Joseph Glidden, the inventor of the most common barbed wire, was from DeKalb, Illinois. The DeKalb High School team is called the Barbs. Joseph Glidden’s third cousin, Francis Harrington Glidden, was a founder of Glidden Paints.
The big ranchers loved the stuff too. They could fence off grass and water. Texas had to pass a fence cutting law that included making sure roads were left open and gates every 1/4 mile for needed access.

I'd argue that it was the invention of the windmill. The windmill made it possible to farm land that previously, couldn't be farmed due to lack of irrigation.
This opened up the entire Midwest for cultivation. If it weren't for the windmill, farmers and ranchers wouldn't need barbed wire, because there would be no point in sectioning off land that wasn't usable.

My grandfather was a cattlemen. Uvaldo Lobato, he ran cows in northern New Mexico as our ancestors had done for nearly 300 years since arriving here to stake our claim to northern Mexico. Seems to me that cowboys were still needed in the 30s and 40s though the old west had long since been tamed.
