much for posting... 👍👍👍
Thanks brother! Not a lot of vids out there showing someone how to do this like a pro. Big upps! You rock!
Placing 3rd order for my minis this week, discovered very good store with almost everything I need, I see chipping bottles and I wonder the heck that is. Coming here and grabbing my jaw out of the floor. This. Is. INCREDBILE! Can't wait to try this, thank you!
I’m about to try chipping for the first time, and this is by far the best tutorial I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing. I now feel confident I can do a decent job.
Instant hit ! Excellent information and great techniques explained clearly with just the right amount of humour - Subscribed
Honestly the “that’s not horrible enough “ part is something I like, I like the look of that much “sponged on” paint to make chipping and such which is what I’ll probably use from now on since I never do chipping for my kits
INSIGHTFUL, EDUCATIONAL, ENTERTAINING, HUMOROUS AND DYNAMIC... and not to mention enjoyable.
Ive only watched a half dozen of your videos (all of which was tonight) and having not made a model in over 25 years your truly an exceptional talent not only as a artist but as an educator. Now I don’t won’t to sound like some kind of fan boy, but as a 50 y/o hairstylist/business owner who’s trained main apprentices, i feel like I have some knowledge when it comes to education and creativity.... continue the great work... very impressive.
As someone who is getting ready to weather and chip my first model this was VERY helpful. Thanks!
Lovely stuff. I started doing rust zones years ago after seeing Wilder do it. It's such a good technique.
Rust zones eh? That's what the cool kids call it these days? Good to know, it'll make me sound more professional!
Oh damn! I have seen the build of your Combat Bulldozer in the modeling magazine "Super Model" and always thought it looked amazing. Never realized you had a CZcams Channel! Thanks for the awesome video, there certainly are some things I can improve with my chips, like using a light color besides the dark steel with the sponge, or using a bit thinner paint on the brush chipping. You absolutely saved my Karl Gerät!
Love the voice, the jokes, the Tutorials are great structured and in general just a joy to watch. Always learning something new and happy to paint again. Makes Hobbytime and an important part of my life much better. Thanks!!
The best class I have seen of effects, I am one of those modelers who are just starting out and want to see the whole model worn out. To put into practice everything seen 🤗🙌🎨

Well, it looks like CZcams has finally recommended a channel I might enjoy.
Great quality video and sound. And a bit of humor is always welcome.
Naturally... subscribed... and ding, ding, too.
That, sir, is the best chipping technique video on CZcams.
Just used your technique for rust and weathering on my 'Tamiya 1/35 Chieftan Mk5' video...Brilliant technique and really effective...Thanks for all your tutorial vids..they are so helpful to new modellers like me...Big thank you!
Congrats 🎉🎉
you’re a good person because MARETU made a playlist with u in it
My favorite detailing brush BY FAR is "The Psycho" ... such great control and precision..
I love how you go back in and blend the work together, very nice result
By far the best and funniest model maker I’ve watched! 😂🤣😂
Congrats Night Shift, you’ve been blessed by the almighty CZcams’s recommendation algorithm.
Papa bless!
@@NightShiftScaleModels I see you watch h3h3
I came across your channel and have become addicted to your work. I am a model railroader and some of my equipment will really benefit from weathering and chipping. Also, your foam carving is just eye opening. Nicely done!
This is a great tutorial video. I've tried my own ham fisted attempts on 28mm scale Wargame vehicles and even I managed to create something passable using the tips. Thanks!
Maretu what’s this playlist?
Just recently found your vids. Love your techniques and am learning a lot. Thanks for sharing Martin
Glad to have you on board! Thank you!
Legit one of the most helpful and thorough videos I've ever watched. Thank you!
I've been building models for over 30 years, and I must say, wow! Learned something new and exciting! I've been hooked on gunpla lately, this new way of weathering is going to look great! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I've been in the hobby "only" for about 23 years :)
I didn’t even know what chipping was, but I am here.
Thanks for the recommendation CZcams!
Been building models for many years, and I have always tried to avoid chipping. Just using washes and dry brushing. Though I've been pretty much happy with my builds, I have always felt they were missing something. After watching this video I plan on giving it a try on my next build (Most likely a WW2 Tank Destroyer). Thank you, nicely done detailed video. Subscribed.
You have single handedly inspired me to take my details to the next level I went from just painting a coat over a model and being done but the other night I started a new m48a2 Patton tank model and one of the miniatures had a flamethrower that was pretty small and you inspired me to do weathering and I had a rust and weathering kit of paints and I did some light rusting on the pack and it was only a little rust but I was so proud of myself cause it actually looks good
Hi Night Shift! I found your whole video useful! I am anxious about creating a good result in the first model I made with patience and maturity (a T-62A soviet tank) but your calm voice and thorough explanation of the techniques kept me relaxed and optimistic! Thank you very much for sharing your skills with us, keep up the good work!!!
I'm just learning how this stuff is done and it's amazing. I used to think that the sponge will do the job (yep, I have shaky hands) and have never tried a precise fine brush, but seeing how it affects the overall look of the model, I realize that mastering it is a must now =)
Thank you for the explanation and motivation to improve =)
When I'll grow up, I wanna do weathering like you
I'm building an IS-7 tank and this video is helping me a lot. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
I used to be afraid of using oil paints over Acrylics, but your tips helped me to get over this concern. I can't wait to try some of these techniques on my next, heavily weathered model.
Im a fan of those bass transitions!
Glad to hear that :D
Another excellent video! Best way to spend my lunch break :D
HA! I knew uploading at 6pm is the perfect time! :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels sorry but what was that tank at 1:26 ? turret lookt a little like tiger but modern
@@apocalypticsurvivor1881 it's BMP-3 with reactive armor. CLOSE ENOUGH :D
Everything on your tutorial is useful, thank you. I watch a lot of professional model makers, and unfortunately, they either don't have the time or have gotten into a routine where they don't put in the amount of detail any more. Keep on going man.
These are some of the best chipping tutorial vids I’ve seen. Thanks!
"let's assume you're not very patient or your hands are very shaky"

*Pats on back* it's ok man you're not alone
@@shadowprince5698 thanks man, it means a lot
I'm in this picture and I don't like it.
But isn't that the way it's supposed to look? How the hell does rust know your hand shakes,it's just rust. Shake away.
@@chrisroberts7900 that's fine for rust and dirt, but when I'm trying to paint Unit numbers on a tank while I'm shaking like Michael J Fox sitting on a paint shaker, well, it gets depressing
How thick do you have to be to dislike this video!? It's fricking awesome
Hello! Thanks for posting this. The idea of connecting the larger marks made by a sponge using a fine brush was a total revelation for me.
Amazing..
You are an artist in model painting, that's for sure..
I thank you for sharing your painting skills and experience you've learned for years, definitely worth while.
5:32 Yeah lol You have a like and a new sub 😂 I like the random comments during the video as jokes and thing. And the way you explain. Of course! Nice vid and tips. Thanks!

Who the heck down votes a high-quality video like this? So much great information here and the video is really well put together in terms of sharpness/focus, lighting, pacing. Great stuff - thanks for sharing!
Again you have helped me a grat deal. I am new to painting armor. But I have built them before. I watch as many of your videos as I can find. I am subscribed But a lot of times they don't notify me. I have learned so much from you and your techniques. I can't thank you enough for that. I will continue to watch your videos for a long time. I can never learn enough.

Thank you both and welcome!
Exactly. Subscribed not even halfway into the video ;-)
@@Krejza82 Thank you!
@@NightShiftScaleModels You're welcome. Haven't done any model in years (bike racing) yet I love to look at different techniques.
Especially the part about learning patience. I need to follow that path. Got distracted from it, for a time being.
Just put your model in front of a turbine, and blow lots of sand at it at high speeds. Instant results.
Aight lemme just pull out my T U R B I N E
TheNoseph it could actually work with a hair dryer
I have a small hand held sand blaster?
Thank you Martin. That was both facinating and helpful at the same time.
One of the best chipping videos I have ever seen.
Perfect tutorial, even I'm not a beginner anymore! Gonna try it on my Jagdtiger grrr grr
Such a huge model to chip!
@@NightShiftScaleModels The Problem is...it's an 1/72 scale, but still a huge tank :0
Well that's not huge anymore. But still a large surface to chip. When I was chipping my 1/72 O-I superheavy tank, man, that took like a month to paint all the chips.

It makes me feel so incompetent at painting lol
Lol, well then I think some of those tips can help you improve! And thank you!
@@NightShiftScaleModels I bet so, it's so very well explained, makes it looks easy! (focus on look, lol)
@@brainyskeletonofdoom7824 It gets easier with more practice!
Oh, great, I was just feeling okay about my miniatures and now all I see is an equivalence to fingerpainting. Thanks.
Seriously though, they are great techniques that I will attempt to use on my tanks.
Smilomaniac lol I feel your pain buddy ✌️
Lol guys, I think those techniques can help you in a non-painful way. This whole video was DESIGNED to make it as easy as it can get :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels - I'm joking. I'm not a hobby model painter, I do Warhammer 40k, so I'm in the process of getting through a rough total of 120 models, of which 9 are tanks or tank sized models.
I've only painted around 70 or so guys (ever), so obviously the quality and realism is not going to anywhere near what you've done, hence the finterpainting joke :D
I did know about the sponge trick, but you gave me a better idea of how spartan I should be with it.
By the way, I'd give my left nut to see you paint a 40k Tank or Dreadnought with your skill and knowledge. That's easily Golden Demon territory.
@@Smilomaniac You're actually not the first guy to ask for that. I think it will be worth a try in the future. Seems like there's plenty of 40K crowd amongst my subscribers.
@@NightShiftScaleModels There's a big wave of new people coming into the hobby, since they re-launched it with an easier system and they just released (like a week ago) their new contrast paints, which are a wash/acrylic mix that covers a surface in one one go and leaves the recesses darker in the same color.
It sounds better than it is, but some of the paints are surprisingly good. Obviously the paints work best on organic models, not so much flat panels.
The reason your chipping video blew up in views is probably from that new interest.
Other channels like Miniac, Goobertown Hobbies and Ebay Miniature Rescues (and many others) have also blown up in subs. So if you happen to include 40k in the title of one of your videos, your sub count will likely also skyrocket.
I know you'll only do it if you have a genuine interest, you don't seem like the kind to hunt for subscriber numbers, but it's a nice incentive all the same.
By far the best modeling channel ive seen yet! Keep up the good work!
Excellent tutorial. Good tips, good humor and wonderful examples.
97% People who actually use the information

This is an excellent tutorial. It's still problematic for the relative beginner like me to translate the lessons to the model - but overall it explains the method as best as it can possibly be shown. I have been making model armor since the 1970's and I'm still just beginning to learn the techniques.
I'm applying these techniches on my model and i must to say it's getting better ! I'm liking ver much! It Works!! Thank you!!!
Awesome video Martin. Very informative, funny and compulsive viewing. I've been using the sponge technique but you've given me many more ideas.
As a mostly ship modeller deck tan is a must so you've just gone to demi-god status. Such a useful and versatile colour, never to be underestimated.
