LARGEST Plant Market In Southeast Asia | A Mecca For Plant Lovers | CHATUCHAK Tour - Part 1

  • This is part 1 of a two part episode covering the entire Chatuchakl Plant market in Bangkok (filmed in April 2022). Every genus is represented in this comprehensive tour of the most important plant market in Thailand (and probably the most vibrant and complete in the world). I go from booth to booth, covering anything that is of interest and sharing everything I know. Unfortunately the wireless microphone was interrupted by something so we experienced very choppy audio. I did a voiceover for the first half of the video but it took hours and days… so I gave up. But there’s tons to discover and enjoy in this episode!
    What we ran into:
    cactii succulent
    orchid
    bromeliad
    hoyas
    dischidia
    aglaonema
    dieffenbachia
    dracaena
    begonia
    calathea
    pot
    fern
    caladium
    colocasia
    caudex
    stephania
    tissue culture
    adenium
    plumeria
    sansevieria
    tillandsia

    Sean, you are my absolute favorite plant-related CZcamsr! Thanks for bringing us so much high-quality, interesting and educational content. My plants are doing so much better after I started watching your channel and following your tips.
    The other day I watched your Tillandsia and Dischidia cafe tour videos, as well as an older one where you toured the Anthurium nursery and gave us an introduction to hybridizing them. Now we get a fabulous tour of the Bangkok plant market. This is stuff many of us can only dream about doing in real life, so thank you for making these videos and sharing your expertise. It is appreciated!

    Fun fact-At 10:12 you see those teal-blue, smooth-skinned round cacti? They’re a _Lophophora_ species.. AKA, ‘Peyote’, which is only legal for native Americans to use, as it’s an ancient tradition in the American southwest and northern Mexico. _Lophophora_ contains a high amount of mescaline. It’s not a party drug though. It’s a mental, spiritual, learning “tool” of a psychedelic. And it’s just for sale in Bangkok! In wishing weren’t so illegal here in the US, honestly I think the cactus looks cool and makes great flowers too.
    The same drug, mescaline, is contained in the Peruvian/Bolivian San Pedro cactus, which I believe is _Trichocereus pachanoi_ or _T. peruvianus_ but the genera may have been recently changed… the difference is with the size. If you see how small the peyote is, don’t let it fool you. One bite allegedly could have you talking to animals! 🤣 Apparently it’s a spiritual awakening, just don’t overdo it or it’s scary. I’ve read it lasts for 12 hours. Meanwhile, I’ve taken San Pedro cactus dozens of times, literally. Those are tall, columnar cacti that are many times larger than peyote. But contain even less mescaline within. So they’re actually a lot more tame and mild to ingest. I’ve never hallucinated or heard things, seen things, or felt in any way inebriated on it, but I’ve never done peyote…

    Heyyyy I moved to Thailand earlier this year and I'd love to hang out with you next time you come around! The "monstera pinnapartita?" is a monstera Siam (the name comes from the old name of Thailand, as it's supposedly endemic here). I've discovered it here and bought one of the size you showed for 300thb (roughly 7 euros / 8 dollars), before seeing that a baby sells for around 80 usd in the US at places like planterina!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 2 lety

      Omg thats so affordable. But it might not have been a monstera then? Because they are new world aroids, found only in the americas. Or perhaps this was a hybrid made in Thailand?

    • @Astrid-oq3kk
      @Astrid-oq3kk Před 2 lety

      @@onlyplants I know! That's why I couldn't not buy it 😂😂 I've done more research on it since yesterday night, and apparently it could be a cultivar of pinnapartita, and it's also called "Spiderman" sometimes. And you're right, a couple of places online think they come from South America... So I guess my Thai sources were just extrapolating from the name 🤔😂

    • @lucastham9328
      @lucastham9328 Před 2 lety

      pinnartipartita seems like one of the toughest monstera to grow to maturity, but when it does its spectacular

    • @Astrid-oq3kk
      @Astrid-oq3kk Před 2 lety

      @@lucastham9328 the Siam is not difficult (in my current climate at least), however it:
      - doesn't like having too much room. I had repotted it in a slightly bigger pot for esthetic purposes, and it stopped growing for a couple of months. When I moved it back into a smaller pot it tried to push out one leaf every other week, which led to my next issue.
      - the new leaves tend to get stuck when trying to separate from the previous stem and can rot off in high humidity climates, so you need to help them out a bit. I've lost two leaves by not acting fast enough.
      My growing conditions: it's in a south facing room, 3 meters or so away from the window (which has an UV filter on it), kept at around 30 - 36°C (and at 26°C for about one hour per day, when we turn on the AC).
      The plant is in soil (aroid mix), and gets fertilized every other week with some NPK 21 21 21 at very low concentrations.
      There's no growing lights and I don't monitor my humidity levels, but Google tells me the region usually sits between 70 and 90%.
      Hopefully this helps you out in some way!

      Theres not really a way to bring in plants legally… for you to receive plants here you must have a PT or CV and be registered with Kementan. The process is nearly impossible and only a few handful of companies here have successfully done it. Most people bring in plants secretly in their luggage, or by help of pirates 🙏🏽 but with marijuana being common in Thailand now I dont recommend bringing in the luggage as screening at airport has increased in scrutiny.

      Hello, depending on countries… some are quite strict. In USA they have sniffing dogs at the airport that can detect live produce (and nartotics and explosives). If you can get away with it I say go for it but know your countries rules and also understand the risk/penalties should you get caught.

    Is it possible to do a video of the process of exporting these out of the country, is a permit required?

      Ive done an episode but that is for Indonesia export. From Thailand the process is more smooth I heard…

      The only way we can bring plant in legally is to have an import permit, which requires you to have a business license.
